Orioles reinstate C Adley Rutschman and LHP Keegan Akin, but Félix Bautista won't return soon
The return of Akin coincided with the news that closer Félix Bautista will endure an extended stay on the 15-day IL with a right shoulder injury that has kept him sidelined since July 24.
'An MRI (determined) there was a lot of swelling in the shoulder,' interim manger Tony Mansolino said. 'We can't quite make a determination yet, or diagnose it until the swelling goes down. That's going to be probably more weeks than days.'
Bautista underwent Tommy John surgery in October of 2023 before returning this season to reclaim his role as the team's closer. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 2.60 ERA and 17 saves for the last-place club.
'It's incredibly disappointing,' Mansolino said of Bautista's latest injury. 'He's an important part of the Baltimore Orioles. A very unfortunate set of circumstances.'
The return of Rutschman should improve the team's offense and lift the mood in the clubhouse. Rutschman — the top overall pick in the 2019 draft — was batting .227 with eight homers and 20 RBIs before going on the IL on June 20 with a left oblique strain.
'It's a big piece. He walked into the room and brought a lot of energy, right away,' Mansolino said. 'Lot of smiles, lot of hugs.'
Akin missed 21 games with left shoulder inflammation. He's 3-0 with a 3.32 ERA.
Baltimore cleared roster space for Rutschman and Akin by optioning pitcher Yaramil Hiraldo to Triple-A Norfolk and designating catcher Jacob Stallings for assignment.

Mike Yastrzemski homers in his first at bat with Royals after they acquired him at trade deadline
TORONTO (AP) — Mike Yastrzemski made quite the early impression on his new teammates by homering in his first plate appearance with the Kansas City Royals on Friday, a day after they acquired him from the San Francisco Giants. Yastrzemski hit a 370-foot blast over the wall in right-center field while facing Kevin Gausman in the second inning of the Royals' game against the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays. His two-run shot gave the Royals a 2-1 lead. The Royals gave up minor league pitcher Yunior Marte in the trade that brought Yastrzemski to Kansas City. Yastrzemski, who is eligible for free agency at the end of the season, was batting .231 with a .330 on-base percentage, .355 slugging percentage, eight homers, 28 RBIs and six steals in 96 games with the Giants. The 34-year-old Yastrzemski had spent his entire major league career with San Francisco. The Giants acquired him from the Baltimore Orioles in March 2019, and he made his major league debut later that year. ___

Rays place All-Star first baseman Jonathan Aranda on injured list with a fractured left wrist
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays placed All-Star first baseman Jonathan Aranda on the 10-day injured list Friday with a fractured left wrist. Aranda was injured Thursday in a collision with New York Yankees designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton. Aranda said the injury did not feel 'catastrophic' and he's hopeful he'll return this season, although the Rays cautioned he won't be able to use the wrist for approximately three weeks. Aranda's wrist has been immobilized in an air cast and he's scheduled to undergo more imaging at the three-week mark. At that point, the Rays will reassess his return timetable. 'Let's see how the bone heals," manager Kevin Cash said before Friday night's series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers. "I think he has re-imaging in about three weeks, but we will continue to remain optimistic.' Stanton hit a soft grounder in the fifth inning to third baseman Junior Caminero, who charged in on wet grass to field the ball. Aranda reached for Caminero's wide toss that sailed into the runner, and his left wrist appeared to hit Stanton's left shoulder. Aranda, a first-time All-Star, is batting .316 with 12 home runs, 54 RBIs in 103 games this season. He has a .394 on-base percentage, and an .872 OPS, making him one of the majors' most dangerous hitters. The Rays reinstated Ha-Seong Kim from the IL and recalled Tristan Gray from Triple-A Durham.
