Govt neglecting public welfare: opposition leader
"The responsibility of a provincial government is to combat inflation, lower electricity bills, and improve public health and education facilities - not to launch vanity transport projects," he said while addressing a press conference. "People of Punjab need relief, not a bullet train or an airline."
Bhachar questioned the government's fiscal transparency, asking why only 50% of the Annual Development Fund had been utilised. He claimed full budgetary allocations were used only at the Punjab Chief Minister's Secretariat and the Governor's House.
The opposition leader criticised spending by the Punjab Communications and Works Department, alleging billions of rupees had been spent on constructing a rest house at Rawal Dam, which he called an "unnecessary scheme."
"It appears as though the current leadership believes it will remain in power indefinitely," he said.
The opposition leader accused the federal government of adopting a "soft approach" regarding rising tensions with India.

‘Punjab to review PFC Award after new LG Act's implementation'
LAHORE: Punjab Finance Minister Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman on Tuesday said that a new Local Government Act is being introduced, and once implemented, the Provincial Finance Commission (PFC) Award will be reviewed. While responding to Amjad Ali Javed in Punjab Assembly Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman said that PML-N has always stood in favour of Local Government rights. Earlier, Amjad Ali Javed complained that his committee cannot even pay electricity bills. Criticizing the corrupt state of banks, he said employees are not receiving their salaries. He questioned the Finance Minister, asking how much longer it will take to receive the Provincial Finance Commission Award (PFC) Award after eight years of waiting. 'Can the Finance Minister provide a clear timeframe?' he asked. PML (N) MPA Ahmed Ahsan Iqbal while speaking on the floor of the House said that Secretary of Local Government is saying that the current situation id extremely dire. Hr also said that the Local Government has no funds left. He emphasized that the responsibilities assigned by the federation to the provinces should similarly be delegated by the provinces to municipal committees, but institutions are not receiving their due rights. He raised the question of which establishment is obstructing the implementation of third-tier governance. The session started 1 hour 46 minutes late under the chair of the Acting Speaker Malik Malik Zaheer Iqbal Channar. During a session of the Punjab Assembly, government member Mumtaz Ali Chang delivered a fiery speech, demanding that the Crime Control Department (CCD) conduct operations in the Kacha area. He highlighted a recent incident in Nawazabad where a man named Hamza was killed, two others were injured, and one went missing due to dacoit firing. Chang stated, 'First, clean your own house. The CCD should also establish a unit in the Kacha area.' He further demanded the formation of a committee to investigate the killings of innocent people and the registration of false cases against them. Asserting that 'justice will restore the Assembly's dignity,' Chang defended his role as a public servant, stating that he actively participates in welfare work. He praised the Chief Minister of Punjab for establishing the CCD, which has reduced fear in areas previously considered inaccessible. He also commended the peace festival organized by the Punjab Governor in the Kacha area on the 11th of this month. Chang questioned why the CCD and Anti-Corruption Department were not conducting operations in the Katcha area despite having the authority. He alleged that police officials owning land in the region were sabotaging operations. 'If the Prime Minister and Chief Minister can go to jail, why can't the dacoits of Kacha?' he asked. He further claimed that reports indicate some notorious police officers are supporting dacoits in the area. Acting Speaker Zaheer Iqbal Channar sought a report on police officials occupying land in the Katcha area, directing that it be presented in the Assembly to identify those involved. He emphasized, 'Identify the dacoits occupying the Katcha area. Separately, Mumtaz Chang raised concerns about the loans and facilities being offered by Punjab Bank Rahim Yar Khan, stating, 'If we don't know what loans this bank is giving, how will the public know?' He urged the government to inform citizens through advertisements. Government member Ahmed Ahsan Iqbal criticized the Bank of Punjab during the session, stating that its reports are not being presented to the Public Accounts Committee. He said, 'The Bank of Punjab always resists in this matter,' adding that the Assembly has the right to know what privileges are being given to the bank's CEO. Meanwhile, the 26 suspended opposition members of the Punjab Assembly have been reinstated. This decision came as a result of successful negotiations between the government and the opposition following their suspension during the budget speech of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Provincial Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Mian Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman submitted a request in the assembly for the restoration of the opposition members, upon which Acting Speaker Punjab Assembly Zahr Iqbal Channar immediately ordered their reinstatement. The assembly secretariat also issued a notification confirming the restoration. According to details, on June 27, opposition members created a ruckus during the speech of Punjab Minister Maryam Nawaz, leading to verbal clashes and physical altercations. Following the incident, the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly suspended 26 opposition members for 15 sittings. Later, government members submitted four applications to the Speaker, requesting the Election Commission to issue disqualification notices against the opposition members. Govt hails ATC verdict in May 9 cases
Hailing it as a "positive step", the federal government on Tuesday welcomed a trial court's decision to convict a number of PTI leaders including Punjab Assembly Leader of Opposition Malik Ahmed Khan Bhachar in the May 9 rioting cases. "Today, the Sargodha ATC issued an order and we welcome it ... I think it is a very positive step as justice has been upheld," Minister of State for Law and Justice Barrister Aqeel Malik said on Monday while addressing a press conference in Islamabad. He said the verdict "fulfils all requirements of justice" and followed due process since the entire trial proceedings were carried out legally. "The decision announced is in accordance with the law and the Constitution," Malik said. "When you take the law into your own hand, whether you're an MNA or MPA or opposition leader ... the [status] doesn't matter, as the law is equal for everyone and will come into force." Responding to the verdict, Bhachar wrote on X that he will not leave "the leader of Umat-e-Muslima and son of Mianwali the Prime Minister Imran Khan" no matter what. Other PTI leaders also condemned the verdicts as a mockery of justice. Deputy leader of opposition in the Punjab Assembly, Muhammad Moeen Ud Din Riaz Qureshi, termed the ATC verdicts a "black day for democracy" He said lawmakers including Bhachar of the largest province were unlawfully sentenced relying upon fabricated evidence and witnesses. "Every child in Pakistan knows well about the fate of these cases. Public is fully aware about the court's conduct. The PTI will challenge the decision of the ATC in appellate court. Bhachar was the opposition leader and he will remain the opposition leader," he said. PTI's chief whip in the Punjab Assembly, Rana Shahbaz Ahmad, said such verdicts won't force them to bow, as they stood for a cause and the nation's future. "If such decisions persist, there is no doubt 80% of PTI lawmakers will be sentenced — despite having no link to the FIR offences," he said. He demanded that the government constitute a committee for reviewing the forged cases registered across Punjab against PTI leaders, workers and supporters. Another lawmaker Waqas Maan criticized the ATC's verdict, calling it nothing short of a "funeral of justice." He warned the government against sidelining the opposition, reminding it that it might face a similar situation in future.

They further stated that no substantial evidence was available to link their clients to the offences outlined in the FIR. They argued that the defendants incited public unrest, leading to violent incidents across the country. The FIR included charges under anti-terrorism laws related to vandalism, arson, and inciting riots during protests that followed Imran Khan's arrest. According to court proceedings, the accused were found guilty of damaging public property, setting buildings on fire, and causing unrest. The ATC handed down the sentence after a thorough examination of the evidence, witness statements, and police reports. 'Black day of democracy' PTI's Deputy Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly, Moeen Riaz Qureshi, termed the sentences handed down by the ATC court as the 'black day of democracy,' stating that lawmakers, including the opposition leader of the largest province, were unlawfully sentenced based on fabricated evidence and witnesses. PTI's Chief Whip in the Punjab Assembly, Rana Shahbaz Ahmad, stated that such decisions would not force them to bow down, as they stand firm for a cause and the future of the nation. May 9 Riots The May 9 riots erupted nationwide following the arrest of former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan, after which PTI leaders and workers staged protests targeting both civil and military installations, including Jinnah House and the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. The military condemned the events as a "Black Day" and decided to try the protesters under the Army Act. As a result of the unrest, many PTI members were arrested and tried in military courts. In December, a military court convicted 25 individuals, including Imran Khan's nephew, Hassan Khan Niazi, and later sentenced 60 more. In January, 19 convicts had their sentences pardoned following successful mercy appeals, although PTI expressed dissatisfaction over the limited number of pardons. The military trials had initially been halted following a Supreme Court ruling but were resumed following the court's instructions to finalize pending cases and announce judgments for those involved in the violent incidents.
