Tailor strategy to demographic, geographic realities, Johari tells Umno
He said the party's current approach needs to move beyond uniform outreach and be tailored to the demographic and geographic realities of each constituency, especially in urban areas such as Kuala Lumpur and Johor Baru.
"You can't apply the same strategy across the board anymore. Urban areas require a different kind of engagement than rural ones," Johari said at a press conference today after officiating the Pasir Gudang Umno division delegates' conference.
Also present was fellow Umno vice-president and Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who heads the Pasir Gudang division.
Johari, who is also the Plantation and Commodities Minister and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, said 40 per cent of Malaysian voters are now youth. He added that most young voters are educated, analytical, and integrity-driven in how they assess political candidates.
"They evaluate candidates differently than those who once voted for the founding fathers or for big infrastructure," he said.
"Campaigns now must match the mindset of the constituency, not just rely on legacy methods."
Johari said the party has increased cooperation with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as part of a broader strategy to connect with younger voters, a demographic previously under-engaged.
"Now you see Umno programmes involving more NGOs. This didn't happen before," he said.
"Many of our activities today are youth-focused, but it's not just about organising events. It has to fit the context of each area."
He said urban centres demand digital-savvy, grassroots-driven outreach, whereas rural constituencies may still favour personal touch and service delivery.
Johari also said there is a need to understand rival parties' strengths when formulating Umno's tactical approach.
"Success lies not just in how dynamic Umno becomes, but also in how well we assess the strengths of those contesting against us," he said.
He called for fresh political thinking as the party prepares for the next general election, warning that outdated models could cost Umno the support it needs to regain ground.
"We must think differently if we want to win back the hearts of voters, especially the young," he added.

Acting Defence Minister General Natthapon Nakpanich welcomed the consensus on holding the extraordinary GBC meeting in Malaysia from August 4 to 7, expressing appreciation for the collaborative effort. "It is my pleasure to confirm that Thailand accepts the proposal to include representatives from Malaysia, as the ASEAN Chair, US and China, who have been providing assistance since July 28, as observers to the GBC meeting,' he said in a statement. He added that the participation of observers from Malaysia, the United States, and China is scheduled to take place on August 7. Natthapon also expressed his sincere appreciation to all parties involved in making the preparations possible, particularly to the Malaysian side for its excellent coordination in arranging this important meeting. Last Thursday, Thailand's Defence Ministry proposed that the upcoming GBC meeting be held on neutral ground, suggesting Malaysia as the venue, and recommended that it run from Aug 4 to 7 to allow sufficient time for comprehensive discussions. Conflict at the Thai-Cambodian border began with a brief skirmish on May 28 and escalated into armed clashes on July 24. On Monday, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire following a special meeting hosted in Putrajaya by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the current Asean Chair. - Bernama

BN aims to contest 1 state seat in every Sabah parliamentary constituency
BN deputy chairman Mohamad Hasan said representation across Sabah will lift the spirits of party members and make them feel included in the process. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Barisan Nasional wants to contest at least one state seat in every parliamentary constituency in Sabah in the coming state election, says its deputy chairman, Mohamad Hasan. Mohamad, who is also the Umno deputy president, said this is a key demand from the Sabah Umno-BN leadership, aimed at ensuring the party has representation and relevance across the state, Berita Harian reported. 'In the last state election, there were several parliamentary areas that had no BN candidates at all. This dampened the morale of the Umno-BN members and machinery as they had no role to play during the election. 'When people are not given the opportunity, some become disheartened and eventually leave the party, and that's not good,' he said. He was speaking to reporters after officiating the joint Umno divisional delegates' meeting, including its Wanita, Youth and Puteri wings, in Membakut today. Mohamad said BN should be allocated at least one seat to contest in constituencies with two or three state seats. 'This would lift the spirits of our party members and make them feel included in the process,' he said. Mohamad said the proposal would be discussed at the top level through Umno's negotiation committee and among the secretaries-general of the BN component parties. 'This is my message to the secretaries-general … do not disregard this request. Every parliamentary seat must have at least one BN candidate,' he said. Also present was Umno Supreme Council member and Kimanis MP Mohamad Alamin.
