‘Tiger man' Valmik Thapar took train to Ranthambore in his 20s on a whim. It changed his life
His fight to protect India's big cats continued till the end. Thapar breathed his last at the age of 73 early Saturday. He passed away at his house on Kautilya Marg in Delhi after a battle with cancer.
New Delhi: From tying a buffalo to a tree to observe the hunting behaviour of Ranthambore National Park's famous resident tigress Padmini and her cubs, to taking on his own colleague in the Tiger Task Force in the pursuit of prevention of poaching in Sariska, conservationist and author Valmik Thapar dedicated over four decades of his life to shaping India's tiger conservation programme.
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that Thapar's death was a 'great loss'.
'Today's Ranthambore, particularly, is a testimony to his deep commitment and indefatigable zeal. He was uncommonly knowledgeable on a variety of issues relating to biodiversity, and not a day passed during my Ministerial tenure without our talking to each other—with me almost always at the receiving end,' Ramesh wrote in an X post.
The former environment minister said that during his tenure as chairman of the standing committee, Thapar was a constant source of valuable suggestions and advice. 'We had arguments, but it was always an education to listen to him, full of passion and concern. He was truly an unforgettable one-of-a-kind,' he added.

Thapar's life and work
In the early 1970s, hunting tigers was a popular sport at Ranthambore.
It was around then that Thapar, who was then in his 20s battling personal crises, decided to leave everything behind. He caught a train to Ranthambore, and this whim, he said, 'changed his life'.
'I didn't know anything about tigers then. But I fell in love with the beauty of the place,' Thapar said in the opening of a BBC documentary in 2024. He said that upon his arrival at Ranthambore, with the help of the park director and another pioneer in tiger conservation, Fateh Singh Rathore, he spotted his first tiger in the park. They named her Padmini. And that is how his journey began.
Apart from being an astute conservationist, Thapar was also a celebrated filmmaker and author, who penned around 32 books, including Land of the Tigers—A Natural History of the Indian Subcontinent, Living with Tigers and The Secret Life of Tigers. He also served in over 150 committees for tiger conservation at both the Centre and state levels.
In 2005, Thapar was appointed as a member of the Tiger Task Force to look into the poaching of tigers at the Sariska Tiger Reserve. After the committee, led by environmentalist Sunita Narain, presented its report, Thapar wrote a dissent note, claiming that the task force was misrepresenting the ground realities. He asserted that tiger reserves needed dedicated zones, where human interference would not be allowed.
While he was known mainly for his work around tiger conservation, he also extensively worked on wildlife conservation at large. He was very vocally critical of the Narendra Modi government's Project Cheetah, stressing that India's weather, prey-base and terrain were not cheetah-friendly.
According to conservation biologist Neha Singh, Thapar was a 'fearless advocate for the tigers'. 'He was the international voice of Indian tigers for many many years,' she said.

Political storm in Himachal over assault on NHAI officials
Attack on National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) officials in Himachal by the panchayati raj minister Anirudh Rana on Tuesday has brewed a political storm in the state with the Opposition leaders targeting the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu led Congress government. Reacting strongly over the assault, Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday condemned the 'heinous assault'. (File) Himachal Pradesh panchayati raj minister Anirudh Singh Rana on Tuesday had assaulted a NHAI official, Achal Jindal, during a site inspection where a five-storeyed residential building had collapsed. When another official, engineer Yogesh, tried to intervene, he too was beaten up. The NHAI officer is undergoing treatment at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) in Shimla. Reacting strongly over the assault, Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday termed the action 'heinous'. Calling the incident 'deeply reprehensible', Gadkari wrote on X: 'The heinous assault on Achal Jindal, manager, NHAI PIU Shimla, allegedly by the minister of panchayati raj, Himachal Pradesh, and his associates, is deeply reprehensible and an affront to the rule of law. Such a brutal attack on a public servant performing his official duties not only endangers individual safety but also erodes institutional integrity.' 'I have taken serious cognizance of the matter and spoken with the chief minister, urging immediate and exemplary action against all perpetrators. Accountability must prevail, and justice must be delivered without delay,' Gadkari wrote. NHAI is presently executing 17 National Highway projects worth ₹ 23,729 crore in Himachal. Anurag, Jai Ram lashes out at Congress Lashing out at the government, Himachal leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur on Monday said,'The government, the police administration, all kept suppressing this matter. When no excuse worked, leniency was shown in filing the case as well,' said Thakur, while adding that 'When BJP leaders staged a democratic protest, a case of attempt to murder was filed against them but on the other hand those who beat up public servants, hit pots on their heads, they are booked under milder sections.' He further said, 'The chief minister should take action against the minister and Anirudh should be dropped from cabinet immediately. The state will not tolerate such dictatorship.' Senior BJP leader and Hamirpur Member of Parliament Anurag Thakur also targeted the state government. 'The chief minister must act decisively if he wants to save his government's image and ensure central schemes are implemented. Otherwise, what message are we sending? That officials will be beaten for doing their duty?' said Anurag. 'The CBI probe in the Vimal Negi case is still ongoing, and now another officer's head has been fractured. Are government officers in Himachal even safe anymore? Will they be driven to suicide? These are serious questions, and the CM must answer them,' said Anurag while talking to the media in Shimla. 'What could be more unfortunate than a minister being named in an FIR and an official complaint for assaulting an officer in a closed room and injuring him?' the MP added. 'Thousands of crores of rupees are being provided by the Central Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi for four-lane highways, NDRF operations, and railway projects in Himachal. But while funds are being sent, officers on the ground are being assaulted in closed rooms by state ministers and their aides,' Anurag further added. NHAI chairman writes to Himachal chief secy Meanwhile condemning the attack, NHAI chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav has written a strongly worded letter to the chief secretary Prabobh Saxena seeking 'detailed enquiry into the incident and appropriate legal action against those responsible'. Yadav said that the such incidents demoralise field engineers and could delay the execution of infrastructure projects. 'The officers of NHAI have sustained grave injuries and were later hospitalised... In view of the above-mentioned incident, I request you to kindly conduct a detailed enquiry into the matter and all people responsible for the manhandling of NHAI officers be tried as per law...' the letter further read. 'Such an event not only raises questions on the deficiencies in the law-and-order system of the state, but also hampers the morale of the officers of NHAI working at field level,' the letter mentions. In solidarity with Jindal, the NHAI Engineers Association asked all officers of the highway authority to proceed on half-day leave from 2pm on Tuesday as a mark of protest. Matter has been brought to CM's notice 'I don't have full details about the incident, but Union minister Nitin Gadkari has raised the issue with me. The matter has been brought to the notice of the chief minister, and whatever action is appropriate will be taken,' said PWD minister Vikramaditya Singh on Tuesday.

Cong revokes Mulak's suspension amid rejig before local body polls
1 2 Nagpur: The Congress formally revoked suspension of senior Vidarbha leader and former Maharashtra minister Rajendra Mulak on Monday, less than a year after disciplinary action was initiated against him for contesting the 2024 assembly elections as an independent. Party insiders said the move reflects a broader strategy to consolidate support ahead of impending local body polls. Mulak's return also signals a subtle recalibration of internal equations within the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance, following pressure from local party units and MVA allies. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Maharashtra in-charge Ramesh Chennithala were present when Mulak's reinstatement was announced in Delhi. MPCC president Harshwardhan Sapkal officially welcomed Mulak back, stating, "We formally revoke the suspension of Mulak and welcome him back into the Congress family." Along with Mulak, Yajnavalkya Jichkar — son of former minister Shrikant Jichkar — was expelled last year for contesting independently from Katol, a seat allocated to NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Anil Deshmukh's son Salil under the MVA seat-sharing pact. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo His suspension was revoked in April. Even the NCP(Ajit) faction on Tuesday revoked suspension of former corporator Abha Pande, who had contested as a rebel from East Nagpur after being denied party ticket. Mulak, son of late minister Bhausaheb Mulak, was among 28 rebel leaders suspended in November 2024 for defying alliance consensus and filing his nomination from Ramtek against the official MVA candidate, Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Vishal Barbate. Despite the action, Mulak actively campaigned for Congress nominees in Saoner, Kamptee, and Umred alongside former minister Sunil Kedar. Speaking to TOI from Delhi, Mulak said, "Even though I was a rebel, I worked for the party's victory during the assembly polls. In Umred, which was entrusted to me before expulsion, I ensured a thumping win for our candidate Sanjay Meshram. I even showed Kharge the ECI result sheet—despite being independent, I polled 85,000 votes, while the official MVA nominee managed just 5,000. He was surprised." He added that senior leader Rahul Gandhi, in a meeting with state leaders on Monday evening, directed the revocation of all similar suspensions to strengthen the party ahead of the elections. Also present at the reinstatement were AICC secretaries BM Sandeep and Kunal Choudhary. Mulak is expected to resume his organisational responsibilities in the coming days. Congress alleges massive scam in SAIL subsidised steel sales
New Delhi, July 1 (UNI) The Congress party today accused the Modi government of being involved in a massive scam worth hundreds of crores of rupees, linked to the sale of subsidised steel by the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). According to the party, around 100 companies were provided steel at subsidised rates for infrastructure projects, but instead of using it for the intended purpose, they allegedly resold it at higher prices, making huge profits. Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters here, senior party leader Ajoy Kumar claimed that an officer Rajiv Bhatia, who flagged the scam, was instead victimised and forced to take voluntary retirement. He alleged that 100 companies were provided eleven lakh tons of steel at subsidised price by the SAIL for infrastructure project. Instead of using the steel themselves, they straightway sold it further thus making huge profits. He said, when an honest officer Rajiv Bhatia exposed the scandal, he was suspended for 10 months without any valid reason. Later, he was deliberately accused of poor performance and involvement in corruption. Kumar further said that, on the other hand, over two dozen officials who had been suspended during the investigation of the scam were reinstated under the pretext of the Lok Sabha elections. He claimed that one of the companies, Venkatesh Infra Projects Limited, was registered just ten days before the allotment of contract worth Rs 750 crore. The company directly sold the steel received under the contract, making a profit of about Rs 80 to 90 crore. While the company made the profits, the transportation charges were paid by the SAIL. Wondering what were enforcement agencies like ED doing, Ajoy pointed out that it had initiated investigations against 25 Opposition leaders, 23 of whom joined the BJP, after which cases against them were either closed or shelved. He cited the examples of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Praful Patel, Ashok Chavan in this context. UNI RBE RN
