Researchers find promising results in implant trial which treats spinal cord injuries with red light

Scientists say they are already seeing 'tantalising' early results in an innovative trial of an implant which emits red light to treat spinal cord injuries.
A research team from UWA and the Perron Institute was recently awarded a $1 million grant to do preclinical trials into red and near-infrared light therapy (photobiomodulation) for spinal cord injuries using implanted devices.
There is currently no cure for spinal cord injury, which affects more than 20,000 Australians, often in a devastating, life-changing and lifelong way.
Lead investigator Stuart Hodgetts said the wireless red light devices could eventually be implanted into a person's spine after a spinal cord injury to limit damage and improve function.
'What we're trying to do with the red light is to reduce the harmful secondary changes that follow the injury, and those are really responsible for a lot of the deficits that you see,' he said.
'The initial trauma is one thing, but then how badly the secondary responses are activated is really key to how much more damage that individual is going to receive.
'If you can get in at a particular intervention point and reduce that, you're actually protecting what tissue you have left at that particular time.'
Red light therapy has been around for decades, and mounting research is now showing how it can help with a wide range of health issues, including neurodegenerative disorders, gut problems and muscle and ligament damage.
Red light is known to reduce inflammation and speed up healing, with the benefit of having no adverse risks or side-effects.
Dr Hodgetts, who heads the Spinal Cord Repair Laboratory at the Perron Institute and UWA, said only about 10 per cent of red light applied non-invasively to the spine — using devices located outside of the skin — reaches the spinal cord.
So the team has developed an implant that can be placed inside the body directly above a spinal cord injury (SCI) so that the tissue can receive a more controlled dose of red light.
The implant, around the size of a little fingernail, with a red LED on it is currently being tested on animal models of SCI in the laboratory. Dr Hodgetts said it was known that exercise improved outcomes with regenerative therapies.
'The big plus for this project was that the animals could have the red light on and exercise at the same time. These two things would be additive and we would see, hopefully, beneficial outcomes,' he said.
Co-investigator, UWA Emeritus Professor Alan Harvey, said he envisioned the implant, which is left in the body once inserted, being powered by an induction coil in a person's wheelchair.
'This kind of technology almost seems like magic, and there's a grassroots sense that it should work,' he said.
'Eventually, for this to become established — as what could be an effective and simple way of treating a whole bunch of different things — you've got to understand exactly how red light therapy works.'
Professor Harvey, who is also a Perron Institute Honorary Senior Research Fellow, said it was most likely going to work best on people who have recently suffered a spinal cord injury because of the red light's ability to minimise secondary problems, such as inflammation, that happen in the days and weeks after the trauma.
'What is not clear is, if someone who was injured 10 years ago, if they were given one of these, and no one's ever really done anything like this, would it still be of benefit? Who knows that? That's a whole different ball game,' he said.
The research will look into the how red light implants affect both acute and chronic spinal cord injury. A third co-investigator, UWA physicist Professor Vince Wallace, is providing guidance on the construction and maintenance of the new implant devices.
PhD student Isabella Drew, who has just submitted a review on photobiomodulation, said red light helps to stimulate the body's natural healing responses.
'At appropriate settings it is able to stabilise injured tissue and help protect damaged nerve cells,' she said. 'Unfortunately, there are many complex and interactive components to light therapy and as yet there is no consensus about the optimal mode of treatment.'
The $1m grant from the National Health and Medical Research Council is funding three years of preclinical trials of the implant. Soon a PhD student will join the research team to help develop an implant design for humans.
The research was welcomed by Tayla Stone, a 31-year-old woman who has been dealing with a spinal cord injury since she was 16 years old.
'Just to know that they're still trying to find a way to help people sustaining these sorts of injuries is a good thing because obviously I don't want other people to go through what I've been through,' the mother-of-two from Mandurah said. 'Hopefully it can help another 16-year-old who may break their back.'
Ms Stone, who was paralysed after a dirt bike crash, recalled how immediately after her accident, surgery was delayed for a few days because there was so much swelling around the injury. Metal rods were then inserted to support her injured spine, and she wore a back brace for weeks after her accident.
But Ms Stone said other than that, treatment was more about adapting her to a new life in a wheelchair than trying to heal her spinal injury.
'I was given a percentage for recovery — what that would look like for my body to go back to normal — of 5 per cent,' she said.
Ms Stone said the physiotherapy she was given was not about trying to regain any use of her legs but adapt her body to them not working.
'It was very, very disappointing,' she said. 'Because I was so young at the time, if anything, it would have been probably better for me to go harder because my body was still growing.'
In the 15 years since her accident, Ms Stone has tried various complementary and alternative therapies. She said she regained some sensation in her feet with Emmett therapy — a technique that involves
a
pplying light finger pressure to specific points on the body —while acupuncture relieved her nerve pain.
Ms Stone said it was important that the implants be tested on older spinal cord injuries as well as recent ones.
'When you do hear these things, it's like, 'That would be cool if something could make it better', but we don't put all our eggs in that basket,' she said. 'The majority of us, we understand that it might not work, it might not do anything, but then it may.'

Private health insurer Bupa has been fined $35m after conceding it engaged in misleading or deceptive conduct to talk more than 4000 Australians out of claiming hospital treatments. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said in a statement on Monday that Bupa admitted to the breaches after telling customers they were not entitled to private health insurance benefits for their claims, even though they were entitled to make a claim. This left some customers thousands of dollars out of pocket for medical treatments they had to pay for when Bupa should have paid at least part of the bill. ACCC chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb said Bupa's conduct affected thousands of members over more than five years and caused harm to consumers, some of whom delayed, cancelled or went without treatment for which they were, at least partially, covered under their health insurance policies. 'Consumers purchase private health insurance to provide peace of mind, certainty of coverage and the ability to choose where and when to undertake their procedures,' Ms Cass-Gottlieb said. 'Bupa's conduct denied certain members benefits to which they were entitled to under their private health insurance policies.' Bupa APAC chief executive Nick Stone said he was deeply sorry for failing to get things right because customers were saddened by the impacts this has had on them or their families. 'Our priority has been to communicate and compensate our affected health insurance customers and providers, along with putting in place measures to help ensure this does not happen again,' Mr Stone said. Bupa has admitted over a five-year period between May 2018 and August 2023 that it misrepresented members over two separate insurance types – 'mixed cover claims' and 'uncategorised items'. A mixed cover claim includes both treatment that is covered in part by a customer's policy and another part covered by the customer itself. Bupa admits the issues occurred between May 2018 and August 2023. NewsWire/Tertius Pickard Credit: News Corp Australia According to Bupa, the private health insurer pays out more than $20m in claims a year as well as six million in-hospital and medical claims, with the mixed coverage claims representing less than 0.02 per cent of assessed customers over the five-year period. Similarly, Bupa says about 0.004 per cent of claims fall under uncategorised items, which include treatments that were not assigned to a standard clinical category in Bupa's claims assessment systems. The ACCC says Bupa's conduct occurred because Bupa staff did not have consistent and clear instructions and training for assessing mixed coverage claims, and its systems were programmed to incorrectly reject mixed coverage and uncategorised item claims. 'Private health insurance is complex, and consumers should be able to trust their health insurer to assess and pay health insurance claims accurately,' Ms Cass-Gottlieb said. 'Bupa's conduct is very serious and falls well short of what is expected of one of the largest health insurers in Australia. Bupa should have invested in the necessary systems, processes and training to prevent this from happening, and address it promptly when it occurred.' The ACCC and Bupa will jointly ask the court to order Bupa to pay a penalty of $35m among other orders. It is a matter for the court to determine whether the penalty and other orders are appropriate. Bupa started compensating affected members, medical providers and hospitals before the start of this legal action and has paid $14.3m for more than 4100 affected claims.

From July 1, Australians with a high risk of developing lung cancer can be screened for the disease free of charge. Lung cancer is the fifth most common cancer and the leading cause of cancer death in Australia. The National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP) will offer low-dose computed tomography (CT) scans to people aged 50-70 years who smoke or have a history of smoking and who don't have the symptoms or signs of lung cancer. One of the major challenges with treating lung cancer is that by the time patients present with symptoms, the disease is often at an advanced stage. Early diagnosis means greater treatment options and a higher chance they will be effective. It is estimated there were more than 15,000 new cases and nearly 9,000 deaths from lung cancer in Australia in 2024. The $260 million screening program, which is expected to save hundreds of lives a year. Mark Brooke, CEO of the Lung Foundation of Australia said the NLCSP was a transformative leap forward in ending the stigma and inequality that existed for lung cancer in Australia. 'It gives us hope that lung cancer can be diagnosed earlier offering patients more choice in treatment options and the chance to live well for longer,' he said. 'Lung Foundation Australia will continue to focus on supporting people at risk of lung cancer particularly those facing stigma and in priority populations, to ensure the gold standard of care is available to all Australians.' People wanting to access the screening will need to meet the following eligibility criteria: •Aged between 50 and 70 years. •Show no signs or symptoms suggesting you may have lung cancer. •Currently smoke or have quit smoking in the past 10 years. •Have a history of tobacco cigarette smoking of at least 30 pack-years. The patient's healthcare provider assists patients in determining whether they meet these criteria and will also assess whether the patient is suitable for screening based on specific criteria, which may be temporary, for example, being able to lie down flat to complete a CT scan. The healthcare provider is most likely to be a general practitioner (GP) or a health worker at an Aboriginal Health Service. 'Pack-year' calculations are made by multiplying the number of cigarette packs smoked per day by the number of years the person has smoked. For example, one pack-year is equal to smoking 20 cigarettes (one pack) per day for one year, or 40 cigarettes per day for six months. Once the patient has agreed to participate in the lung screen, the healthcare provider will make a referral for a low-dose CT scan. The scan requires the patient to lay on a table with their arms above their head while the machine takes images of their chest. The procedure takes about 10 to 15 minutes and does not involve any needles. For rural and remote communities that don't have access to radiology clinics, from November mobile lung cancer screening trucks using world-first technology will take mobile CT services directly to eligible patients nationally. The healthcare provider will receive scan results, and the National Cancer Screening Register (NCSR) will send patients a text message, email or letter (depending on the patient's registered communication preference) about what to do next.
