Kerala's skill development initiative gives job aspirants a STAR-rating
High fees would make additional courses in private institutions near impossible to take. But the stars of good fortune are now shining bright for such students.
Enter STARS (Strengthening Teaching-Learning and Results for States).
Under the central scheme, Kerala has launched an initiative that will see the setting up of 210 Skill Development Centres (SDC) in the state. These centres will become functional in the second week of May. Another plus is the placement facilities available.
Rajalakshmi D, who passed Class 10, is a beneficiary of the STARS Skill Development Course.
'For students like me, who come from financially weak families, centres like SDC offering free courses that equip you with specific skills making you employable is a blessing,' Rajalakshmi tells TNIE. She is one of around 700 students in the pilot batch to benefit from tailor-made courses started in 2024.
'I joined the fitness trainer course at the SDC at GVHSS, Kunjathur, in Kasaragod district. The training, theoretical and on-the-job, there made me employable. And the result is there for everyone to see. I got placed with a top fitness centre in Kanhangad,' Rajalakshmi says.
The programme is being implemented by the general education department in association with the Samagra Shiksha Kerala (SSK) to equip students up to the higher secondary level with skills that will enable them to get employed in fields they have an aptitude for.
Elaborating on the initiative, an SSK official says, 'In the pilot phase, one centre each was launched in all 14 districts of the state. Each centre had a batch of 50 students. Forty percent of the 700 students have been placed in various sectors.'
Following up on the success of the pilot initiative, the state government decided to expand the project.

KOCHI: The Kerala Engineering, Architecture, and Medical (KEAM) 2025 saw Ernakulam district bagging the top two ranks. John decided to join KE HSS since they had a tie-up with the Brilliant Coaching Centre. "He was advised by his Physics teacher to do so," his father adds.

After TNIE report, GHMC starts road restoration in Hydernagar
HYDERABAD: Taking note of a report published in these columns, the GHMC has said it will restore the damaged road near Prasad Hospital in Hydernagar (Ward No. 123). On June 28, TNIE published a story — 'Pothole-ridden road near hosp puts lives on risk' — that highlighted the dangers posed by the battered stretch. In response, the GHMC shared an Action Taken Report (ATR) acknowledging the issue and detailing proposed measures. Signed by the executive engineer, Kukatpally Circle-24, the report confirmed the road was 'badly damaged'. It noted that the proposal for permanent restoration had been administratively sanctioned by the GHMC Commissioner, and tenders would be floated after budget allotment. 'Temporary restoration with cement concrete will be taken up after the evaluation of tenders for road repair and maintenance works scheduled on June 30,' the authorities stated. The GHMC also said the site was jointly inspected by the Kukatpally zonal commissioner, the superintending engineer (SE) and field staff.

Coimbatore school education department lays down action plan to solve learning gaps
COIMBATORE: Following the poor performance in the State Level Achievement Survey (SLAS), the district school education department has implemented an action plan to resolve learning gaps and improve learning outcomes among primary school students. This action plan has been executed in primary and middle schools with the help of the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET). An educational officer told TNIE that as per the action plan, students were categorised into four educational levels based on performance-- A, B, C, and D. "Based on this, teachers will place greater emphasis on C and D category students. Their teaching method will prioritise conceptual understanding over memorisation. Before this, teachers should ensure that reading and writing skills are strong," he said. "Following this, headmasters should assess students' learning outcomes twice every week. Secondly, Block Resource Teacher Educators (BRTEs) and Block Educational Officers (BEOs) will review student assessment reports and also assess students themselves.
