Bokaro: A pall of gloom has engulfed Karipani village under the Gomia block of Bokaro district, following the tragic death of 39-year-old Ganesh Karmali in a recent terror attack in Niger, a West African country.
Karmali was working as a security guard with a private company in the country when he was killed in a brutal terrorist assault in the Dosso region on July 15. His mortal remains are yet to be brought back to India, and the grieving family is enduring an agonising wait that may stretch over a week.
Fighting back her tears, Ganesh's elder daughter Sapna Kumari, appealed to the Centre to intervene and ensure that the company her father worked for compensates their family adequately.
"My father was not ill, nor did he die in an accident. He was murdered by terrorists. The the external affairs minister, must ensure justice. My father was the sole breadwinner of our family. We are devastated," she said.
Recalling the painful memories, Sapna also said her father had promised to attend her wedding on July 2, but the company denied him leave. "If he had returned for the ceremony, he might still be alive. It was very painful for any girl to get married without her father's presence," she said, finally wiping off a tear..
Sapna was en route to Bangalore with her husband when she received the devastating news. "I got the call on the train. I de-boarded midway in Odisha and returned home. My younger sister and brother are, too, small to even understand this loss. We just want to see him one last time," she said.
Ganesh's wife, Yasoda Devi, is in a state of trauma. "My life has shattered. I have no idea how to raise my children alone. The company offered Rs 15 lakh, but how long will that last?"
Bokaro labour superintendent Ranjit Kumar confirmed that the Indian embassy in Niger is working closely with the Jharkhand Migrant Cell to provide all help to the family of the deceased. "NOC has been issued by the Niger govt and the body is likely to arrive within a week," he added. The entire village of Karipani stands united in grief, mourning a man who left home seeking hope and returned only as a memory.

West Bengal police launches helpline for migrant workers facing harassment in other States
Amidst reports of targeting of migrant workers from West Bengal in BJP-ruled States, the West Bengal police have started a helpline number for workers to seek assistance. Responding to the development, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari shared his email-id and added that any citizen of the State who is 'harassed by Mamata's police' may reach out to him. The West Bengal police in a social media post stated that they are receiving 'reports from various sources that many people from Bengal, who have gone to work in other states, are facing various problems and instances of harassment'. 'If any citizen from Bengal working in another state faces any kind of trouble, we appeal to them or their family members to immediately inform their local police station. You may also contact the district control room,' the police said in the post. The West Bengal police in the social media post said that the helpline number is 9147727666 which will be available only on WhatsApp and the people can send a message there with the necessary information, including your name and address. 'Each piece of information will be verified, and we will coordinate with the concerned state authorities to take the necessary action,' the police said. According to West Bengal Chief Minister about 1000 migrants from the State were detained in other States. There have been reports of detention of migrant workers in BJP ruled states on allegations of being Bangladeshi nationals. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari called the post by West Bengal police politically motivated to mislead Bengalis residing in various parts of India for work, so that they become alarmed and confused. Bhatkhande scam kingpin still on run
Lucknow: The CID has intensified its probe into the Rs 3.31 crore scam at Bhatkhande Sanskriti University, carrying out searches to trace the alleged mastermind — administrative officer Ram Kumar — who remains absconding. Seven people, including two faculty members, were arrested on July 23. Ram Kumar allegedly manipulated tender and construction processes under the patronage of top officials. Contracts worth crores were reportedly handed out arbitrarily, often without any formal tender process — sometimes even on plain paper. He fled weeks ago as the probe loomed. CID sources say further arrests are likely as the investigation progresses.

Wife of BNP man who lived illegally in India for 30 yrs held
Bagdah (N 24 Parganas): A BNP (Bangladesh Nationalist Party) worker's wife was arrested on Saturday at Bagdah in North 24 Parganas for allegedly aiding and harbouring her Bangladeshi husband, who had been living illegally in India for nearly 30 years using forged documents. Police sources said BNP worker Rezaul Mondal had illegally entered India three decades ago and married Sherful Mondal of Bagi village in Bagdah. To obtain Indian identity documents, he allegedly showed his mother-in-law as his mother. There are also allegations that Rezaul cast votes in India. Police sources said Rezaul was from Jhinaidah village in Bangladesh. Following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina govt, Rezaul returned to Bangladesh a few months ago, police said. "The matter came to light during an investigation after Rezaul's son Firoz eloped with a girl. Police found both Rezaul and his son were Bangladeshi nationals," said a senior officer of Bongaon District Police.
