Footy star Willie Rioli sent a threatening text to a rival player after their match - and what the AFL did next has left fans FURIOUS

Daily Mail06-05-2025
Footy fans have expressed significant shock about the lack of sanctions given to Port Adelaide's Willie Rioli for sending a threatening message to a Western Bulldogs player about teammate Bailey Dale.
Rioli went unpunished after an investigation by the AFL after he sent an intimidating text about Dale to one of his teammates after the team's big win over the Power in Ballarat.
Rioli allegedly wrote that he has mates in Darwin and Dale should be wary of leaving his hotel room when his team play in the Northern Territory capital this Saturday.
The footy star has since apologised to Dale for sending the text - and the AFL, and both clubs, feel that no further action should be taken on the matter.
The AFL letting Rioli off with nothing more than a warning has prompted a chorus of criticism from footy fans who have taken issue with the league's confusing disciplinary standards.
'You get weeks these days for pushing an opponent, or dressing up for Mad Monday but nothing for sending threatening messages to another player, what a circus,' posted one X user.
'So let me get this straight, threaten someone and it's ok but give someone the finger and you get fined? Make it make sense,' replied another.
'Really disappointed with the @AFL's response to the Willie Rioli incident. Weak response from a weak organisation. Threatening someone's life, whether directly or indirectly, should carry an automatic 12 month minimum ban. Absolute joke of a response,' posted a third.
Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge said Dale was 'OK', but was keen to put the matter behind him.
'It's just one of those things where you wake up and all of a sudden you're part of a storyline, and you didn't think you would be, and the quicker it's in the rear-vision mirror, the better for him,' Beveridge said on Tuesday.
The league put out a brief statement, saying it had 'reminded both clubs to ensure any communications remain respectful'.
Beveridge said he was 'not surprised' the AFL had not sanctioned the West Coast premiership player.
'Obviously Willie's made a mistake. He'll learn from it, and we're all OK with that,' he said.
'Discretion there is important, and I think that's how both clubs are treating it.
'Let's just learn from it and move on and make sure it doesn't happen again.'
Port responded to the incident on Monday night, saying the 'matter has now been resolved privately'.
Rioli can accept a $1000 fine for striking Dale off the ball in the third term of Saturday's match.
Along with the private message, Rioli also posted on Instagram, expressing his frustration about being financially penalised.
Last month Rioli posted on Instagram after Port's emotion-charged win over Hawthorn.
Rioli spoke of his hatred for the Hawks, and the backlash prompted him to briefly take leave from the club.

Sportsbet advertises multi bets on AFL website after pulling TV ads due to ‘community sentiment'

Gambling giant Sportsbet has splashed ads for its expanded same-game multi bets on the AFL's website, months after pulling them from free-to-air broadcasts due to 'strong community sentiment'. The ads, which reveal Sportsbet now accepts same-game multi bets on how many possessions a player acquires during a match, encouraged people to 'bet now' and surrounded the AFL homepage. While the ads did not breach any rules, Sportsbet has previously voluntarily withdrawn ads for the same product on different platforms 'after listening to stakeholder and community sentiment on gambling advertising'. 'Same-game multis' allow gambling on a combination of outcomes such as possessions and goal scorers, and all must succeed for the bet to be paid out. Analysis has shown that multi-bets have a high fail rate for gamblers. Sign up: AU Breaking News email Crossbench MP Kate Chaney, who sat on a parliamentary inquiry into gambling harm led by the late Labor MP Peta Murphy, said the ad showed why the gambling industry's attempts to self-regulate had failed. 'Expecting gambling companies to take their own hand out of the cookie jar is a joke and the government must know it,' Chaney said. In early July, weeks before the ad was published, the communications minister Annika Wells met the AFL's chief executive, Andrew Dillon, to discuss the government's long-awaited plan to restrict gambling advertising. The former communications minister Michelle Rowland's proposed changes, made in response to June 2023 parliamentary inquiry, were abandoned shortly before the election. The inquiry recommended a total ban on gambling advertising after a three-year transition period. ACT independent senator David Pocock urged the federal government to fast-track its reforms and said the industry could not be trusted to regulate itself. 'Sportsbet response to concern over recent advertising highlights this, after they pulled advertisements from TV only to then splash them over the AFL's website,' Pocock said. Prof Samantha Thomas, a Deakin University academic who specialises in gambling and who gave evidence to the inquiry, said the ad was 'a clear example of why comprehensive bans are needed'. 'Partial restrictions will continue to leave the door open for the gambling industry to promote their products across multiple platforms,' Thomas said. The Alliance for Gambling Reform's chief executive, Martin Thomas, accused Sportsbet of 'virtue signalling' by removing its ads from television and then 'resorting back to type' by splashing them on the AFL's website. Sportsbet and the AFL were contacted for comment. Anyone who visits the AFL website can also opt out of seeing gambling odds and wagering content. Earlier this year, Guardian Australia reported on leaked documents showing the AFL received a bigger share of gambling revenue when people submitted same-game multi bets. Shortly before the season began, the AFL sought an even bigger share of revenue from these bets, arguing the money was necessary to address an 'unprecedented' increase in 'integrity risks' posed by the wagering industry. That proposal was not accepted by some bookmakers and the Victorian gambling regulator is considering whether to make an unprecedented intervention in the dispute, which could set a limit on the league's revenue from wagering. In recent weeks, Wells has also discussed proposed gambling ad restrictions with NRL chair Peter V'landys and chief executive Andrew Abdo, Seven West Media's chief executive, Jeff Howard, and the chief executives of Free TV Australia and Foxtel. Before those meetings, Wells met Rod Glover, who was Peta Murphy's husband for more than 20 years before she died from cancer in December 2023, six months after delivering her report into gambling harms. So far, sources familiar with the consultation say it has focused on identifying the main objections and testing support for compromises. They say the government intends to act by the end of the year. In Australia, Gambling Help Online is available on 1800 858 858. The National Debt Helpline is at 1800 007 007. Actor who played Maddie McCann suspect Christian Brueckner has terrible secret

A documentary showed a re-enactment of a rape the victim claims was carried out by Christian Brueckner, a suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann - but the actor has his own troubling past An actor who played a knife-wielding rapist in a re-enactment of a brutal sex attack was found guilty of a domestic violence-related offence. A report on the Australian TV channel Nine's flagship TV show 60 Minutes re-enacted an attack on Irishwoman Hazel Behan, who claimed she was raped by the prime suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, Christian Brueckner, in 2004. Clad in a balaclava, Joel Aaron Baker played the attacker in that re-enactment and recently boasted about his role on the programme. The documentary about Brueckner aired just 10 days after Baker was placed on a conditional release order, following his conviction for destroying or damaging property, a domestic violence-related offence. He was cleared of assaulting his wife during his appearance at Sutherland Local Court in New South Wales on May 29. 'A small acting job I got to do for a re-enactment on last night's episode of 60 Minutes on Channel 9,' he wrote on Facebook after the 60 Minutes episode aired. 'Warning: It's not a nice topic related to the Madeleine McCann case, but you can see the full story on @9now.' He also posted the clip on his Instagram account. His boasting upset his wife's family. 'What has caused our family even more distress is Joel's immediate public sharing of the 60 Minutes segment via his social media, seemingly celebrating his appearance despite the deeply concerning nature of his personal conduct,' said a relative, according to the Mail Online. The conditional release order, stemming from an incident at the ex-couple's marital home in 2024, says he is prevented from going within 50 metres of his wife or her workplace. He was also made the subject of a two-year apprehended violence order and the conditional release order says he must take part in a domestic violence programme that is supervised by a community corrections officer. Two months earlier, Baker was found not guilty of seven common assault charges, all of them domestic violence related. Baker, 36, has launched an appeal against the conviction. The appeal is listed for hearing at Downing Centre District Court for October 2. The former couple also split in October last year. He is not allowed to contact her unless it is through a lawyer. A spokesperson for Nine said the network was not aware of Baker's history and said actors for re-enactments are sourced through a talent agency. 'We were not made aware of these claims and we are now in the process of removing the footage from the story on online episodes,' the spokesperson said. Baker, a former manager of a McDonald's outlet, has also appeared on the recent World War Two drama The Narrow Road to the Deep North. He also featured in Home and Away and NCIS: Sydney.
