
Vadodara bridge collapse: Multiple vehicles fall into Mahisagar River as Padra-Mujpur Bridge collapses, 8 dead
Six persons were rescued as a team of responders reached the location of the collapsed bridge.
Vadodara Collector Anil Dhameliya stated that nine bodies had been recovered so far during the rescue operation, while six injured individuals have been provided medical treatment.
Speaking to reporters, Collector Dhameliya said, "We have recovered nine bodies so far. Five people were injured, and the sixth injured was found just now, and he is being provided medical treatment."
Five to six vehicles plunged into the Mahisagar river in Vadodara after a portion of the four-decade old Gambhira bridge collapsed on Wednesday, Gujarat's Health Minister Rushikesh Patel said.
A slab of the bridge, located on the river which connects central Gujarat and Saurashtra regions of the state, collapsed, he said.
'Three persons have died and five others have been rescued,' Patel told reporters.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday mourned the loss of lives due to the Vadodara bridge collapse.
'The loss of lives due to the collapse of a bridge in Vadodara district, Gujarat, is deeply saddening. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon,' the PMO said in a post on X, on behalf of PM Modi.
'An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000,' the post added.
Visuals showed the entire slab of the bridge between two piers having collapsed.
The Gambhira bridge located on the Mahisagar river along a state highway collapsed at around 7.30 am, Padra police inspector Vijay Charan earlier said. said. Among the vehicles that fell into the river were two trucks and two vans, he had informed at the time.
According to Patel, the Gambhira bridge was constructed in 1985. Authorities carry out its maintenance periodically as and when required.
'The exact reason behind the incident will be probed,' he told the media.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has ordered technical experts to reach the Gujarat bridge collapse location and start a probe into the incident to find out the reason behind the accident, he said.
The incident occurred at around 7.30 am, and the vehicles, including two trucks and two vans, fell into the river, Padra police inspector Vijay Charan earlier said.
Teams from the Vadodara fire department and locals joined the bridge collapse rescue operation which was still on, an official said.
A team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) also left for the incident site with rescue equipment, the official said.
Sharing a video of the collapsed structure, the Congress party posted on X, "In Vadodara, Gujarat, the Gambhira Bridge built over the Mahisagar River broke in the middle."
The party expressed condolences to the families of the victims of the Gujarat bridge collapse
"In this accident, several vehicles fell into the river, resulting in the tragic death of some people and injuries to many others. The Congress family expresses deep condolences to the affected families. We also pray to God that He grants a speedy recovery to the injured," the post read.
Taking a dig at the BJP-led state government, the Congress said, "This accident exposes the rampant corruption carried out in the name of the 'Gujarat Model'."

Central team assesses damages in Himachal Pradesh's Thunag; DC says Rs 394cr lost
Kullu/Mandi: A central govt team visited the affected areas of Thunag sub-division in Mandi district on Sunday to assess the damage caused by floods and landslides, and was informed that the area suffered Rs 394 crore in damages. Led by G Parthasarathi, joint secretary, ministry of home affairs, the six-member team inspected the damage to houses and other properties in Bagsiad and the nearby village of Sharan. The team also inspected the Industrial Training Institute (ITI) and other damaged structures in the area. During a meeting with the visiting team, Mandi deputy commissioner Apoorv Devgan put losses suffered in the district at Rs 708 crore. Devgan said Karsog suffered a loss of Rs 55 crore and Dharampur of Rs 47 crore. At Fanyaar village, the team reviewed the destruction caused by a landslide and gathered information about the damage to a drinking water supply scheme on Chhadi Khad in Dhangudhar. In Deji village, which was among the worst-hit areas, the team examined a road washed away by the flood and the damage to other public infrastructure. Devgan briefed the central team on the widespread damage in the region and also shared information about the ongoing restoration efforts. Liquor ‘scam': YSRCP MP played key role in policy changes
SIT arrests YSRCP MP Midhun Reddy VIJAYAWADA: YSRCP MP PV Midhun Reddy, arrested by an Andhra Pradesh Special Investigation Team (SIT) in connection with the alleged liquor scam case, has been remanded in judicial custody till Aug 1. Following his arrest Saturday night, he was taken for medical exam to Vijayawada Govt Hospital on Sunday and later produced before ACB Special Court. According to the remand report, Midhun Reddy has been named as accused No 4 in the case related to alleged irregularities in the state's liquor policy between 2019 and 2024, resulting in a 'misappropriation' of about Rs 3,500 crore. The report alleges Midhun Reddy played a role in orchestrating policy changes and coordinating with co-accused to secure kickbacks from distilleries and suppliers. The SIT alleged Midhun Reddy influenced Andhra Pradesh State Beverages Corporation Ltd officials. According to SIT, kickbacks collected from liquor suppliers were routed through a hierarchical chain. The funds were first collected and handed over allegedly to Kesireddy Rajasekhar Reddy, who then 'transferred' them to ex-MP Vijay Sai Reddy, Midhun Reddy, & businessman Govindappa Balaji. These individuals 'transferred' money allegedly to ex-CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy . To execute scheme, officers 'amenable' to the accused's designs were 'strategically appointed to key positions' within govt.

Balrampur court clerk held for role in Chhangur's conversion racket
Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) on Sunday arrested a clerk at Balrampur Court for his alleged association with Jalaluddin alias Chhangur Baba, the mastermind behind an illegal religious conversion syndicate. Rajesh Upadhyay, the accused, was arrested from Chinhat for allegedly providing court-level assistance and funding to Chhangur, making him the sixth associate of Chhangur to be apprehended. ATS sources said that during interrogation, Rajesh confessed to misusing his position to secure court relief for Chhangur in multiple cases. Chhangur faces charges under various sections, including sedition, fraud, inciting hatred among communities and violations of the anti-conversion law. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) previously conducted raids on 12 locations linked to Chhangur in Balrampur. The ATS revealed that Rajesh's wife Sangeeta is connected to a Rs 16 crore property deal in Pune, which is under investigation for potential links to hawala transactions and conversion activities. Earlier, the ED had conducted raids on Rajesh's properties in Lucknow.
