Uzbek delegation visits KPT to explore maritime prospects
KARACHI: A three-member delegation led by Uzbekistan's Ambassador, Alisher Takhtayev visited Karachi Port Trust (KPT) to explore potential opportunities for cooperation and investment in Pakistan's maritime sector. The visit marked an important step in strengthening maritime collaboration between Pakistan and Uzbekistan.
The Uzbek delegation, comprising three senior officials and business representatives, was led by Alisher Tukhtaev, the Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Pakistan. The purpose of the visit was to examine investment potential and partnership opportunities within the maritime and port infrastructure of Pakistan.
This visit followed a recent meeting between the Ambassador and the Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry in Islamabad, where both sides discussed the significance of building sustainable maritime linkages to support mutual economic growth, promote regional connectivity, and ensure long-term prosperity through ocean-based industries.
During the engagement, members of KPT's Transition Management Committee, Abdullah Zaki and Khawaja M Zubair, presented detailed insights into Pakistan's blue economy landscape, particularly focusing on the Karachi Port's role in trade facilitation and development.
The discussions also touched upon projects involving clean bulk cargo handling, logistics connectivity, and Maritime Business District projects, underlining Pakistan's commitment to diversify and sustainable maritime development.
The Uzbek delegation expressed keen interest in the terminal operations of the port and keenly noted the potential of port expansion and other commercial opportunities within the blue economy that the Maritime sector of Pakistan offers.
They acknowledged Pakistan's strategic position as a gateway to maritime trade and viewed the developments at KPT as a valuable opportunity to enhance landlocked Uzbekistan's connectivity to global markets.
The delegation also visited South Asia Pakistan Terminals Limited (SAPTL), where they witnessed modern container handling operations, including the use of state-of-the-art gantry cranes and other advanced equipment deployed by terminal operators.
In a statement, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has highlighted the importance of regional cooperation and underlined Pakistan's commitment to exploring economic avenues within the framework of its expanding blue economy, particularly with Central Asian nations.
The visit underscored the growing sophistication and efficiency of Karachi Port's operations and served as a meaningful step toward fostering Uzbekistan-Pakistan maritime cooperation, he added.

Dar urges India to rethink hostile policies that threaten regional peace, stability
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar has urged India to rethink its present hostile and misguided policies that threaten peace and undermine security in South Asia. Speaking at an event held to commemorate the 52nd anniversary of the Institute for Strategic Studies (ISSI), the minister said that amid the global turbulence and transformation, 'Pakistan is charting a forward-looking course as a confident and self-assured nation - resolutely safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity and shouldering its obligations as a responsible member of the international community'. He said that Pakistan values the efforts of all friendly countries, including the U.S., KSA, UAE, and Türkiye that resulted in preventing further escalation between India and Pakistan and putting the ceasefire in place. 'Going forward, it is essential to consolidate the ceasefire, institute a reliable crisis management mechanism, and develop confidence building measures that would help stabilise the regional security situation,' the foreign minister said. Dar added that the outcome of the 4-day war with India once again underscored the reality that India can neither intimidate nor coerce Pakistan. 'New Delhi must, therefore, rethink its present hubristic and misguided policies that threaten peace and undermine security in South Asia.' Meanwhile, the minister said that Pakistan also believes that time has come to re-imagine regional cooperation in South Asia and in our extended neighbourhood. 'The negative impulses of dominance and hegemony have long stymied this process and made SAARC dysfunctional. Our region instead needs a positive spirit of solidarity, mutually-beneficial collaboration, and shared prosperity,' he said. On Afghanistan, the deputy PM said that in recent months, Pakistan has purposefully made efforts to reset Pakistan-Afghanistan relations on a positive trajectory. He said both the countries have agreed to upgrade the diplomatic representation to Ambassadorial level and extend CPEC to Afghanistan. 'If the Interim Afghan Government works with complete sincerity and wholeheartedly, the fruits of our economic cooperation, efforts for regional integration, and connectivity would be enormous. Not only the people of Afghanistan will benefit tremendously but also the dividends of shared prosperity would extend to Central Asia and beyond.' The ISSI was founded in1973 and has evolved into one of Pakistan's foremost strategic think-tanks. It is known for generating quality research, promoting thought leadership, and fostering inclusive dialogue among diverse stakeholders.

Security arrangements for Muharram: Two ministers visit key procession routes
LAHORE: On the special instructions of Chief Minister Punjab, provincial ministers conducted late-night visits to key mourning sites in Lahore to review the ongoing security arrangements for Muharram. Provincial Minister for Sports and Labour Malik Faisal Ayub Khokhar, along with Provincial Minister for Food Bilal Yasin, Special Assistant to CM Sania Ashiq, CCPO Lahore Bilal Siddique Kamyana, Commissioner Lahore Zaid bin Maqsood, Deputy Commissioner Lahore Syed Musa Raza, and other senior officials, visited Nisar Haveli, Karbala Gamay Shah and Pando Street Imambargah. During the visits, the ministers thoroughly reviewed the security measures in place for the main Ashura procession routes and other significant locations. Police and district administration officials briefed the dignitaries on the overall security plan, deployment of volunteers, CCTV monitoring, security checks at entry and exit points, and contingency planning. Speaking on the occasion, Malik Faisal Ayub Khokhar issued instructions to ensure comprehensive security on procession routes and to immediately address any potential disruptions caused by rainfall. He emphasized the need for cleanliness, adequate lighting, provision of water, medical camps, and other essential facilities. He assured the organizers of the government's full cooperation and reiterated that maintaining peace and order during Muharram is a top priority for the Punjab government. The organizers expressed satisfaction over the arrangements and praised the inter-agency coordination. Furthermore, Faisal Ayub Khokhar appealed to the public, urging citizens of Lahore to fully cooperate with the police and administration during Muharram and demonstrate responsible citizenship. On this occasion, Bilal Yasin stated that the security has been placed on high alert at all procession routes and sensitive locations. Continuous monitoring is being carried out through CCTV cameras from central control rooms. He added that Section 144 is being strictly enforced and any unauthorized processions or gatherings will not be permitted. KP holds awareness session on e-vehicle policy
PESHAWAR: The provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa organised an awareness session on National Electric Vehicle Policy (2025-30) here at Civil Secretariat. It was jointly presided over by Special Assistant to the Chief Minister for Industries, Abdul Karim Tordher, and Special Assistant for Transport, Rangez Khan, along with Federal Secretary for Industries and Production, Saif Anjum. Saif Anjum gave a detailed presentation aimed at promotion of electric mobility and eco-friendly transport across the country. The workshop was attended by Additional Chief Secretary Planning & Development Department Ikramullah, Secretary Planning and Development Department Adeel Shah, Secretary Transport Masood Younas, along with other senior officials, representatives from federal and provincial departments, industrialists, business leaders, President of Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industries (SCCI), Fazal Muqeem, representatives from traders' associations and other key stakeholders. The workshop was organized to raise awareness about the new national policy and to strengthen coordination between federal and provincial governments. Participants actively contributed suggestions for further improving the policy. Under the new five-year policy, a target has been set to convert 30% of the country's vehicles to electric by 2030. To support this transition, 3,000 electric vehicle charging stations will be established nationwide. Addressing the participants, the Special Assistant Abdul Karim Tordher said that the world is moving towards environmentally friendly transport solutions and the promotion of electric vehicles (EVs) is a significant step in this direction. He said that sincere policy-making efforts in Pakistan is a positive step in this regard, but emphasized the urgent need for a clear and comprehensive regulatory framework to ensure effective implementation. He stressed the importance of developing local manufacturing capabilities for electric vehicles, particularly in the production of lithium batteries.
