Inside the problem-plagued making of ‘Jaws' 50 years later: A drunk actor, broken sharks and millions over budget

Yahoo4 days ago
They needed a lot more than just a bigger boat.
They needed over double their initial production budget.
They needed one of their trio of leading actors to not be so drunk all the time that he'd black out at work.
And they needed their three robot sharks — 'playing' the title character — to stop breaking down.
The filming of 'Jaws,' director Steven Spielberg's horror classic that turns 50 on Friday, June 20, was plagued by issues on-set in Martha's Vineyard, Mass., during the spring and summer of 1974.
Yes, the movie grossed $476 million globally and became one of the first blockbusters and a landmark in the horror genre. But it also very nearly didn't work.
'In many ways, launching 'Jaws' was a film production problem analogous to NASA trying to land men on the moon and bring them back,' wrote 'Jaws' co-screenwriter and actor Carl Gottlieb in the book 'The Jaws Log.' 'It just had never been done.'
When producers Richard D. Zanuck and David Brown hired Spielberg to direct a film based on Peter Benchley's 1974 novel 'Jaws,' he was just 27 years old and professionally untested. His theatrical film debut, 'The Sugarland Express,' hadn't hit theaters yet.
But not sold on the alternatives, they went with the young hotshot. Zanuck and Brown budgeted the film at an estimated $3.5 million and wanted production to take 55 days. In the end, 'Jaws' treaded water for over 150 days and cost $9 million.
The biggest diva was the shark.
The producers assumed, as with decades of Hollywood pictures, a real great white shark could be simply trained up to do what they needed, Gottlieb writes. That, obviously, was not going to work — although a stuntman was harrowingly snapped at by the genuine article in the waters of Australia.
So the team planned to build a 25-foot-long mechanical fish. And the only man they could enlist to do it was Bob Mattley, a designer of '20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,' 'Flash Gordon' and others who had came out of retirement for the job. The mechanical beasts were budgeted at $1.2 million (adjusted).
The waves only got rockier. When filming began in the pretty Massachusetts beach town, the shark they called Bruce had never been tested in ocean water. Made of tubular steel covered in a sand-and-paint mixture, each weighed one ton.
The troubles were endless. There were small dents that would cost $50,000 to fix and constant touch-ups requiring the device be laboriously lugged out. Its motor was eroded by salt and the studio thought the teeth were too white, so they were repainted. At one point, Bruce even sank to the bottom of the ocean. The contraption rarely worked two days straight, and constant delays pushed production into July.
There was so much free time, beer had to be banned on the boat.
'All over the picture shows signs of going down like the Titanic,' Gottlieb wrote.
On booze: Robert Shaw, the actor who played Quint the shark hunter, was an Olympian drinker.
During an on-camera interview, the British actor was asked how he prepares.
'Scotch, vodka, gin, whatever,' he said.
But Spielberg underestimated this fact. When shooting Quint's famous monologue to Richard Dreyfuss' Hooper and Roy Scheider's Brody aboard the Orca, he let Shaw throw a few back.
'Robert came over to me and said, 'You know, Steven, all three of these characters have been drinking and I think I could do a much better job in this speech if you actually let me have a few drinks before I do the speech,'' Spielberg told Entertainment Weekly in 2011. 'And I unwisely gave him permission.'
Shaw was plastered. Crew members had to carry him onto the boat, and he was so drunk that they wrapped for the day.
'At about 2 o'clock in the morning my phone rings and it's Robert,' the director added. 'He had a complete blackout and had no memory of what had gone down that day.'
The scene was reshot — sober.
'It was like watching Olivier on stage,' Spielberg said.
'Jaws' was released in theaters on June 20, 1975. The movie became a global mega-hit and launched the career of one of Hollywood's most prominent and influential directors of all time.
However, when 'Jaws 2' hit theaters in 1978, the name on the poster wasn't Spielberg — it was Jeannot Szwarc. The 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' genius was traumatized by the original experience.
'[I didn't come back for the 'Jaws' sequels] because making the first movie was a nightmare,' Spielberg told Total Film in 2004.
'There were endless problems with the shark and it was an impossible shoot. I thought my career was over because no one had ever taken a movie 100 days over schedule.'
Spielberg added: 'It was successful, but I never wanted to go near the water again.'

Christina Haack and Tarek El Moussa's shows canceled at HGTV, per reports. Here's a complete timeline of their home renovation series and spinoffs.

Real estate moguls and exes Christina Haack and Tarek El Moussa are each saying goodbye to one of their HGTV shows, according to reports. A source confirmed to People that HGTV has decided not to renew Haack's Christina on the Coast for another season. The second half of Season 5 of the series debuted in February, just three months after Haack's other show, Christina in the Country, premiered its second season late last year. Haack's ex-husband, Tarek El Moussa, and his wife, Selling Sunset's Heather Rae El Moussa, are also bidding adieu to one of their shows. While the couple does have another season of The Flip Off underway, in which Haack also costars, HGTV did not renew their other show, The Flipping El Moussas, a source told People. The second season of The Flipping El Moussas debuted on the network in December 2024. Haack and El Moussa established themselves as HGTV mainstays in 2013, with the premiere of their 10-season series Flip or Flop. The pair first embarked on their journey with the network as a married couple, before their divorce in 2018. Together, Haack and El Moussa have debuted several shows over the last decade. Below, take a look at their entire roster of series — from the one that started it all to the array of home improvement spinoffs that followed. 'Flip or Flop' (2013-2022) Premiering on HGTV in April 2013, Flip or Flop was Haack and El Moussa's introduction to the world of network television. Haack and El Moussa, who'd been married nearly four years at the time of the show's premiere, chronicled their experiences buying and remodeling fixer-uppers in California. While the series maintained its popularity on the network, Haack and El Moussa announced that they were separating in December 2016. Season 7 marked the first season Haack and El Moussa filmed after deciding to separate. 'Like many couples, we have had challenges in our marriage," the statement read. "We had an unfortunate misunderstanding about six months ago and the police were called to our house in an abundance of caution." They continued, "During this process, we are committed to our kids and being the best parents we can be. We will continue to work through this process civilly and cooperatively, and plan to continue our professional life together." The real estate agents' statement came almost seven months after an explosive altercation took place in their former Orange County, Calif., home, which resulted in police intervention. With a total of 10 seasons and 155 episodes, Flip or Flop reportedly garnered more than 90 million viewers since its premiere. The series was ultimately canceled in 2022, when the show reportedly became 'too intimate' for Haack and El Moussa, who divorced in 2018. Haack and El Moussa continue to co-parent their two children together, daughter Taylor and son Brayden. 'Flip or Flop Follow-Up' (2015) Airing just six episodes, Flip or Flop Follow-Up saw Haack and El Moussa revisit a series of memorable home flips and share a deeper look into the process of remodeling them. 'Christina on the Coast' (2019-2025) Haack, a real estate and flipping expert in her own right, embarked on a solo journey with Christina on the Coast, which debuted in May 2019. Over six seasons, audiences watched as Haack helped clients transform their once lackluster homes into high-end properties in Southern California. The series also gave audiences a look into Haack's personal life after separating from El Moussa. Viewers watched as she balanced parenthood and her career as well as her day-to-day life with ex-husbands Ant Anstead, with whom she shares son Hudson, and Texas realtor Josh Hall. Haack announced the premiere of Christina on the Coast in a June 2018 Instagram post, writing, 'I'm so excited to announce my new series on HGTV called Christina on the Coast, which will debut in early 2019! I will be helping homeowners redesign their outdated properties into beautiful spaces!' The second half of Season 5 debuted in February of this year and was just canceled, according to multiple news outlets. 'Tarek's Flip Side' (2019) In 2019, El Moussa launched an HGTV exclusive digital series called Tarek's Flip Side, in which he gives viewers a more intimate look at his personal life. 'Flipping 101 with Tarek El Moussa' (2021-present) Premiering in a one-hour format in August 2021, Flipping 101 with Tarek El Moussa follows the real estate mogul as he walks real estate novices through the process of successfully flipping a house. While it hasn't formally been canceled, the show's latest season debuted and concluded in 2023. The show also featured El Moussa's second wife, Heather, a luxury real estate agent whom he married in October 2021. The pair welcomed their first child together, son Tristan, in February 2023. 'Christina: Stronger by Design' (2021) Christina: Stronger by Design ran for a single season in 2021 and documented Haack as she embarked on a new chapter of her life with ex-husband Anstead. The series ran for just four episodes. 'Christina in the Country' (2023-present) Expanding beyond her Southern California lifestyle, Christina in the Country follows Haack as she establishes a home for herself in Tennessee. Watching as she expands her clientele to the South, the series follows Haack as she helps Tennessee residents revitalize their spaces through intentional design. Haack's third ex-husband, Hall, was featured in the series, which concluded its second season in December 2024. 'The Flipping El Moussas' (2023-2025) Starring Heather and Tarek, The Flipping El Moussas chronicles the intertwining of the couple's personal and professional lives as they navigate their marriage and careers in real estate. This was recently canceled, per reports. 'The Flip Off' (2025) The El Moussas teamed up with Haack for The Flip Off, which premiered on HGTV in January. Back together professionally, Christina and Tarek have joined forces once more, this time with Tarek's wife, Heather Rae, as they compete to see who can 'find, buy, renovate and flip a house for the biggest financial gain,' per HGTV. Fans have been quick to praise Christina and Heather's friendship. Heather Rae recently posted a tribute to Haack for her 42nd birthday. 'Happy birthday @christinahaack,' she wrote in an Instagram Story on July 9. 'It's crazy how far we've come & most will never understand how we are friends. I'm grateful for our relationship & our ability to rise above the noise! Cheers to you & can't wait to celebrate you! Xo.' Solve the daily Crossword

CEO faces cheating allegations after being caught in embrace with coworker on Jumbotron at Coldplay concert

A married tech CEO got caught in an embrace with a coworker on the Jumbotron at a Coldplay concert causing both to flee in embarrassment and sparking cheating allegations. Viral footage showed married Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and his company's Chief People Officer Kristin Cabot, awkwardly jumping out of each other's arms as they flashed up on a 'kiss cam' during the band's show in Boston Wednesday night, The Sun reported. In the clip, shared on TikTok by user @instaagrace, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin can be heard saying, 'Oh, look at these two' as the camera pans over Byron and Cabot. Byron, who had his arms wrapped around Cabot, quickly let her go as his coworker covered her face with her hands, and he crouched down, trying to hide from the camera. 'Oh, they're having an affair or they're just very shy,' Martin quipped as the pair ran away from where they were standing. Meanwhile, Cabot joined the team nine months ago, according to her LinkedIn. She also purportedly scrubbed her second surname, Thornby, which was in brackets on her social media, according to The Sun. (@calebu2/TMX) The cringeworthy clip took off online Thursday, with hundreds cracking jokes about the awkward situation and speculating that the two were cheating on their spouses. 'lol if they'd have just stuck it out and smiled for the camera this would never have surfaced as virally as it did,' one internet user wrote. 'Their spouses would have left them anyway once they learned of their Coldplay fetish,' another joked. Another user quipped: 'Two rules, never try to hide from the Jumbotron and never run from cops or dogs.' Astronomer did not immediately return The Independent's request for comment.
