The Rise of 84-Month Car Loans: Why Buyers Are Trapped
Although data shows that tariffs have influenced some buyers in the U.S. to defer or delay their buying decisions, other buyers must finance their cars, which keeps a disturbing trend alive among new car buyers.
According to new data released by car buying authority Edmunds, Americans' auto loans are reaching a point where Dave Ramsay and Caleb Hammer would declare a personal finance armageddon. While automakers and dealer groups would advertise their single-digit promotional financing rates as terms that extend over 60 months (5 years) or 72 months (6 years), buyers are stretching their payment plans for much longer.
Edmunds reports that in Q2 2025, more buyers than ever are taking out loans over the course of 84 months (7 years), making up about 22.4% of new-vehicle financing in the quarter, up from 20.4% in Q1 2025 and 17.6% during the same period last year.
Though buyers are willing to stretch and spread out their loan terms for a lower monthly payment, they aren't being spared from paying out the wazoo every month. According to Edmunds, over 19.3% of new car buyers had monthly payments that exceeded $1,000 in Q2 2025, a notable increase from the 17.7% in the previous quarter. As more buyers opt for extended loan terms, Edmunds' consumer insights analyst Joseph Yoon warns that this could have later consequences, especially as the risks and tribulations of car ownership, such as upkeep costs and depreciation, kick in.
"While extended loan terms may make a monthly payment more palatable, consumers need to keep in mind the risks associated with a loan extended that far into the future, including increased costs for upkeep down the line and the risk of being underwater on the loan if the car is traded in before it's paid off," Yoon said. "If payments on a more standard 60- or 72-month loan don't fit your budget, you might consider leasing. While you won't be building equity in your vehicle the way you do with a purchase, leases afford time to get your finances in better shape with lower monthly payments in the meantime."
Although ads on TV during select promotional periods, like certain federal holidays, show that your local [insert automotive brand here] dealer is offering 0% APR loans, or a number close to it (such as 0.9%) on a specific model, these kinds of rates are far out of reach for the average new car buyer. Edmunds says that the average buyer financed their cars at an annual percentage rate (APR) of 7.2%. However, this doesn't mean that 0% finance deals don't exist; in fact, they accounted for 0.9% of new-vehicle loans in Q2 2025. This was the lowest share Edmunds recorded since 2004, down from 1% in Q1 2025 and 2.9% in Q2 2024.
However, while it is commonly known that a sizable down payment is required to achieve manageable monthly payments, in addition to accepting longer loan terms, Edmunds found that buyers are putting less money down on their new car loans than ever before. According to their data, the average down payment that buyers put down on their new-car loans was $6,433 in Q2 2025, which is down from $6,511 during the previous quarter and $6,579 during the same time last year.
At the same time, Edmunds found that new car buyers are financing increasingly expensive vehicles. They found that the average amount financed for new cars climbed to an all-time high of $42,388 in Q2 2025, up from $41,473 during the last quarter and $40,873 during the same time last year.
In a statement, Ivan Drury, Edmunds' director of insights, noted that while it would be easy to assume and point fingers at the Trump administration's tariffs, car prices remain steady at a level that car buyers still can't afford.
"It's clear that buyers are pulling the few levers they can control to manage affordability, whether that's by taking on longer loans, financing more, or putting less money down - even if some of those decisions increase their total costs," Drury said. "Consumers are continuously stretching to afford new vehicles in this market, and while tariffs haven't directly driven these Q2 numbers, they're certainly not going to make things any easier for shoppers moving forward."
We are seeing automakers react to the reality of extended loan payments, too. In fact, the Stellantis-backed Ram Trucks began to offer a best-in-class 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, which gives Ford and Chevy something to think about. However, in its press release, Ram acknowledges that the warranty comes as "more buyers opt for extended loan terms."
"Everything is more expensive, and trucks are certainly no exception. Truck buyers are financing purchases for longer periods of time, with nearly 80% of new truck loans exceeding five years," Ram Trucks CEO Tim Kuniskis said in a statement.
It is one thing for automakers to recognize this reality, but it is another to enable it. This data comes at the same time when auto loan delinquency is at its highest, as 1.4% of auto borrowers were at least 60 days behind on their auto loan payments during the first quarter of 2025, per TransUnion.

Tesla and Musk did not immediately respond to requests for comments. Recent notes from analysts show investors disapprove of Musk's latest political moves across the board. " Elon Musk diving deeper into politics and now trying to take on the Beltway establishment is exactly the opposite direction that Tesla investors/shareholders want him to take," Wedbush Securities analyst and Tesla Bull Dan Ives wrote in a note on Sunday. William Blair analysts Jed Dorsheimer and Mark Shooter wrote in a note on Monday that " investors are growing tired of the distraction" and that shareholders would "prefer this effort to be channeled towards the robotaxi rollout." William Blair also downgraded Tesla from "buy" to "hold" based on regulatory headwinds from Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill," which would eliminate tax credits for electric vehicles. According to Silver Bulletin's composite average of public opinion polls, the share of Americans with an unfavorable view of Musk has now risen to 55% from 45% at the end of 2024, and the trend is present across party lines. Philip Bell, political strategist and CEO of Tower K Group, told Business Insider on Monday that as a Tesla investor himself, he doesn't think it would be disastrous for Tesla if Musk leaves the company entirely to pursue politics. "I think it could be beneficial to Tesla because you'll have that belief of founder risk finally go away," said Bell, "And number two, the DNA that he has infused in Tesla will allow it to succeed for quite some time — there are a lot of people there who are able to innovate and obviously able to do the nuts and bolts of putting cars together."

Take a political time-out, Elon Musk: ‘America Party' rant proves even your genius has its limits
Uncharacteristically, Elon Musk is doing a dumb thing. His threat this weekend to launch a third national party, based on his disappointment at President Donald Trump's failure to eliminate the deficit, is likely to be a disaster — for him, and for America. To be sure, it's risky to bet against Elon. Advertisement He's a once-in-a-millennium human talent, combining genius-level performance in engineering, in business and even in politics. (Leonardo da Vinci was a similarly all-around talent, but how many of his inventions actually got built?) Musk was politically savvy enough to see that a Democratic Party win in 2024 would have doomed his business, his plans for humanity and possibly the United States. He went all-in with his money and his fame to help prevent that calamity, for which he deserves our gratitude. Advertisement But. Musk's disappointment that Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act doesn't cut enough spending has him flirting with the idea of creating the independent 'America Party.' And that's pure foolishness. Advertisement Third parties in America have pretty much always been failures, and ruinous for those looking to rein in government. Teddy Roosevelt's Bull Moose Party handed the White House to Democrat Woodrow Wilson, with disastrous results. Ross Perot's on-again-off-again campaign — like Musk's, focused on the national debt — ushered in Bill Clinton. Musk's effort is likely to do the same, splitting the votes of Americans who want reform in Washington. Advertisement And it runs the risk of losing the midterms to the Democrats, which will guarantee no action on spending cuts, likely followed by a White House loss for the GOP in 2028. Elon and his fans are right that the debt is an existential threat. But we can't attack it without first taking apart the coalitions that created the problem. That's what Trump is doing. The old establishment GOP of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan is gone. The new MAGA party has only a slim majority in Congress — but it was enough to pass Trump's budget bill last week. And while the OBBBA doesn't directly slash the debt, it contains several provisions making it easier to do so. Capping federal student loans will force university tuitions down, which will both cut federal spending and throttle the cash that higher education — a money laundry and employment farm for Democrats — has to play politics with. Massive deportations will decrease the illegal population in time for the 2030 census, costing Democratic states seats in the House and helping to cement a GOP majority, while improving the lives of working-class Americans and boosting tax receipts. Advertisement Even Trump's much-maligned tariffs are returning more revenue than predicted, further reducing future deficits. His policies are already spurring faster economic growth, which (see: Argentina) will help, too. Musk wanted more cuts, and I too would have been happy to get them. But as a technology guy, he must know that major advances require first developing the tools needed to do what you want to do. Advertisement Politics isn't all that different, really. A bigger majority in the House and Senate will free the GOP to go after spending more aggressively. With the Republicans' current razor-thin majorities, passing the OBBBA at all was something of a miracle. And yes, it required them to buy crucial votes with provisions that are basically pork. That's how Congress works, especially with a narrow majority. Advertisement Add 20 or 30 seats in the House, and even as few as two or three in the Senate, and serious change will be much, much easier. There's another cost to Musk's involvement in politics, given his stature as a once-in-a-millennium talent. As someone who's long backed his space-exploration goals — I was policy chair for the National Space Society when many of the legal changes that made companies like SpaceX feasible were put into place — I believe his support for human settlement of the solar system should be his primary focus. That's the place where Musk is literally irreplaceable. Advertisement Putting down your tools to pick up a hose when the house is on fire makes sense, even if you're Leonardo da Vinci. But once the fire's out, it's best to let someone else rebuild the house while you focus on your true calling. Others can hammer a roof together. No one else can paint the Mona Lisa or the Last Supper. I think Musk has enjoyed his political work, which brought him unaccustomed adulation and a break from his grueling routine. But when you have a vocation that matches your unique talents, it's best to focus on that. (Look at Elvis Presley, who wasted many years on acting — at which he was not uniquely talented). T-Mobile, Apple, more tech giants may face billions in civil fines
TikTok is one of the five biggest social media platforms, only behind Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Launched in its present form in 2018, as of February 2024, it had been downloaded around 4.7 billion times. After YouTube's success, who would've thought that another video streaming platform had any chance at similar success? I guess only entrepreneurs who think outside the box. For example, TikTok's for your page (FYP) feature allows users to access a never-ending stream of the most popular short clips, even on new accounts that don't follow anyone, giving it an advantage against competitors. Its algorithm is praised for its uniqueness, which entices users to spend hours on the app. FYP is not the only feature that sets TikTok apart from other social media platforms. Its special appeal is also built on short-form video content, a user-friendly interface and an emphasis on making engagement with videos feel more personal and impactful. However, with popularity comes the question of responsibility. Over the last couple of years, TikTok has been under scrutiny over national security concerns. In 2020, the first Trump Administration tried but failed to use its emergency power to block TikTok in the country. The government was and is still worried, because the Chinese company ByteDance owns TikTok, leaving user data vulnerable. The main concern is that the Chinese government might access that user data or manipulate the platform for its own purposes. Three years later, the Biden Administration banned TikTok on devices used by federal employees, and in 2024, both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate passed legislation requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok or be banned in U.S. app stores and websites. The bill was signed into law by then-President Biden. Related: Facebook makes bold effort to take down TikTok The same year, TikTok filed suit, calling the law unconstitutional, but a federal appeals court unanimously upheld the TikTok ban regulation, writes TechTarget. On January 19, 2025, TikTok stopped working for 170 million Americans after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against TikTok's bid to avoid a ban. The app was also removed from app stores. Then on January 20, the app returned after President Trump signed an executive order delaying enforcement of the ban for an extra 75 days, or until April 4. Trump extended the deadline two more times, with the latest extension announced in June and set for September 17, 2025. The initial law signed by President Biden noted that any company continuing to support TikTok's operation in the U.S. faced up to $850 billion in liability, writes PhoneArena. The day after the first expansion of President Trump's executive order, the administration sent letters to tech companies including Apple, informing them that they will not face penalties if keeping TikTok online. Related: Amazon shuts down another key business location Considering that the executive order did not make TikTok legal again, Tony Tan, an Alphabet (GOOGL) stockholder, is raising serious concerns. Tan asks: What if a future court ruled that President Trump didn't have the power to use an executive order to reverse a law passed by the Senate, the House, and signed by the sitting president? Earlier this year, Senator Edward Markey, Senator Cory Booker, and Senator Chris Van Hollen raised the same concern in a letter written to the president. Senators wrote that such non-enforcement of the TikTok Ban "was not only unlawful but also raised serious questions about TikTok's future, as the law imposes liability - up to $850 billion - on companies for facilitating TikTok's continued operations in the United States." The lawsuit argues Google shouldn't rely on President Trump's executive order and Attorney Generals' letter alone to protect them from legal risks, and that the tech giant could be liable by a future president, or even Trump, who could change his mind, writes Wired. "There is a federal law that says the TikTok app should not be on your store, and I can see TikTok is on the app store," Tan says of Google, according to the outlet. "Congress passed the law, and the Supreme Court upheld it. It's not debatable." Other tech firms that might face similar risks include Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, T-Mobile, and Oracle.
