Four-run uprising in 11th carries Orioles over Rangers
July 1 - Luis Vazquez, Ramon Laureano and Gunnar Henderson drove in runs in the 11th inning to lift the Baltimore Orioles to a wild 10-6 win over the Texas Rangers on Monday in the opener of a three-game series in Arlington, Texas. Vasquez, who was pinch hitting, produced the game's winning run with an RBI single off Hoby Milner (1-2) that scored Vasquez. After a walk to Jackson Holliday, Laureano added to the lead with a double -- his third double and fourth hit of the game -- to drive in Vazquez. Henderson then plated Holliday and Laureano to help the Orioles to their second straight win and third in their past four outings. Keegan Akin (3-0) backed into the victory despite allowing three runs (two earned) in the 10th inning, with Andrew Kittredge pitching the 11th. It was the fourth straight extra-inning game for Texas, tying a record set Sept. 16-19, 2002 over four contests in Seattle. Baltimore got three runs in the third inning. Holliday and Laureano singled to open the frame, and Henderson walked to load the bases. Gary Sanchez then ripped a double into the left field corner and scored all three baserunners as the Orioles built a 3-0 lead. The Rangers pared the lead to 3-2 in the sixth on Marcus Semien's two-run home run that allowed Corey Seager, who had walked, to jog across the plate in front of him. Texas tied the game in the seventh with two outs. Michael Helman walked against Orioles reliever Seranthony Dominguez and stole second, coming all the way home when Sanchez's throw careened off Helman and bounced into left center field. Helman sprinted around third base and scored when Henderson's throw to the plate was booted by Sanchez. Henderson's two-run home run off Robert Garcia in the 10th inning was followed three batters later by Colton Cowser's solo shot off Shawn Armstrong to give the Orioles a 6-3 lead. But the Rangers' Adolis Garcia re-tied the game with a three-run blast off Akin in the bottom of the frame to push the game to the 11th inning. Neither starter -- the Orioles' Trevor Rogers or Patrick Corbin for Texas -- was involved in the decision. D-backs end 4-game skid with late rally against Giants
July 1 - Alek Thomas had three hits and scored twice, including the go-ahead run on a Geraldo Perdomo single in the seventh inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the San Francisco Giants 4-2 in the opener of a four-game series on Monday in Phoenix. After a two-run double by Tyler Fitzgerald drew the Giants even at 2-2 in the top of the seventh, the Diamondbacks pushed across the eventual difference-maker in the bottom of the inning against San Francisco ace Logan Webb. Thomas and Jose Herrera hit consecutive one-out singles before Perdomo's blooper over the head of shortstop Willy Adames. The Giants appeared once again to tie the score in the eighth when Christian Koss launched a high drive toward the top of the left field fence. Diamondbacks left fielder Tim Tawa made a leaping effort and reached toward the top of the fence as a fan was extending a glove toward the hit. The ball went over Tawa's glove and into the fan's mitt. The umpires initially ruled fan interference and called it the second out of the inning, but a replay review showed there was no contact between the gloves and Tawa's path at the ball was not impeded. However, it was also ruled that the ball would not have cleared the fence without the interference, and Koss was awarded just second base. Diamondbacks reliever John Curtiss then struck out Rafael Devers -- his fourth straight whiff on an 0-for-4 night -- and Shelby Miller came on to fan Heliot Ramos to strand Koss and allow Arizona to retain its one-run lead. Eugenio Suarez led off the bottom of the eighth with his 26th homer of the season, giving Miller an extra run of cushion for the ninth. The veteran then retired the side in order for his 10th save, ending Arizona's four-game losing streak. The Diamondbacks scored the game's first run on a throwing error by Giants catcher Patrick Bailey on a Herrera sacrifice bunt in the third, scoring Thomas, who had doubled. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a solo homer, his 11th, off Webb in the sixth. Curtiss (1-0) got two outs and was credited with the win after Ryne Nelson held the Giants to two runs and five hits over 6 2/3 innings. Nelson struck out seven without issuing a walk. Webb (7-6) was charged with three runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. He walked one and fanned seven. Reports: Bucks retain Kevin Porter Jr., Gary Trent Jr., Tauren Prince
July 1 - Three veteran free agents agreed to two-year contracts to remain with the Milwaukee Bucks, according to multiple media reports on Monday. Kevin Porter Jr.'s deal reportedly is worth $11 million, with Gary Trent Jr. to get $7.5 million and Taurean Prince to receive $7.1 million. Milwaukee did lose one player on Monday, as big man Brook Lopez and the Los Angeles Clippers agreed to a two-year, $18 million contract, per multiple media reports. Porter, 25, joined the Bucks in a February trade with the Los Angeles Clippers. He ended the season averaging 10.3 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.4 assists, down from his career norms of 13.9, 4.1 and 4.6 respectively, in 271 games (150 starts). He previously played for the Cleveland Cavaliers (2019-20) and Houston Rockets (2020-21 to 2022-23). Trent, 26, just completed his first season with the Bucks, averaging 11.1 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.2 assists. In 415 career NBA games, including 210 starts, with the Portland Trail Blazers (2018-19 to 2020-21), Toronto Raptors (2020-21 to 2023-24) and Milwaukee, Trent has averages of 13.7 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists. Prince, 31, also has spent only one season in Milwaukee, producing 8.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists.
