New interactive maps track Coastal Georgia barrier island sea turtle activity in real time
One of the maps displays locations where diamondback terrapins have been spotted along the 6-mile-ling Jekyll Island Causeway. It states whether the turtle was found alive, dead, or injured. It also provides daily terrapin counts and historical data.
A second map tracks sea turtle nesting activity along Jekyll Island's beaches showing approximate locations. Exact locations are not used to protect against poaching.

State report: MARTA escalator had missing parts during mishap that hurt Beyoncé fans
A new state report shows that a MARTA escalator was missing several parts before multiple people were injured while leaving a Beyoncé concert. A report by the Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner says that three drive belts were found missing from the escalator's top drive motor and another was missing from the bottom drive motor. However, the OCI report says it was unclear if the belts were missing at the time of the incident or if they came off due to the incident. Six others were treated on the scene for injuries, according to the OCI report. As it examined the bottom drive motor, OCI said a fourth belt was also found off the pulley, and two others had 'walked to the top side of the pulleys.' The report says the high passenger volume that night and the motor drive belts missing 'would have caused an over-normal operating speed condition, leading to the injuries' experienced by 13 people. According to the investigation, the MARTA escalator malfunctioned as 'several patrons rush[ed] toward' it while trying to avoid an insect, according to MARTA police. The sudden increase of people on the escalator made the equipment 'jerk, speed up, and eventually stop, causing multiple injuries' to those who were on the escalator at the time, the report says. The escalator remains shut down for repairs, which were approved to move forward. Another inspection of the escalator will happen before it is returned to service. Scientists analyze chunk of meteorite that fell to Earth last week in GA
A meteorite fell to Earth in Georgia last Thursday, and Channel 2's Linda Stouffer visited scientists in Bartow County to get a closer look at a piece of it. It blasted into Earth's atmosphere 27 miles above Georgia and was found by a meteorite hunter in Henry County. Researchers at the Tellus Science Museum in Cartersville are analyzing one of the largest pieces of the meteorite found so far. It weighs 150 grams and measures two inches by three inches. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] 'That is much bigger than what I thought it was going to be, so I'm really surprised that we got like a nice chunk like this,' Astronomer Karisa Zdanky said. 'You can just see like kind of the exact lines on the fusion crust of it just barreling through our atmosphere. So it's just really impressive to look at.' The meteorite is billions of years old, and you can see it later this summer at the Tellus Science Museum. Scientists have a lot to learn about the meteorite, including what kind of rock it is. It may have even come from outside our solar system.
