Union minister for communications
Jyotiraditya M Scindia
on Thursday hailed
India Post
as the most extensive and far-reaching distribution network in the world.
Addressing postal employees, he urged them to work towards turning India Post into the world's largest logistics organisation.
No other distribution channel in the world is as wide or as deep as India Post, Scindia said while addressing the Gramin Dak Sevaks Sammelan at K P Puttana Chetty Town Hall in Bengaluru. Gramin Dak Sevaks (GDS), or village postal workers, he said, are the backbone of the country's rural postal network.
Highlighting India Post's vast presence, he noted, 'India post has 1.64 lakh points of presence, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, from Bharuch to Tawang.'
Scindia stressed the importance of adapting to change, urging postal staff to embrace tools like handheld devices and DARPAN (Digital Advancement of Rural Post Office for A New India).
'Today, we have the capability of becoming the largest logistics organisation in the world. No one has the human resources to be able to do this apart from us. But we've got to make sure that we are at the cutting edge. Which means we need to innovate.
We need to think about productivity,' he said, as cited by PTI.
The minister also emphasised that post offices must introduce new products and services to stay relevant in a changing world.
'For example, we are now starting to work for mutual fund companies doing KYC norms for them.'
The minister said a customer-centric India Post could only emerge if all 2.74 lakh employees work with dedication and passion. Scindia said India Post will receive substantial capital investment to upgrade its infrastructure and urged employees to play their part in driving this transformation.
'We are going to become service-driven, and we are going to ensure that we transform ourselves from a cost centre into a profit centre for the Government of India,' he said.
Scindia said he remains committed to ensuring post offices evolve into a gateway to the world for every common citizen. "Anything and everything that a citizen in our country needs, requires, wants, must be in our post offices," he stated.
During the Sammelan, 15 Gramin Dak Sevaks from across Karnataka were honoured for their exceptional service.
Scindia reflected on his own childhood, recalling how he would wait eagerly at boarding school for letters from home.
'My Grameen Dak Sevak transmits emotion from one human being to another in the form of the letter,' he said. 'You cannot put a monetary value on that.'
The event was presided over by Karnataka's chief postmaster General K Prakash. Vandita Kaul, secretary of the department of Posts, and Manju Kumar, member of the postal services board, were also present.

In Madhya Pradesh's Nishad Outreach, A BJP Push For Bihar Polls

Aiming to hit two targets with one arrow ahead of the Bihar elections, the BJP-led Madhya Pradesh government on Saturday organised its first-ever event named after Nishadraj, a friend of Lord Ram in the Ramayana who helped him, Laxman and Sita cross the river Ganga in his boat during their period of exile. The event, for the largely fishing-dependent Nishad community, is significant because the Nishads also have a big presence in Bihar. While the conference focused on fishery development and socio-economic support for the Nishad community, its political undertones were unmistakable, especially since the Nishad and Manjhi vote banks are decisive players in nearly 45 of Bihar's 243 Assembly seats in Bihar. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav made it clear in his address that this was not just a welfare initiative, but a cultural and emotional connect. Referring to Nishadraj, Mr Yadav said: "Maharaj Nishadraj, the devoted friend of Lord Shri Ram, was the first to recognise his divinity. Our fishermen brave the water's depths for their livelihood. This is an act of immense courage and tradition, and it deserves recognition." The BJP hopes that this outreach from a party-ruled state will serve as an example of inclusion and empowerment not just in Bihar, but also in Uttar Pradesh, where the Nishad community plays a key role as well, and where elections will be held in 2027. The party has been actively cultivating ties with migrants and communities from Bihar living in Madhya Pradesh. Earlier this year, the BJP celebrated Bihar Day with grand programmes under the "Ek Bharat - Shreshtha Bharat" campaign, with the presence of top leaders, including Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and then BJP state president VD Sharma. Now, with the Nishadraj Sammelan, the party is tapping into cultural identity and livelihood concerns to bolster support in Bihar. The Sammelan wasn't just symbolic, it came with big-ticket announcements: Fisherman Credit Cards were distributed to 2 lakh families, 453 Smart Fish Parlours will be set up with an investment of Rs 22.65 crore. 3,360 Cage Fish Farming Units will be started at the Indira Sagar Dam with an outlay of Rs 92 crore, a state-of-the-art Aqua Park will be opened in Bhopal at a cost of Rs 40 crore and a Modern Hatchery will be set up for fish seed production at a cost of Rs 217 crore, aimed at reducing reliance on Bengal. Mr Yadav declared fish farming as a new-age industry, emphasising modernisation, skill development, and youth employment. While the previous BJP chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had marked Fishermen Welfare Day every year on July 10, the Sammelan marked a more strategic shift - from ceremonial to tactical. By invoking Nishadraj's legacy and backing it with tangible welfare programs, the Yadav government is setting a development-cum-outreach template. The symbolic proposal to install a grand statue of Lord Nishadraj in Sairspata, Bhopal, only strengthens the intent.

India charts bold path to global 6G leadership, Minister Scindia reviews progress in Bengaluru

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], July 11 (ANI): Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia chaired a key meeting with the Bharat 6G Alliance (B6GA) during his Bengaluru visit this week, where he addressed researchers, industry leaders, and global partners, outlining a bold roadmap for India's leadership in next-generation telecom technologies. Minister Scindia noted that for the first time in history, India is playing a seminal role in setting global telecom standards. This transformation, he said, is being powered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of Anusandhan, Atmanirbharta, and Make in India - Make for the World. India is aiming to contribute 10 per cent of global 6G patents, supported by Rs 239 crore in R&D funding across 111 projects. The Minister highlighted that 99 per cent of mobile phones are now made in India, telecom equipment import substitution has reached 60 per cent, and the country has developed its own indigenous 4G and 5G stacks -- all of which position India as a frontrunner in telecom innovation. Speaking about the Bharat 6G Alliance's strength, Minister Scindia called it 'a group with the capability akin to a million GPUs put together,' and praised its seven expert working groups and over 80 active members for transforming the Alliance into a vibrant hub of innovation and global collaboration. In the interactive session, the Minister urged all stakeholders to take ownership of the 6G mission. 'In PM Modi's India, the government is not in the driver's seat -- you are,' he said. He called for the preparation of a 3-4 year roadmap, broken into monthly targets, and subject to bi-annual reviews to maintain momentum and ensure impactful execution. He emphasised that the Bharat 6G Alliance must emerge as the ecosystem builder that helps India shift from being a knowledge destination to a global telecom superpower. Yesterday's engagement follows the first joint meeting with all seven working groups of the Alliance held in September 2024, also chaired by the Minister. The groups span critical domains including Spectrum, Technology, Devices, Use Cases, Green and Sustainability, Applications, and Outreach -- all essential to the creation of a robust and future-ready 6G ecosystem in India.
