Pravasi Legal Cell demands withdrawal of high consular service charges in Gulf region

Pravasi Legal Cell has urged the Indian Ministry of External Affairs to withdraw its decision to raise consular service fees in the Gulf region, arguing that the move places a severe financial strain on Indian migrant workers.
In a memorandum submitted to the ministry, the organisation's global president, Advocate Jose Abraham, highlighted the disproportionate impact of the increased Consular, Passport, and Visa (CPV) fees on blue-collar workers. 'Many migrants earn modest wages and will struggle to afford the revised charges, which have risen up to fivefold in some countries,' the memorandum stated.
The new fee structure, introduced under an outsourcing policy benefiting private service providers, has seen charges soar - rising from SAR 50-75 to SAR 200-300 in Saudi Arabia and from BHD 5-10 to BHD 20-30 in Bahrain. Pravasi Legal Cell's global spokesperson, Sudheer Thirunilath, called for an immediate review, warning that workers may be unable to renew essential documents, jeopardising their employment and legal status.
Migrant remittances are a major contributor to India's economy, exceeding $100 billion in 2023. The organisation warned that rising service costs could force many to return home, harming both their families and the nation's economy.
The organisation also warned that the sharp fee hike could push many migrant workers into debt and erode their trust in the Indian government, leaving them feeling abandoned at a critical time.

Skoda reveals L&K 130 pickup concept for Tour de France

Mercedes-AMG unveils Concept GT XX

The four-door model is the first to be built on the new skateboard platform, specifically engineered for high-performance electric vehicles. It can be disconnected via a Disconnect Unit (DCU) to reduce energy loss during cruising. Combined, the system delivers over 1,341 BHP, with rear-wheel drive as the default. Inspired by Formula 1 and the AMG One Hypercar, the GT XX's battery features an 800V architecture and supports ultra-fast DC charging. AMG claims charging speeds of up to 850 kW, enabling 400 km of range to be added in just five minutes — sustained across a wide portion of the charging curve. The Concept GT XX signals Mercedes-AMG's next step in high-performance electrification, blending cutting-edge battery tech with motorsport-grade drive systems.

Bahrain's legal pioneer Dr. Hussain Al-Baharna passes away at 93
TDT | Manama Dr. Hussain Al Baharna, the legal scholar who helped shape Bahrain's 1973 Constitution and served as Minister of State for Legal Affairs for nearly a quarter of a century, passed away on Sunday at the age of 93. His funeral will be held at 5pm on Monday at Al Hoora Cemetery. Legal pioneer Al Baharna was among the first Bahrainis to study law abroad, earning his degree from Baghdad in 1953 before pursuing further study in Britain and the Netherlands. He later completed a doctorate in public international law at the University of Cambridge in 1961, cementing a legal foundation that would influence both national and international jurisprudence. He was appointed Minister of State for Legal Affairs in 1971, shortly after Bahrain's independence, and remained in that position until 1995. His contributions were central to the drafting of the 1973 Constitution and the shaping of Bahrain's modern civil law system. International influence Dr. Al Baharna's influence extended beyond the Kingdom. From 1987 to 2006, he served as Asia's representative on the United Nations International Law Commission. He also sat on the board of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration from 2003 to 2005, marking him as a global voice in legal reform and diplomacy. His written works reflect his deep engagement with regional and international legal frameworks. These include A Legal Study and Analysis of the Constitutional State of the Kingdom of Bahrain (2008), Iran's Claim to Sovereignty Over Bahrain (2008), and Political and Constitutional Developments of the Gulf States (2005). Legacy remembered Dr. Al Baharna was widely recognised for his contributions. He received the Arab Historian's Medal in 1986, Bahrain's First-Class State Order in 1996, and the First-Class Order of Shaikh Isa bin Salman in 2001. His legal writings, policy work, and diplomatic service earned him the respect of scholars and statesmen alike. His death marks the end of an era in Bahraini legal history, closing the chapter on one of the nation's most influential constitutional figures.
