Turkey arrested three more opposition mayors early on Saturday, media reports said, indicating it was part of an investigation into alleged organized crime.
The arrests targeted the mayors of the southern city of Adana, Zeydan Karalar, and of the southeastern town of Adiyaman, Abdurrahman Tutderethe, Anadolu state news agency said. The leftwing Sozcu newspaper said the mayor of the southern resort town of Antalya was also detained.

Tom Barrack says Israel and Syria have agreed to a ceasefire

U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack said on Friday that Israel and Syria have agreed to a ceasefire supported by Turkey, Jordan and neighbors. "We call upon Druze, Bedouins, and Sunnis to put down their weapons and together with other minorities build a new and united Syrian identity," Barrack said in a post on X. The Israeli embassy in Washington and Syrian Consulate in Canada did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The ceasefire announcement came after the U.S. worked to put an end to the conflict. Reuters

EU eases Schengen visa rules for Turks; envoy urges further moves

The European Union has eased rules for Turks to use its open-border Schengen area, the bloc's ambassador to Ankara said on Friday, calling for the urgent revival of negotiations on visa-free travel for Turks. For years, Turks have complained about the EU's visa system. The EU has said the processes - managed by accredited visa agencies - have been slow due to the high number of applications and that it is discussing possible workarounds with Ankara. Ambassador Thomas Hans Ossowski said the new rules would help address Turks' complaints over long bureaucratic processes but warned it was not enough to permanently solve the problems. "It will be much easier and much faster for Turkish citizens," Ossowski told reporters in Ankara, referring to the European Commission's new decision, in effect since July 15, simplifying the path to multiple-entry visas for Turks. Turks who previously used visas correctly will be eligible for a six-month visa as early as their second application, followed by one-year, three-year and five-year multiple-entry visas. Reuters

Turkish Security Source says Ankara played crucial role in Syria ceasefire after Israeli strikes on Damascus

A Turkish security source said Thursday that Turkey played a key role in securing a ceasefire in Syria following Israeli airstrikes on Damascus, including through intelligence officials holding talks with the Druze leader in Syria. The source added that Turkish intelligence chief İbrahim Kalın held discussions about the Israeli strikes with his counterparts in the United States, Israel, and Syria, as well as with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
