Tacloban airport passenger nabbed for violating gun ban
According to the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (PNP-AVSEG) on Saturday, the passenger was prohibited from boarding his flight and was nabbed after a routine screening at the airport found in his baggage a replica of a Heckler & Koch MP5 submachine gun, complete with a magazine.
The PNP-AVSEG noted that this was a violation of Republic Act No. 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, in relation to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Resolution No. 11067.
The nationwide gun ban took effect on January 12, coinciding with the start of the election period, and will continue until June 11, 2025.
During this period, the PNP-AVSEG emphasized that the transport of firearms and deadly weapons, including replicas and toy guns, is strictly prohibited.
Toy guns and replicas are included in the list of prohibited items by the Department of Transportation's Office for Transportation Security.
Possession of such items may still also result in being offloaded or arrested even outside the Comelec gun ban period, it added.
'The implementation of these measures is part of our duty to ensure the safety and security of every passenger and flight nationwide. We urge the public to always check their baggage for prohibited items before traveling to avoid inconvenience,' PNP-AVSEG director Police Brigadier General Christopher Abecia said in a statement. —Giselle Ombay/RF, GMA Integrated News

2 'missing links' in missing sabungeros case in police custody — PNP spox
Two people considered as the missing links in the missing sabungeros case are now in the custody of the police, Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesperson Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo said Thursday. The PNP identified the two as siblings of one of the accused and whistleblower Julie 'Dondon' Patidongan, according to a report of Super Radyo dzBB's Mark Makalalad. According to Fajardo, the two were arrested in a Southeast Asian country and were transported to the Philippines on July 22. One of the arrested persons was allegedly the one who was caught in a CCTV footage withdrawing money using the ATM card of one of the missing other one was also caught escorting another victim during an alleged abduction. One of them was arrested due to an arrest warrant for robbery, while the other one for using a different name on his passport. The PNP said the arrests were legitimate as they coordinated the operation with the Bureau of Immigration. A total of 34 cockfighting enthusiasts have been reported missing from 2021 to 2022. According to the police, the missing personalities were kidnapped allegedly due to match fixing or cheating in the cockfighting games. Patidongan claimed that the victims were already buried in Taal Lake. He named businessman Atong Ang as a mastermind in the case and also linked actress Gretchen Barretto to the disappearances. Farmer nabbed for allegedly cultivating marijuana in GenSan
A 53-year-old farmer was arrested after authorities discovered marijuana plants on his farm lot in Barangay San Jose, General Santos City. Police uprooted at least 50 fully grown marijuana plants, each reportedly worth around P200. During the operation, authorities also confiscated a caliber .38 firearm, ammunition, sachets of suspected dried marijuana, and a sack filled with dried marijuana plants. The suspect was taken into police custody and will face charges for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act (RA 9165) and Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act (RA 10591).

SOJ Remulla: There is a new witness in missing sabungeros case
Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said Tuesday authorities will soon present a new witness in the case of the missing sabungeros that will bolster the credibility of whistleblower Julie 'Dondon' Patidongan alias Totoy.
