Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan back in favour as duo get central contracts
It had been in the works for a while and there are few surprises, but the return of Iyer and Kishan remain the biggest highlight in the list. The duo, who despite fulfilling the minimum quota of matches for a contract on a pro rata basis, were
Since then, Iyer, an integral cog in the ODI team, played a crucial role in India's road to title at the ICC Champions Trophy. Which is why, his inclusion in the Grade B category comes as no surprise. Meanwhile, Kishan hasn't played for India since November 2023 and when the 2024 season began, it seemed like he had a long hard road in front of him. His inclusion in Grade C, despite not playing a single game in the season, comes as a big boost for the southpaw who is trying to make a mark in the shortest format.
Apart from Kishan, as many as 18 other players have been drafted in the Grade C category. Most of them would be automatic qualification on pro rata basis (minimum of 3 Tests or 8 ODIs or 10 T20Is within the specified period), especially in the shortest format.
Among the senior pros, there is little change except Pant replacing R Ashwin in Grade B. The A+ category remains the same with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja — four players who feature in at least two formats predominantly. Even though this is a list for the 2024-25 season, it is interesting to see both Rohit and Kohli in A+ category. The future of the two veteran batters were the most discussed topic in the lead up to the Champions Trophy but both of them made it clear in the weeks that followed that they were still keen on playing the two longer formats.
The picture will become clear over the next few weeks when the BCCI selects the squad for the five-match Test series in England. The other thing to note about the latest announcement is that the BCCI did not mention any fast bowling contracts which they had mentioned last season. Apart from Akash Deep, who now has a Grade C contract, there is no official information yet on whether the other four pacers — who were awarded fast bowling contracts — have been offered any sort of contract.
The BCCI haven't made a mention of the remuneration the contracts correspond to but it's Rs 7 cr (Grade A+), Rs 5 cr (Grade A), Rs 3 cr (Grade B) and Rs 1 cr (Grade C).

4th Test: Gill has stood up in toughest moments for India, says Ponting
Despite Shubman Gill falling for 103 on the stroke of lunch during day five's play in the ongoing fourth Test against England, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has lauded the Indian skipper for standing up for the side in the toughest moments of the series. Gill had come out to bat on a hat-trick ball in the first over of India's second innings on day four, but stood up with his patience and gritty nature hit 103 off 238 balls, laced with 12 boundaries. It was his ninth Test hundred and fourth of the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series. He has now tied with legendary batters Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar for most centuries as captain in a Test series, whilst also becoming the first player to hit four hundreds in their debut Test series as captain. The knock of 103 also marked the first time that Gill took more than 200 balls to score a Test century. "He was in at 0-2, and he's a young captain trying to make his mark. When the opportunity arose for him to stand up with the bat, he's done it again. He has done a terrific job so far during the series." "He's a quality player, make no mistake about it. He's elegant and very stylish with the way he goes about it... and he has an immense love for batting. When the moments in this series have been the toughest, he's stood up for India," said Ponting on Sky Sports' broadcast during lunch break. Ravi Shastri, the former India head coach, lauded Gill and England captain Ben Stokes for their gritty display of skills and temperament in the first session. "Test cricket at its best. It's a tough game and it's there for the tough ones to stand up when the occasion demands - like Gill and Stokes." "Stokes was pinching his shoulder, holding his hamstring, but the ball was coming out beautifully. He bowled for over an hour in that first session of play and got KL Rahul out. He looked like the one bowler making the ball talk on this surface," he said. With two more sessions to go, India are at 223/4 in 89 overs and trail England by 88 runs. The visitors' have an arduous task on their hands to save the match and stop England from clinching a series at Old Trafford. What also makes India's task tougher is vice-captain Rishabh Pant will be coming out to bat with a broken right foot sustained during day one's play. "I'd be sending Pant out next, that's what I would do. He's got an injury that makes it sound like he won't play next week anyway, albeit there's a chance it gets worse if he gets hit on the same foot again." "You could look at it two ways: if he goes out to bat, will it hinder their run-scoring? Maybe it does, so maybe they send Shardul (Thakur) in next and then Rishabh after that. But I'd send Rishabh. I think he's better equipped against the newer ball and will combat that better than Shardul might," concluded Ponting.

He was immediately taken off the field and went through scans in the hospital which confirmed his Pant showed great heart on Day 2 as he battled through discomfort and walked out to bat to resume his innings on 37. He went on to score a valiant half century, adding crucial runs for his team down the order. With India facing a herculean task to bat out the entire day 5 to draw the match and stay alive in the series, Pant may walk out to bat as confirmed by India batting coach Sitanshu arrival at the stadium further showed his commitment to the team as he once again seemed ready to go through the pain all over again. Meanwhile, India didn't have a memorable beginning to the final day as England's golden arm, Ben Stokes, once again struck for his team. He got the much-needed breakthrough by trapping KL Rahul in front of the stumps, ending the massive 178-run stand between him and Shubman vs IND 4th Test Day 5 UpdatesAfter losing his partner, Gill continued his innings, giving reassurance to the Indian dressing room. He brought up his fourth century of the series and levelled the record for the most runs by a captain in a Test series in England. However, right after completing the milestone, he ended up poking at a delivery outside the off stump by Jofra Archer and edging it to wicketkeeper Jamie a result, India ended up losing both the set batters in the first session itself, which further dampened their hopes of drawing the game. India went into lunch on 223/4, trailing England by 88 runs with Washington Sundar (21*) and Ravindra Jadeja (0*) at the crease.- EndsTune InMust Watch
