Louis Rees-Zammit returns to rugby after bringing NFL quest to end
Louis Rees-Zammit will return to rugby this summer, ending his quest to make it in the NFL with immediate effect. The Times understands that Rees-Zammit has not yet signed a contract with a rugby club, but this announcement will have put several on alert. 'It was a great experience, but he's coming back to his real sport,' a source said. Rees-Zammit traded rugby for American football in January 2024, before that year's Six Nations, when he left the Gallagher Prem side Gloucester and joined the NFL's International Player Pathway scheme. He signed for the Kansas City Chiefs to play as a running back in March last year and made a handful of appearances in pre-season, but was released during the summer. The Jacksonville Jaguars picked Rees-Zammit up in August 2024, where he was listed as a wide receiver, but he failed to play a full-blown NFL match. On Thursday he announced he would be quitting American football to return to rugby. 'It's been a great experience but it's time to come home,' Rees-Zammit wrote on social media. 'I've decided that this is the best time to make this decision to give myself time to get everything in place for next season. There's only one thing that's on my mind, that's coming back to rugby and doing what I do best. I can't explain how excited I am!' The Welshman is still only 24 years old, is able to sign for any team across the world and will be eligible to play for his country. Any Welsh player with fewer than 25 caps is ineligible for international selection if they play outside of the country but Rees-Zammit won 32 Wales caps before he left rugby. That means the new Wales head coach, Steve Tandy, would be able to select Rees-Zammit for November's Autumn Nations Series matches against Argentina, Japan, New Zealand and South Africa. Despite not playing the sport for almost 18 months, Rees-Zammit will be in high demand from rugby clubs across Europe. Before he left Gloucester, Rees-Zammit earned about £225,000 a year. Some top clubs in the Prem may find it difficult to sign him at this late stage and fit his salary into the £6.4million cap, but not all teams pay up to the top limit. Racing 92, the French Top 14 side, were interested in signing Rees-Zammit before he left rugby. Clubs in France have more money to play with, as their cap sits at £9.25million (€10.7million). Rees-Zammit started his youth career at Cardiff Rugby, as his family lives in the capital city, but moved to Hartpury College across the border when he was 16, as he felt he would have more success developing a rugby career there. During the 2018-19 season he became Gloucester's youngest ever league player at 18 years 70 days, and then the youngest player to score a hat-trick in the league in December 2019. In 2021 he was part of the British & Irish Lions squad that toured South Africa, but did not play in a Test match against the Springboks. That year he was part of the Welsh side that won the Six Nations title. His final match for Wales was the 2023 World Cup quarter-final against Argentina in Marseille, a 29-17 defeat. Rees-Zammit always intended to come back to rugby within the next year to try to make the 2027 World Cup. Rees-Zammit was part of the Jaguars' 17-man practice squad last season, but was not elevated to the main roster to play. Practice squad players can be elevated up to three times during a season but the former rugby star was not called upon. He suffered a back injury this summer, which scuppered his chances of making the early pre-season fixtures in August. Speaking earlier this year Rees-Zammit said: 'International players get probably two to three years to make it in the NFL. So I wanted to do it at a time where I maybe could come back to rugby. I'm 24 now, probably got one to two more years to try and make it depending on how this year goes. I'll be 25, 26 when I go back to rugby. I like to think I can still play at the highest level.'

Football fans rejoice as the NFL returns to action with 2025 Hall of Fame Game: 'I'm treating this like the Super Bowl!'
Football fans across the country are celebrating the return of NFL action with Thursday night's 2025 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game. As part of the pre-season opener, the Detroit Lions and Los Angeles Chargers faced off in the first bit of live pro football since Super Bowl LIX back in February. Despite the fact that it's just a pre-season match-up, fans are ready to embrace the return of the sport and took to social media to share their excitement. Taking to X, one fan wrote: 'I'm watching this pre season game tonight like it's the damn Super Bowl! Football is back! #NFL' Another user on the platform wrote: 'It's only pre season but we finally have real life football to watch. The NFL season is finally here!' 'Wow we made it through the offseason. Another NFL season on the way. Pre season is back tonight,' one user said. Fans were quick to express their excitement over the return of NFL action on social media The excitement from one user in particular was evident, as they said: 'NFL FOOTBALL IS BACK TONIGHT! FELLAS WE ARE SAVED BY THE BELL'. Another fan shared an insight into their evening as they wrote: 'Nachos and football tonight. The best sport is back! #NFL' 'NFL Pre Season starts today. It's time for sweaters, sports and snacks,' another user wrote. Reflecting on some other sports, one fan said: 'We're about a month away from college football, NFL and the Premier League being back. I've got tears in my eyes just thinking about it'. Looking at the game itself, it promises to be an exciting affair with both teams coming in off the back of respective strong campaigns in 2024. Jim Harbaugh led the Chargers to a playoff appearance in his first year with the team, while the Lions won the NFC North for the second year in a row. Fans will be hoping that Thursday night's game will not suffer the same fate that the 2024 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game did last year after it was hit by thunderstorms. Fans did not hold back as they rejoiced in the NFL pre-season opener getting underway The 2024 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio, was disrupted by severe thunderstorms. With 3:31 left in the third quarter, the Chicago Bears held a 21-17 lead over the Houston Texans. However, as heavy rain poured down at Tom Benson Stadium and lightning flashed in the area, players were instructed to exit the field. Spectators abandoned their seats to find cover, and the game was officially canceled 30 minutes later.

Fury as travellers 'break in' to cricket club before camping on the pitch and 'throwing rocks' at passers-by
Locals have been left 'heartbroken' after their cricket club's pitch was 'broken into' by travellers parking vans on the pitch. Plymstock Cricket Club says a 'group of travellers' gained access to their green on July 28 and have since set up an unauthorised encampment on the field. The club, which is based in Plymouth, claimed members of the group have been 'throwing rocks' at passers-by and warned residents to 'stay clear and stay safe'. It says that as a result of the incursion it has had to cancel all fixtures 'for the foreseeable future', with the tennis and football teams also affected. In a statement on social media, the club said: 'Unfortunately our pitch has been broken onto and we now have a group of travellers setting up camp. 'Do no approach the ground as they have been throwing rocks at people. Everyone stay clear and stay safe.' Aerial drone footage shows 20 caravans parked on the club's cricket pitch, with vans and cars also on the green. Lee Garlick, who took the photos, says he was approached by children in a matter of minutes after setting his drone into the sky. 'I parked up in the car park and launched my drone,' he said. 'Within a few minutes, some kids came over and asked what I was doing, so I told them.' He claims shortly after, teenagers, who were around 14 to 16 years of age approached asking similar questions as to why he was flying the drone, claiming it was against the law. 'I again, explained and informed them of the law and I was entitled to do what I was doing,' he said. 'They didn't like this and told me to f*** off and stay away before something happens.' He was also told to 'f*** off and to go play with [his] toy somewhere else' by some vehicles leaving the encampment. 'I don't intimidate easily, so I stayed, finished what I was doing and then left,' he added. The club said the recent development was 'absolutely heart-breaking' as they recently 'put a lot of effort into improving [their] pitch and facilities'. They told the BBC: 'This is going to be a massive step backwards. 'We have been in touch with the council and MP regarding this and hope that they can be moved on soon as this is a very active sports facility used by many in the community.' A Devon and Cornwall spokesperson said: 'We are aware of an unauthorised encampment at Dean Cross, Plymstock and are liaising with the council in relation to this. 'Officers have attended the site and engaged with the group.'
