Government officials and journalists charged for sharing and receiving sensitive information
The drug prosecution case involving the late actor Lee Sun Kyun has received new updates as two government officials as well as a journalist have been charged by prosecutors. According to Korea JoongAng Daily, the Incheon District Prosecutors' Office announced on June 5 that two government officials had been charged without detention for allegedly sharing important and sensitive information with a journalist.
One former police lieutenant with the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency, an investigator at the Incheon prosecutors' office, and a journalist who received and publicly shared the private information have all been charged for leaking information and for sharing private and personal data under the Personal Information Protection Act.
What was leaked?
According to reports, the former lieutenant shared a progress report on the drug case as well as another document in October 2023 by photographing the evidence. The report was confidential in nature, as it contained private details like the names, addresses, and phone numbers of all the individuals that had been identified and were being investigated in relation to Lee Sun Kyun's drug case. The progress report was also prepared and compiled by the narcotics crime investigation team of the Incheon police.
The investigator, on the other hand, had privately leaked information to a reporter. This person had allegedly informed a reporter verbally that actor Lee Sun Kyun was under formal investigation for drugs.
None of this information had been cleared for public release and had been unofficially leaked by the two officials as the case was still being investigated confidentially.
The leaked content was allegedly edited after being received by the journalist and was shared by an unnamed online news portal on December 28 in 2023, that too only a day after actor Lee Sun Kyun passed away and was found.

Lee Sun Kyun, well known for his role in the film 'Parasite', had been under investigation since 2023 for drug-related charges. As per reports, the actor had been regularly attending questioning sessions at the police station. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Seoul Southern District Court found three individuals guilty of violating South Korea's Capital Markets Act after they used confidential information to sell company shares ahead of BTS's hiatus announcement in 2022, states a report on Koreaboo. Prison Sentence and Fines Kim (37), formerly with Source Music, received a 10-month prison sentence, suspended for two years and was fined KWR 231 million (approximately $167,000). Two others employees, Lee of BIGHIT MUSIC and another Kim from BeLift Lab were sentenced to six months in prison, also suspended for two years. Lee was fined KWR 51 million ($47,000). Court's Statement According to court findings, the three were ordered to forfeit the financial gains made from the illicit trades as they acted on non-public knowledge of the group's hiatus. The three reportedly had knowledge of a pre-recorded video announcing BTS's temporary hiatus due to member Jin's impending military service. The video was released on June 14, 2022. The employees sold their HYBE shares, collectively avoiding losses of over KRW 230 million, with HYBE's stock value plummeting by 24.78% the day after the announcement. According to reports, the court stated, "The decision to pause group activities is extremely sensitive information." It added, "This crime undermines the fairness of the capital market and warrants strong public condemnation.' HYBE, which launched a special task force in September 2023 to combat such breaches, said in a statement, "We will respond firmly and hold those responsible fully accountable, with zero tolerance and without offering any settlements or leniency, for the criminal act of commercializing and trading artists' personal information."

K-pop star, who begged on streets and fled North Korea, makes history as first defector to lead a boyband
Coming from a place where staying alive was the only luxury, North Korea-born rapper Hyuk is now one of the first two defectors to break into the K-pop scene, alongside fellow member Seok. As the leader of the new boy group 1Verse, Hyuk didn't grow up in the spotlight, his journey is the real kind of rags to riches, the kind surrounded with fear, scams, and nights spent wondering if he'd live to see the next day. No safety, no future, no money just survival. From factory shifts to center stage under Seoul's blinding lights, Hyuk's journey is both inspiring and heartbreaking. In 2013, when he was just 12, Hyuk escaped the country where his early years were spent in extreme poverty. As per Korea JoongAng Daily, he begged on the streets to survive. 'Where I lived, we had to collect firewood just to cook rice and survive day by day, it was essential,' he said during the press conference in southern Seoul on Friday—just ahead of the group's first single release. He revealed that he didn't have enough access to music to even consider pursuing it as a career. 'Since I lived struggling every day, I lived so busily that I wonder if I even had time to listen to music, I didn't have that luxury.' Even after debuting, Hyuk said his dream 'has always been to live like a human being.' That same need drove him to write a track called 'Ordinary Person,' which he first uploaded to YouTube in 2024. The lyrics were based on his life and struggles. Now, that same song has finally been performed live, this time with his bandmates by his side. 'With members from different countries all coming together as 1Verse, I just thought, 'We can do this regardless of background,'' said Aito, the group's youngest member from Japan, in an interview with AP. Also read: Ahn Hyo Seop reveals how 'senior' Lee Min Ho treated him on Omniscient Reader set: 'I've admired him for years, he made me feel…' 1Verse is made up of five members: Hyuk and Seok, both North Korean defectors, Nathan from Arkansas, Kenny from Los Angeles, and Aito from Japan. The quintet trained under Singing Beetle, a label launched by former SM Entertainment exec Michelle Cho. This is the company's first group, and the name shows how every member brings their own story, their own verse, coming together to form one universe. Hyuk's road to stardom began in South Korea, working factory shifts just to get by. He even saved up enough to try for university, but COVID shattered that dream. 'It was when COVID was pretty severe, and a bad incident happened, so I had no choice but to work at a factory,' he said. Somewhere in that grind, he crossed paths with a music label CEO, someone who saw potential in him. He offered him training. At first, Hyuk thought it was a scam. But then he recalled thinking: 'I really have nothing right now. Even if you rob me, not even dust would come out.' But the CEO kept showing up, bought him meals and pushed him to believe. After a year of back-and-forth and building trust, Hyuk officially joined the label in late 2021. Also read: ILLIT drags BTS, Jennie, and aespa to refute Min Hee Jin's accusations of copying NewJeans Now, he says it feels like he finally belongs thanks to the members and their fans. Their fandom is called 5tarz, and the members say they already feel the support. 'I'm very grateful that people are paying attention to us. I think it's okay as long as it doesn't lean too much to one side … it's not just me but all our members are here too, it's a journey we're creating together,' he said.

Inspiring story of 'K-Pop Demon Hunters' rising star EJAE; reveals how she landed lead role in director Maggie Kang's blockbuster
EJAE, Veteran actor Shin Young-kyun The world of K-pop and animation just got a lot more interesting! The smash hit animated series " K-pop Demon Hunters " has been breaking records, and now we've discovered something absolutely mind-blowing about its star performer. The series follows three K-pop superstars - Lumi, Mira, and Joy - who secretly battle demons when they're not busy being global sensations. It's like if your favorite girl group also happened to be supernatural warriors (which, let's be honest, explains a lot about how they manage those crazy schedules). Since its release last month, it's been sitting pretty at number one on streaming platforms worldwide. Voice That Conquered the Billboard Here's where it gets really exciting for all you music lovers out there. The main theme song "Golden" by the fictional group Huntrix has climbed all the way to number 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. That's not just impressive - that's absolutely insane for an animated series soundtrack! But here's the kicker - the person behind this chart-topping magic is EJAE, a composer-singer who not only performed the track but also wrote it. The path to this success wasn't exactly smooth sailing though. EJAE spent nearly a decade as a trainee at SM Entertainment, one of Korea's biggest agencies, but unfortunately never made it to debut. Instead of giving up (which honestly, many of us would have), she pivoted and headed to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts to study music industry and psychology. Talk about turning a setback into a comeback! Family Legacy Meets Modern Success Now here's where this story gets absolutely fascinating. Turns out, EJAE (whose real name is Kim Eun-jae) is the granddaughter of legendary Korean actor Shin Young-kyun . He starred in classics like " Red Muffler " and "Hate Once Again," films that defined an entire generation of Korean moviegoers. But wait, it gets even more impressive. This isn't just any regular celebrity grandfather - Shin Young-kyun is known for his incredible philanthropy. We're talking about someone who donated around ₹400 crores (500 billion won) worth of theaters and cultural facilities to the film industry, plus another ₹80 crores (100 billion won) in land to Seoul National University. Back in 2011, when EJAE was just 19 and studying in New York, she appeared on a Korean morning show with her grandfather. Even then, Shin Young-kyun was incredibly supportive, saying his granddaughter had real talent for music and would definitely make it big someday. Thirteen years later, his prediction has come true in the most spectacular way possible! The Magic Behind the Music What makes this story even more beautiful is how EJAE's journey mirrors so many of our own experiences. She started as a trainee with big dreams, faced rejection, adapted by getting proper education abroad, and slowly built her reputation by working with major K-pop acts like Red Velvet , aespa, TWICE, and NewJeans. It's like watching someone methodically build their empire, one song at a time. The really cool part? She originally joined "K-pop Demon Hunters" just as a composer, but director Maggie Kang was so blown away by her demo vocals that she immediately cast her as the voice of main character Lumi. Sometimes the universe just has perfect timing, doesn't it?
