Chery Tiggo Cross CSH HEV is one of Mzani's most affordable hybrids
Available in Comfort and Elite grades, this frugal compact SUV is powered by a 71kW/118Nm 1.5 l four-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor juiced by a lightweight 1.83kWh battery pack. Combined output is 150kW and 310Nm of torque.
This is sent to the front axle via Chery's dedicated hybrid transmission. The result is efficient performance, the carmaker claiming the Tiggo Cross CSH HEV sips 5.4 l /100km.
Bolstered by an automatic start-stop system, this intelligent powertrain features four user-selectable operating modes: Pure Electric, Series Hybrid, Parallel Hybrid and Energy Recovery. During urban low-speed cruising, Chery says the system prioritises pure electric mode to eliminate fuel consumption during vehicle acceleration from standstill.
Cosmetically, the Comfort and Elite hybrid models ride on 17" alloy wheels. They also feature automatic LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, a sporty tailgate spoiler, chrome-plated dual exhaust finishers and body-coloured exterior finishes. The Elite variant benefits from sporty red-painted brake calipers and an electric sunroof.
Standard interior amenities on both variants include black leather upholstery, ambient lighting, automatic wipers, two-zone automatic climate control and wireless charging. There's also a pair of 10.25" screens: one serving as a digital instrument cluster and the other an infotainment hub offering Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration and a reverse camera with dynamic guidelines for easier manoeuvring in tight urban areas.
The flagship Elite derivative is packed with extra niceties including a six-speaker sound system, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, heated front seats for chilly winter mornings and a power-adjustable driver's seat with power-operated lumbar support.
Both hybrid models feature a host of standard safety features: traction control, emergency brake assist, hill descent control, brake assist and dual front, front side and side curtain airbags. The Elite variant adds a front inter-seat airbag plus a host of additional driver assistance features. Some of these are adaptive cruise control, a 360° camera, lane change assistance, blind spot detection and intelligent high beam control.
Pricing for the Tiggo Cross CSH HEV starts at R439,900 for the Comfort and R469,900 for the Elite variant. This includes a five-year/150,000km warranty, five year/60,000km service plan and 10-year/unlimited mileage battery warranty for the first owner.

Another Chinese car brand is set to compete for a slice of the action in South Africa's hotly contested car market, and it goes by the name of Lepas. Although it is a newly launched brand, Lepas forms part of the Chery stable, and it will aim to expand its parent company's presence in the premium segment. The automaker has confirmed that the Lepas brand will be launched in South Africa in 2026, spearheaded by the L8 flagship SUV that was revealed at the 2025 Chery Business Conference in Wuhu, China, in late April. Although the full South African line-up has yet to be confirmed, the L8 is likely to be joined by the smaller L6 and L4 models that were also previewed at the Wuhu event. The Chinese carmaker has launched a massive price offensive on the Toyota Corolla Cross, the best-selling new energy vehicle in South Africa by a country mile. The Tiggo Cross self-charging hybrid is now on sale from R439 900, which is R54 500 less than the most affordable Corolla Cross HEV in Xs guise at R494 400. Even the top spec Chery Tiggo Cross hybrid in Elite guise at R469 900 is still R24 500 cheaper than the Xs hybrid. The PHEV is not only more frugal than the standard C9, but also a lot faster. Add to that all the luxurious bells and whistles and comprehensive safety systems and the Omoda C9 PHEV offers a bang for you buck package. The Citizen Motoring looks at six key features of this SUV. Impressive performance and fuel economy The Omoda C9 PHEV combines the convenience of a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with the efficiency of electric power to produce an incredible 400kW of power and 915Nm of torque. This in turn translates into a claimed 0-100 km/h time of just 4.9 seconds and a combined fuel consumption figure of a mere 1.4-litres per 100km. Omoda C9 PHEV charging and range The 34.5kWh battery pack can be recharged in 5.5 hours when connected to a home charging wall box. Or even quicker thanks to its 70kW fast-charging capability, where the battery can be charged from 30-80% in 25 minutes when plugged into a DC public fast charger. With a WLTP-estimated all-electric range of 150km, the Omoda C9 PHEV provides one of the highest all-electric range figures of any plug-in hybrid vehicle currently sold in South Africa. There are no add on cost options to tick. You get heated and electrically adjustable Nappa leather seats in the front and the rear. Plus, a heated and electrically adjustable steering wheel, also trimmed in Nappa leather. Dual-zone climate control that offers passengers in the rear their own air-conditioning control panel. The dash reveals dual 12.3-inch screens, one being the digital cluster, and the other the infotainment and control display. This screen provides access to various vehicle functions, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and Intelligent Voice Command. A 12-speaker Sony sound system, wireless charging pad, and multi-colour ambient lighting adds to the cabin's ambience. A panoramic glass sunroof said to bath the cabin in natural light rounds out just some of the premium features. It offers driver aids such as Adaptive Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking and Driver Fatigue Monitoring. Passive safety features include dual front, front side, side curtain, driver knee, and bolster airbags, while ISOFIX child seat anchorages ensure that passengers, whether infants or adults, are kept safe while travelling. A head-up display means the driver never needs to take their eyes off the road. Added to this is a 10-year/200 000km warranty for certain electric drive unit components and a 10-year/unlimited km power battery pack warranty for the first owner, reverting to 10-year/200 000km for subsequent owners. Buyers also receive seven years of roadside assistance, offering added peace of mind and enhanced ownership value.
