Malcolm X College students take trip of a lifetime in study abroad program visit to Africa
The students in the study abroad program said it helped them stay focused on their studies and learn more about themselves.
It was the trip of a lifetime for Courtney Beckford-Onar; leaving Chicago and taking a nearly 13-hour flight to Ghana.
"It wasn't just a vacation, not at all. It was very spiritual," he said.
Malcolm X College President David Sanders started the study abroad program nearly two years ago. The idea came from students in their Black male mentoring program.
"They really said they didn't know who they were; that society was every day giving them a different version of their identity," he said.
Back when the mentoring program began, the retention rate for Black men finishing college was 53%, and Sanders decided to shift gears.
"We took 20 of our educators that looked like them and took two students and partnered them with those educators," he said.
Sanders said, at the end of the semester, the retention rate was 93%.
He presented that research to U.S. Rep. Danny Davis (D-Illinois), and the school received a congressional earmark of $1 million that can be used to give students a free trip that can help them learn more about themselves. This past February, it was a trip for 20 students to Africa.
"We don't have to worry about anything. We just actually just need to show up, you know? And it was a blessing, and I'm grateful," Beckford-Onar said.
For Joseph Rice, it was his first time getting a passport and flying out of the country.
"I was never thinking I would be in line at 20, 22, 23 years old getting a passport to go to Africa," he said.
While the program was initially geared toward Black men, they've expanded it to everyone.
"It changed me to not procrastinate, to not give up on what I want to do, and just to keep going," Donisha Stewart said.
Rice is one of many students who will graduate this weekend. More than 1,000 City Colleges of Chicago students will walk across the stage inside Wintrust Arena on Saturday. Sanders said he hopes the study abroad program will inspire more students to fulfill their dreams.
Sanders said the next group of students will travel to Portugal in June.

Danny Davis to announce he won't seek House reelection
Democratic Rep. Danny Davis of Illinois is expected to announce Thursday he won't run for reelection in 2026, according to two people granted anonymity to discuss his plans in advance. Davis — at 83, one of the oldest members of Congress — plans a news conference Thursday morning where he is also likely to make an endorsement for what is expected to be a highly competitive race. The 15-term lawmaker represents downtown Chicago, its growing West Side and some western suburbs. He is known as a champion of civil rights, affordable housing, prison reentry and health care issues — as well as having a sonorous voice and calm demeanor. While the deep-blue district has long been considered a Black seat — it includes a portion of Chicago's South Side, the traditional heart of the city's African American population — that population has declined due in part to gentrification. While African Americans still have a 42 percent plurality, the white, Latino and Asian populations are fast-growing. State Rep. La Shawn Ford has already announced he's running and is expected to get an endorsement from Davis. Others who have announced they're running include former County Commissioner Richard Boykin, businessman Jason Friedman and Marine Corps officer turned comedian John McCombs. Walter Burnett Jr., who until recently was a Chicago alderman, and state Rep. Kam Buckner are among many other potential candidates expected to enter the race. Davis' announcement adds to an already unusually turbulent 2026 congressional landscape in Illinois. Four of the state's 17 House districts are poised to be open seats, with two Democratic incumbents — Reps. Robin Kelly and Raja Krishnamoorthi — running for the Senate seat being vacated by Dick Durbin. Davis serves on the House Ways and Means Committee and has served in leadership roles in the Congressional Black Caucus. Before he was elected to Congress, he served as a Chicago alderman and a Cook County commissioner.

Sanders rips Netanyahu: ‘Disgusting liar'
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) slammed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for denying the food crisis in Gaza. 'He is a disgusting liar,' Sanders said Tuesday night during an appearance on CNN's 'The Source with Kaitlan Collins.' 'Israel had a right to defend itself from the terrible Hamas attack. But I think everybody understands that in the last [one] and a half years, they have been waging a brutal, horrific, almost unprecedented type of war, not just against Hamas, but against the Palestinian people,' the Vermont senator added. On Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said they would resume aid airdrops in the Gaza Strip. Israel has been accused by a UN official, among others, of blocking aid into the region. The IDF denied reports of starvation as a 'false campaign by the Hamas terrorist organization.' However, Sanders said hundreds of thousands are suffering at the hands of the Israeli government. 'They have virtually completely destroyed the entire infrastructure of Gaza, virtually all of the schools, the health care system, over 70 percent of the housing, the water system. And now, as you mentioned, over the last period of time, they have prevented humanitarian aid coming in,' Sanders told Collins. 'And there is now mass malnutrition and children are starving to death,' he added. In response to the crisis, Sanders said he would introduce a joint resolution on Wednesday to condemn U.S. arms sales to Israel. 'We cannot continue to provide military aid to the extremist, racist, Netanyahu government that is starving the children of Gaza,' Sanders said. Sanders also slammed the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) for promoting false narratives about the crisis in Gaza. 'So you have a super PAC called AIPAC that spends hundreds of millions of dollars trying to defend the Netanyahu government. And if you vote for a Sanders resolution or you stand up in other ways in opposition to Netanyahu, they're prepared to fund a whole lot of money against you,' the senator said. 'But I think the time is now when members of the Senate have gotta start listening to their constituents back home, and the American people do not want to spend billions and billions of dollars supporting this horrific war.'
