KE says accelerating captive-to-grid shift

KARACHI: K-Electric (KE) is actively facilitating Karachi's manufacturing sector to make a smooth shift to the electricity grid, an action that comes in tandem with the government's policy move to encourage industries' switch from captive power plants.
Under this banner, KE is holding 'Open House' sessions – specifically designed for industrial customers – in collaboration with trade associations since May this year. The weekly sessions bring together KE's supply business, commercial, technical, and planning teams to engage directly with industry stakeholders in order to support smooth transition from their in-house generation to KE's supply. A priority during this 'one-window KE facility' of a weekly open-house is also to address as promptly as possible any concerns that the customers may have. Customized packages based on actual load requirements, tariff assessments, and infrastructure feasibility are also being provided.
KE CEO Moonis Alvi said: 'KE is actively playing its part in helping how power is delivered to Pakistan's industrial backbone. By moving away from fragmented captive generation and toward a unified, reliable grid, we are not only improving operational efficiency for industries but also contributing to national energy optimization.'

Balancing the books and the battlefield: Pakistan's fiscal strategy for FY2025–26—III

With an eye on long-term innovation, Rs?79?billion is dedicated to the IT sector. Major developments include the Karachi IT Park, Islamabad Technology Park, and a national freelancing platform. The government also aims to scale up IT exports, which have already grown 21 percent year-on-year. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will benefit from increased access to low-cost financing and enhanced risk coverage. Over Rs 300 billion has already been disbursed to 95,000 businesses, with the government planning to double this outreach through new policy tools and financial instruments. Remittances—Pakistan's most stable source of foreign exchange—rose to USD 38.3 billion last year, a remarkable 27 percent year-on-year increase. Enhanced services for overseas Pakistanis, such as secure digital transfers, diaspora awards, and legal protections, are helping cement trust and sustain these vital inflows. These remittances serve as a bulwark against external imbalances and are instrumental in maintaining the State Bank's foreign exchange reserves, which currently stand at a reassuring USD?14 billion. The export target for FY2025–26 is set at USD 35.3 billion—a 7.4 percent increase—while imports are expected to grow to USD?65.2?billion. This will result in a trade deficit of nearly USD 30 billion, which the government plans to offset through robust remittance inflows and foreign direct investment. Exporters, especially in textiles, IT, and rice, will benefit from zero-rated tax regimes, tariff rationalization, and simplified refund systems. A newly proposed Tariff Reform Package aims to reduce maximum duty rates to 15 percent within four years, enhancing global competitiveness and easing the burden on domestic producers. Finance bill: FCCI says will protest against ‘black laws'

FAISALABAD: 'The Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry has decided to strongly protest against the black laws included in the Finance Bill 2025-26, however, the future course of action will be decided in consultation with business organisations.' This was stated by Acting President of Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry Qaiser Shams Gucha while addressing at a press conference after a joint meeting of business organisations recently. He said that Karachi, Lahore and Sialkot chambers have decided to go on strike on July 19 against 5 important provisions. We are against the provisions of A-37 and B-37 giving powers of arrest to the FBR and other serious punishments for the unity of the business community, but the final decision on the strike will be taken in consultation with local business organisations. He said that there is no discrimination between industrialists and traders as the new law will be equally applicable to the entire business community. He said that Karachi, Lahore and Sialkot Chambers have mentioned only five very serious provisions while dangerous provisions for arrest of owners are also being included in the proposed provincial labor laws and they will also demand their return among their demands during the protest. He said that the business community's reaction against the budget has reached the government and it is expected that the government will reconsider the demands of the business community, due to which there will be no need for a strike on July 19. They said that if their legitimate demands are not accepted, there will be a full-scale protest, the center of which will be the Ghanta Ghar Chowk in Faisalabad. Where there will be a joint protest by all organisations. They further said that we are with all the chambers of Pakistan and if the government does not accept our demands, we will go on a full-scale strike. However, he urged the government to immediately acknowledge the legitimate demands of the traders and industrialists so that the economy can continue to improve. He thanked the journalists for their cooperation and said that he would play his full role in conveying the legitimate demands of the business community to the higher authorities. Finally, Vice President Shahid Mumtaz Bajwa thanked the journalists. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
