Bengaluru: South Indian actress B Saroja Devi -- known as a doe-eyed beauty with a lasting screen presence in four languages – passed away in Bengaluru Monday. She was 87.
Saroja Devi began her acting career at 17 with Kannada film 'Mahakavi Kalidasa' as a co-star of cinema pioneer Honnappa Bhagavathar in 1955.
She quickly rose to fame with performances in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films, starring alongside legends Dr Rajkumar, MG Ramachandran, Gemini Ganesan, Sivaji Ganesan, NT Rama Rao, Dilip Kumar, Sunil Dutt and Shammi Kapoor.
She earned the epithet, 'Chaturbhasha Taare' (a star of four languages).
The third daughter of Bhairappa, a police officer, and Rudramma, the girl from Channapatna (a town 60km from Bengaluru) would carve a larger-than-life image in the film industry for many decades.
She would eventually be crowned "the first female superstar of Kannada cinema".

In Kannada, her portrayal of 'Kittooru Rani Chennamma' was widely acclaimed. It was a film with MGR -- 'Nadodi Mannan' (1958), the first film for the duo -- that catapulted Saroja Devi to superstardom in Tamil film industry.
The actress is survived by son Gautam Ramachandra (named after MGR) and daughter Indira (named after Indira Gandhi).

The Coimbatore district administration, School Education Department, and the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association will organise the ninth edition of Coimbatore Book Festival at the CodissiaA Trade Fair Complex from July 18 to 27. The fair, which will be spread over three halls at the Trade Fair Complex, will have publishers from nearly 10 States, including Maharashtra, Haryana, Assam and New Delhi. More than 170 exhibitors will display books in over 320 stalls. The organisers have planned special programmes in the evenings. On July 18, 'Young Writers' Award' will be presented to three literary personalities - Award for Fiction (Alaiyathi Senthil), Award for Non - Fiction (Venba), and Award for Poetry (S. Priya). Poet Thangam Moorthi will felicitate the winners. There will be competitions for students in Tamil and English, debates, and talks during the exhibition days. Further, the 10-day expo will include book releases, narration of short stories, screening of short films, and poetry workshop. Coimbatore MP P. Rajkumar will inaugurate the fair on July 18 at 6 p.m. and it will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Visitors can register online by logging on to or scan the QR code at the venue, said a press release.

This was addressed by Kanagaraj himself in an interview speaking with The Hollywood Reporter India, Kanagaraj pointed out the success of his previous film, the Thalapathy Vijay-starrer 'Leo', which amassed over Rs 600 crore worldwide. Discussing his remuneration, he said, 'You might ask me about my Rs 50 crore remuneration, but it stems from the fact that my last film, 'Leo', did very well at the box office and collected in the range of Rs 600 crore.'Prior to this, when asked about his remuneration, Lokesh said, 'Obviously, since I pay my taxes I can say, the sacrifice of two years – 36 and 37 – comes under this. Nothing comes easily to us. We need to sacrifice.' He further added, 'I wouldn't call it a sacrifice, I'm very excited about the film and if it turns out to be a success I'll take the fame and money, which will help my family and friends. There aren't any complaints, I just mentioned the age because when you turn back and see, I've missed so many events with my family and friends, and in that context I mentioned.' Nagarjuna Akkineni, one of the stars in 'Coolie', recently shared details about his antagonist role. 'This was a fun experience because of how different it is from what I've done so far. Being the main antagonist, I had many scenes with Rajinikanth sir... It's him against me,' he revealed, expressing his excitement over the unique eagerly await the release of the 'Coolie' trailer, which Kanagaraj has confirmed will be unveiled on August 2. He mentioned, 'I want to deliver one trailer and then the film. More than that, anything will be a giveaway.
