How US amusement parks are battling the costs of Trump's tariffs this summer

The ripple effects of trade disputes between global economic giants like the US and China are being felt in unexpected places, including local amusement parks.
Families seeking affordable summer getaways often choose regional parks over larger destinations like Disney World, favouring the convenience of a drive over costly flights.
However, economic uncertainty fuelled by tariffs could deter these visits altogether.
Park owners face increased costs due to tariffs on imported steel used in ride construction.
Even the prizes and toys won in games often come from China and are subject to tariffs.
Despite these challenges, regional amusement parks have not experienced a downturn so far this year.
'We've had good crowds, and everyone seems excited to be here,' said Brian Hartley, vice president of Playland's Castaway Cove, in Ocean City, New Jersey, which boasts 30 rides, miniature golf, go-karts, and other beachfront attractions. 'As long as the weather is good, they're ready to come down.'
That's true for park-goer Chris Del Borrello, at Castaway Cove on a bustling June Friday evening with a group of 10 family members, including his four children.
'We come here every year because it's so fun, and we build memories every single summer,' he said.
Tariffs loom over the summer tourism industry just as leisure travel is expected to finally get back to pre-pandemic levels.
The US Travel Association expects Americans to take 1.96 billion trips this year, up two per cent from 1.92 billion last year. Travel spending is also expected to increase two per cent year over year.
Tariff pressures
As park operators prepared for the 2025 summer last year, President Donald Trump imposed on-again, off-again tariffs against US trade partners that made planning difficult.
For instance, proposed tariffs against China started at 10 per cent in February, rose to 20 per cent in March, ballooned to 145 per cent in April, and were reduced to 30 per cent in May.
On Wednesday, the Trump administration put the number at 55 per cent.
Hartley said he ordered items like stuffed animals for games from China early to beat the tariffs – and benefited from the pause announced in May.
'We loaded up, we're tripping over stuff at this point,' he said. 'We tried to purchase as much stuff as we could to be ready for the season, because that little bit makes a big difference in the bottom line at the end of the day,' he said.
In particular, the park added two new rides this year, but parts were delivered back in the fall.
Not all parks were as fortunate. At Adventureland, in Farmingdale, New York, the steel structure for a new ride, Wave Twister, and some China-made game prizes like plush toys and basketballs were affected by tariff costs, said manager Jeanine Gentile.
'We ordered them months ago before the tariffs were in place, but they typically arrive for delivery at this time of the year, and so obviously the tariffs were in before we received the product,' she said. 'We did have to pay additional for those tariffs in order to get the product.'
So far, the park is absorbing the cost – they made the decision not to raise ticket prices this year. But that could change next year.
'We've just sort of felt that if we can do this (not raise prices) for Long Island and for our guests, let's do it, where we can afford it, at least for this season,' said Gentile.
Economic uncertainty
Aside from tariffs, economic uncertainty is the biggest challenge for amusement parks this season.
At Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, which is co-owned by country legend Dolly Parton and Herschend Family Entertainment, Director of Communications Pete Owens said they decided to open a week later in March due to concerns about the economy.
But so far, attendance at the park, nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains, is up four per cent from last year. Attendees are spending but looking for deals.
A promotion giving discount tickets to public employees has proved popular. And Owens is seeing customers purchase tickets for their family closer to their actual visit instead of several days or weeks in advance. Some are even waiting until they're in the Great Smoky Mountains to decide to buy a ticket.
'I think they're all still looking very closely to see what value pricing there is or what opportunities there are,' he said.
The same holds true at Silver Dollar City near Branson, Missouri, an 1880s Western-themed park, which draws its visitors from what President Brad Thomas calls 'America's heartland,' an 'oval' in the middle of the country, including Minneapolis, Denver and Memphis and Houston, Texas.
'What those families tend to say as they visit us is that they want their families just to escape, even though there's a lot of concerns in every family's life, they're all dealing with time pressure and money pressure and inflation pressure and all kinds of other things,' said Thomas.
He said this year, families coming to the park are sticking to a budget-conscious plan.
'They have carved the money that they'll spend in their day with us or their days with us,' he said. 'They've planned that into their budget.'
Back at Castaway Cove, Hartley said that while the season is going well, he worries about the mood of the consumer as economic uncertainty persists. That could affect trip planning later in the summer.
' People that really haven't already booked a vacation … it may affect, do they come down here for a weekend? Do they not? Do they come for two days instead of four or five days?' he said. 'I think people don't know what the future is going to hold.'

More than 50 people stood frozen on a hillside with binoculars and high-powered cameras in hand to witness a very large bear from afar. But one tourist suddenly came face-to-face with the beast - and in a split-second decision, hurled himself through his car window, narrowly escaping unscathed. 'When the bear emerged from the trees, it was right in line with his taillights,' Molly Hagan told Cowboy State Daily. 'He did not hear the crowd yelling at him to get in his car.' 'He dove into his car window and tucked his feet just as the bear came around the driver's side and crossed the street,' she added. On June 3, Hagan, social media coordinator for Backcountry Safaris Jackson Hole, was spending the day in Grand Teton. But while on the road, she witnessed a saturation of vehicles - all stopped and lining the road - in what she immediately recognized as an 'animal jam.' 'With the level of traffic present, and having already seen plenty of elk that day, I figured it had to be a bear,' Hagan told Cowboy State Daily. Spotting nearly five dozen people gathered on a hillside, using scopes and high-powered cameras to peer across the road, Hagan pulled over and got her camera ready to capture whatever had everyone on edge. Assuming the wildlife was far off, she wandered to a better vantage point - but saw nothing in the open field. It wasn't until Hagan hurried toward the growing crowd that she realized what had captured everyone's full attention. 'When I finally got to the crowd, I saw what they did: A huge grizzly, standing 10 feet off the left-hand side of the road,' Hagan told the outlet. 'And it was on the move.' But this wasn't just a charming, nature-documentary-style bear sighting - this bear, it was later discovered, was on a mission: to mate with an awaiting bear in a picturesque meadow just across the road. With her background in wildlife, Hagan quickly recognized the potential danger and put distance between herself and the bear, weaving her way to the back of the crowd. At the same moment, wildlife guides recognized that the huffing, puffing bear could strike at any moment - and swiftly sprang into action. 'Three wildlife guides, all armed with bear spray, put themselves between the bear and the crowd,' Hagan told Cowboy State Daily. 'The bear was huffing, looked at the crowd multiple times, but stayed at least 10 feet off the road,' she added. However, curiosity seemed to get the best of those stuck in the animal-related jam, as they began stepping out of their cars - unaware that the bear was close enough to strike at any moment. 'At this point, the wildlife guides were yelling, telling everyone to stay in their vehicle,' Hagan explained to the outlet. 'The bear continued north, and the crowd slowly moved south.' But urgent warnings from tour guides didn't seem to register with everyone - including one unsuspecting tourist who stepped out of their vehicle just as the bear briefly disappeared behind two trees along the road. The bear reemerged from behind the trees in an instant - right in line with the unidentified tourist's taillights - and began moving toward the passenger door. Unaware of the danger creeping up behind him and the frantic screams urging him back, he fully stepped out of the car, closing the driver's side door just as the huffing bear drew nearer. Just seconds later, he spotted the bear and realized the danger he'd naively walked into. His first instinct: get back inside the car. But the door was locked. His next move was to dive for his life through the open window of his black Kia, bearing Florida license plates - a heart-stopping moment perfectly captured by Hagan. In the photo, the tourist's peril is unmistakable: his outstretched legs, caught mid-jump and fully sideways, hang out of the open driver's side window. Just feet away, the muscular, huffing grizzly stalked closer - but fortunately, it showed little interest in the tourist's dangling feet and continued its intimidating march across the road. Thankfully, both bear and man escaped unscathed - the man safely back in his car, and the bear free to continue its journey to join in on Grand Teton's peak mating season. 'The photos tell the story better than any words can,' Hagan told Cowboy State Daily. While exploring Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, the National Park Service urges visitors to maintain a safe distance of at least 100 yards from bears roaming the natural surroundings. Most rangers and ecologists in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem agree that bear spray is essential for anyone traveling in grizzly country, according to the outlet. If you unexpectedly come face-to-face with a grizzly at close range, the best course of action is to 'play dead' - though the safest defense is to avoid these furry bears altogether. 'The best tool you have is your own situational awareness and both mental and physical preparedness when in grizzly bear occupied areas,' Dan Thompson, bear expert and large carnivore biologist with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, previously told Cowboy State Daily. 'The reason we promote the use of bear spray is that it's been shown time and again to effectively stop a bear attack,' he added.

'For our littler fans, it means they can stack and unstack our cups into a pyramid without them sticking together,' the company said on an FAQ page. The red Solo cup - synonymous with American party culture and found at nearly every US grocery store - went through an identity change Users discovered that the indented lines were great for finding the right amount of water to put in rice or estimating the proper amount of mouthwash. Hulseman passed away in 2016 at the age of 84. While his cups remained a common sight at alcohol-fueled parties, Hulseman was known as deeply religious and liked to pen poems to God. WASHINGTON, June 28 (Reuters) - The latest version of the Senate's massive budget bill that the Senate is racing through for a vote as soon as Saturday deals a fatal blow to the use of tax credits in place since 2005 to spur more wind and solar energy and would set a new tax on those projects for the first time, renewable energy proponents said on Saturday. Despite hopes earlier in the week that the Senate would rework the budget megabill's language about the future use of Inflation Reduction Act tax credits to extend their use and make them more usable, the new version of the bill introduced by Senate leadership overnight will effectively repeal the incentives for solar and wind immediately. Instead, it imposes a new tax on wind and solar projects completed after Dec. 31, 2027 if they cannot prove they have not used any Chinese components, while offering a new tax break for coal production. It also accelerates the phase-out of clean energy manufacturing tax credits that have attracted billions in investments throughout the US, especially in Republican states. The clean energy industry and environmental groups decried the last-minute changes to the bill, saying that it will raise household energy costs and deprive the US of new, necessary and fast electricity capacity at a time of massive power demand amid a rush of construction of power-hungry data centers to power AI development. Trump's former advisor and head of DOGE Elon Musk blasted the bill on his social media platform X on Saturday, warning that the bill will "destroy millions of jobs in America" and cause "strategic harm." "It is utterly insane and destructive. It gives handouts to industries of the past while severely damaging industries of the future," he said. Energy security organization SAFE said in a statement that the bill, as written, would give an advantage to China, which dominates the clean energy and electric vehicle industries and is racing to outpace the US in AI development by taking away financing for energy storage, mineral processing and power projects.
