Young people urged to stop exploring abandoned buildings as part of 'dangerous' TikTok trend

ITV News03-06-2025
A social media challenge is 'putting lives at risk', according to the police.
The trend, known as 'Urban Ex', involves TikTok users sharing videos of themselves venturing into historic structures.
However, entering these buildings can be dangerous, with concerns that young people are taking risks to chase popularity and views online.
In Jersey, groups have filmed inside the derelict St Saviour's Hospital, the War Tunnels, and on top of Fort Regent.
Chief Inspector Craig Jackson from the States of Jersey Police said: "The buildings can be structurally unsafe and full of hazards that put the lives of those entering them at risk, not to mention those of the emergency services who will be called if they get into trouble."
The island's Infrastructure Minister, Connétable Andy Jehan, fears that young people could get seriously injured by exploring these places unsupervised and without safety equipment.
He said: "We're really concerned that some of them may get themselves hurt.
"We can see that more and more youngsters seem to be doing this and show their friends what they're doing, often in dangerous places where we've got buildings that are closed.
"They're closed for a reason and we would urge people to adhere to that notice."
The minister added that these buildings can include dangers such as fall hazards and asbestos.
ITV News spoke to some of the TikTok users creating and sharing these videos.
They argue that their content should be celebrated as they offer a snapshot of locations that would otherwise be undocumented.
The minister admitted that what the social media users are doing is not illegal in Jersey as the island has no trespass law.
However, he added: "There's a reason people enter these places with a hard hat and boots and we'd urge people to err on the side of caution.
"We've all been young and we've all done things we wish we probably hadn't done. What we're saying is that now we know far more perhaps than we did when I was a youth, it's not safe. Therefore, I would urge people not to do it.
"There are plenty of things that young people and old people alike can do around the island to get an adrenaline kick.
"Going into old building sites is not one of them."

EXCLUSIVE Grinning small boat migrant chronicles his journey across the Channel to the UK - as he films himself celebrating on Blackpool beach after illegally crossing into Britain

A small boat migrant who was helped across the Channel by the French authorities is documenting his 'best life' in Britain on TikTok. Shocking footage filmed by the migrant and posted on the social media platform showed him on a small boat with around 20 other men being given bottles of water by the French coastguard. The group of around 30 men cheer, wave and hold out their hands in thanks to the French boat which travels right next to them to hand over the water. Despite crossings being against the law - and often deadly - the coastguard made no attempt to stop the boat or urge them to return. It was posted on the TikTok of an account of a man, believed to be from Iraq, called Youssef Hassan. He has more than 5,000 followers. The footage of the crossing was posted this week and clearly shows him holding his phone in a selfie position. Another video sees him on the same small boat talking to the camera with people on the boat with him. Young children can be seen in the centre of the boat. His TikTok now shows him enjoying living in Blackpool, Lancashire. The social media giant has been accused of being an 'online travel agent for illegal crossings'. His profile has the phrase: 'I live in peace and I post videos that I shoot for myself and for my personal page. Greetings to everyone.' He has posted numerous videos of him enjoying his time in the Lancashire town, including the iconic Blackpool Tower. He is believed to have travelled through Germany for the boat crossing. He posted videos of him last month in the country. Videos from Blackpool started this month, and include shots of him outside an amusement arcade. One follower urged him to return to Iraq and wrote: 'Go back to your family, living abroad is hard. There is nothing better than Iraq, I swear.' But others wished him well, writing: 'May God protect you, my dear Youssef. Congratulations on your arrival in Britain. God willing your dreams will come true. May God ease your mind and your future. You deserve all the best, my brother.' The migrant was with a group of around 30 men seen cheering, waving and holding out their hands in thanks to the French boat which travels right next to them to hand over the water He replied: 'You are my soul.' Other clips show him outside the Coral Island children's amusement centre in Blackpool. Each has thousands of views. On the clip featuring him on the boat, some followers question how easy and safe it is to make it to Britain on a small boat. One follower boasted how easy it is. He wrote: 'My brother, you will reach Britain, and Britain does not allow rejection and does not allow deportation. 'The English language and work are all Iraqis and it is the best country and trust.' Another commented him to say: 'May God protect you, my dear Youssef. Congratulations on your arrival in Britain. God willing, your dreams will come true. 'May God ease your mind and your future. You deserve all the best, my brother.' Alp Mehmet, chairman of Migration Watch UK, said: 'TikTok is basically an online travel agent for illegal crossings. How on earth is this allowed? 'It's just an online advert to say come to Britain, it's easy and you'll have a great life. It's very worrying.' One source said: 'It looks like this guy is living his best life here in Britain. It's sticking two fingers up to the authorities. 'Not only was he basically helped to get here, he's now living a very good life.' According to the latest government figures at least 21,000 people have embarked on the perilous journey across the Channel since January, putting 2025 on course to be a record year for crossings. Earlier this month, Keir Starmer announced a new pilot scheme that will see migrants arriving via small boat being detained and returned to France. A one-in, one-out system will operate with migrants sent back to France in exchange for asylum seekers. But the scheme could be canned if it is found to be ineffective. The new scheme has been condemned by campaigners, who said they would support court cases brought by small-boat arrivals chosen to be sent back to France. A border union boss said the legal challenges could take a year. Brussels ominously warned that it was assessing whether the scheme complied with the 'spirit and the letter of the law', while governments including Italy were said to be harbouring 'huge doubts' about its legality. Meanwhile Home Secretary Yvette Cooper refused to say how many of the thousands arriving by dinghy will be removed under the pilot scheme, amid fears it could be even fewer than the 50 a week suggested by French officials. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp told the Mail: 'This pathetic arrangement may be sunk by legal challenges from activist lawyers and irresponsible charities who want to facilitate illegal immigration into the UK. 'With illegal immigration across the Channel so far this year hitting record levels, Keir Starmer must now be bitterly regretting his foolish decision to cancel the Rwanda deterrent scheme before it even started. 'After two years of legal challenges and legislation, the scheme was ready to go, but Starmer cancelled it just days before the first plane was due to take off last July. 'This would have enabled 100 per cent of the illegal immigrants to be immediately removed without judicial interference. 'The boats would soon have stopped. But Starmer is too weak and too mentally enslaved by his human rights lawyer friends to do what is needed to protect our country's borders.' Downing Street insisted the controversial 'one in, one out' agreement was legally sound and that Brussels supported it. But fearing that returned migrants could head to Italy, the country's interior minister told Sky News: 'We know the EU Commission is still evaluating the agreement, and EU countries, including us, have huge doubts about security and legal aspects of the deal.' It has been a decade since a sporadic number of boats with migrants on board arriving off the Kent coast from France was reported in the media. At the time, the focus was mainly on the thousands of attempts by migrants in northern France, who were attempting to stowaway on lorries and ferries to the UK. In the nearby Calais Jungle thousands of people, including children, were living under canvass in a camp which was later cleared by the French authorities. But as security was tightened around the ports and Eurotunnel, within three years, significant numbers were using small boats instead to make the dangerous crossing. The cost for a single small boat journey can cost upwards of £1,500 for a single person with no guarantee that the journey will be a success.

'I lost 112lbs by combining weight loss jabs with one exercise habit'

Brandon, 27, used to eat three takeaways a day and at his heaviest weighed more than 25 stone A man has lost 8 stone - and counting - by combining Mounjaro jabs with one extreme exercise habit. Brandon Gee, 27, weighed 25st 5lbs and almost accepted he'd be dead before he was 30. He wore a size 5XL at his heaviest and would eat three takeaways a day, leaving him unable to walk for more than 15 minutes. ‌ But after some of Brandon's family members died from health-related issues, it kicked him into gear. He initially lost just under 4st by doing 10,000 steps a day, but when he gained some of the weight back, he turned to Mounjaro in January 2025. And by combining it with around 30,000 daily steps, he has managed to shift a further 7st 8lbs. ‌ ‌ Now weighing 15st, he is able to run a 10km and is still losing weight. Brandon, a specialist cleaner from London, said: "It got to the point, where I didn't think I was going to make it to 30 - I'd turned into a hermit. "At what point does the heart just give up? With my life before, I suffered a lot, and I didn't want to leave the house. Not wanting to do anything that involved being seen - it had a massive impact on my mental health. But now I feel a lot different. ‌ "At first I didn't feel different, but the more time has gone on I noticed little things. My anxiety has completely gone and now I want to enjoy myself, go on holiday and do things that I couldn't do before. You feel trapped before but now I feel amazing and being able to spend time with my daughter." Before losing the weight, Brandon struggled so much that he would having breathing problems when lying down. He said: "I ended up becoming really bad with snoring - I would stop breathing in my sleep and that scared me. If I laid down to watch TV my breathing got really heavy. ‌ "You don't notice the weight sometimes. A lot of it stemmed from being home on a laptop with work. Getting comfortable with your habits and lots of takeaways - you don't realise how bad it gets." In just over a year he lost 4st through exercise. But he ended up putting one back on and decided to get some extra help with the Mounjaro jab. He said: "I noticed it straight away. I was sceptical at first, but I took it in the morning, and I couldn't finish my dinner that evening. I was still 22st at that point." ‌ As well as that, Brandon upped his exercise and which he says was key to him getting some confidence back. He added: "I've still had to do 30,000 steps a day and I go to the gym five days a week. I've had a strict diet and people start Mounjaro and expect it to be magic. "At the start my exercise was based around work and I slowly noticed I was having to sit down less. Now I'm doing a 10k which is something I never thought I could do after not being able to walk for 15 minutes. Over that time, it allowed me to go the gym and get my confidence back - I was worried at first." ‌ Throughout his weight loss, Brandon has shared his journey on TikTok in the hopes of inspiring others. He said: "Other people have been motivated by my videos to make a change and I wish I had someone at the time who was honest with me. "People weren't honest and there are so many people nowadays who feel so alone so I want to share my journey. Yes, I use Mounjaro, but I genuinely think it will change so many lives - I think it will be revolutionary. This why I'm such an advocate for helping others is you don't realise how trapped you feel." He started on 2.5mg for two months, went to 5mg for four months and two weeks ago increased to 7.5mg.

I tried going to bed as ugly as possible to wake up more beautiful – my partner thought I was mad but this item worked

Plus, what experts say we should really do at nighttime for a beauty routine OH SHEET I tried going to bed as ugly as possible to wake up more beautiful – my partner thought I was mad but this item worked THEY call it 'beauty sleep,' but let's be honest - just because I've clocked in a solid eight hours doesn't mean I wake up looking fresh-faced. And some days more than others it certainly takes a bit of work on my puffy eyes and messy hair before I look presentable for the world. 10 The rose of the 'morning shed' has taken over TikTok, racking up over 100million in views worldwide Credit: TikTok/@eringett7 10 The idea is that you go to bed after applying multiple beauty products - and 'shed' them off in the morning to have a 'glow up' Credit: TikTok/@@victoriasamson And sometimes there just isn't time for a miracle, if I'm rushing to work or I'm late out the house. But could TikTokers have the ultimate clever solution to help my predicament? One of the booming beauty trends that has over 100million views is the 'morning shed' - and it looks baffling from first glance. The #morningshed trend is about maximising beauty sleep by applying multiple beauty products before bed, then "shedding" them in the morning to reveal a fresher, more flawless complexion. More on beauty PRICE SNATCH I swear by my secret hack to get beauty buys in Boots for HALF the price TikTokers such as @victoriasamson and @eringetty7 alone have racked up millions of views showing their step-by-step routine, which include putting hair in overnight, heatless curlers and sleeping in a collagen mask. While the nighttime get-up may look silly to some, I was willing to put it to the test to see if it could be the short cut I was craving for looking fresher, faster. MY TEST 10 I applied lip stain, a sleep-in face mask, heatless curlers and a very sexy chin strap Credit: THE SUN After ordering all my products online, I began my nighttime beauty prep with slightly damp hair and a set of heatless curlers, which cost just £2.25 from Shein. I wrapped my hair around the soft band, hoping to wake up with effortless waves. Next, I applied a £12 lip stain by Sacheu, which promised a naturally rosy tint by morning once wiped off. Then came the viral face mask that's been making the rounds on TikTok—part of the ever-growing Korean skincare craze. Morning shed skincare routine and benefits explained This ChicNana Bio Collagen Face Mask, costing £7.99 for four, is designed to be worn overnight; it goes on visible but gradually turns clear as it absorbs into your skin. As a side-sleeper, I was skeptical it would stay put, but I gave it a try. I followed that with a dab of castor oil on my lashes—meant to strengthen and promote growth over time. No overnight miracles expected there, but worth a shot. Then came the slightly absurd-looking £3.99 chin strap from Amazon, promising to 'sculpt jawlines' and 'prevent sagging skin.' I looked absolutely unhinged by this point—but I wasn't done. Finally, I applied the £14.99 SunnieSide Skin Beauty Sleep Tape—a mouth tape that claims to improve sleep, support jawline definition, and lock in overnight lip treatments. 10 My partner got the shock of his life as this 'beauty' showed up in the bedroom Credit: THE SUN 10 I was worried I wouldn't be able to sleep with all of this on my face and head Credit: THE SUN 10 Apparently I had nailed the King Baldwin from Kingdom of Heaven look, according to my partner Credit: Other20th Century Fox As I climbed into bed, my partner audibly gasped and joked that I looked like King Baldwin from Kingdom of Heaven. I couldn't even argue, I did look terrifying. Despite feeling ridiculous and unsure I'd manage to drift off at all, I actually slept through the night without any issues. THE RESULT 10 By morning, the chin strap had fallen off - but the face mask had gone clear and done its magic Credit: THE SUN 10 I was ready to 'shed' off all the products to see the transformation Credit: THE SUN 10 My hair had transformed overnight without needing heat Credit: THE SUN I woke up hoping I'd somehow transformed into a Disney princess overnight—but reality, as always, had other plans. My chin strap had wandered off sometime during the night, and my lip stain had smudged across my face—probably thanks to the moisture from the sheet mask (which, miraculously, had stayed in place and left my skin feeling surprisingly fresh). The mouth tape held firm too, and even better, it completely silenced my partner's snoring—thanks to the strip I'd 'generously' applied to him in solidarity. I was honestly amazed, and safe to say, he'll be wearing one every night from now on. The real triumph, though, was my hair. It had curled perfectly overnight, leaving it bouncy and ready to go—no styling required. I was least impressed with the lip stain, which had left my lips dry, so I gave them a boost with my Silk'n Lumilips LED Lip Mask, which is designed to visibly plump and brightens lips and the surrounding area. A quick swipe of mascara, and I was ready to head out the door, feeling put-together with barely any effort at all - in the morning at least. 10 I plumped my lips in seconds with the Silk'n Lumilips LED Lip Mask Credit: SUPPLIED WHAT DO EXPERTS SAY? But what should we really be doing for our skincare routine, and is the 'morning shed' too over the top? Shubhi Grover, Head of Consumer and Beauty at Sapience Communications, told Fabulous: "I believe there's a fine line between a ritual and a routine. "While elaborate morning shed routines may look visually impressive on TikTok, much of the real skin and hair work actually happens overnight, when the body is in recovery mode. 'Your evening routine should be intentional and not overwhelming, as most of us make that mistake. 'A few high-quality, well-formulated products tailored to your skin or hair type can go further than a 12-step ritual you won't sustain. 'I recommend focusing on hydration, barrier repair, and scalp care at night, to wake up glowing without the excessive morning 'undoing.'' The dream nighttime beauty routine, according to experts SHUBHI Grover, Head of Consumer and Beauty at Sapience Communications gave her absolute non-negotiables for nighttime... A gentle double cleanse to remove SPF and pollutants - double cleanse is my holy grail An ultra-hydrating serum with peptides or hyaluronic acid A silk pillowcase to reduce friction - great for both skin and hair And on my hair: a light scalp serum and a loose protective braid or silk bonnet She added: 'I would say it's less faff, more science, and most importantly, consistency goes a long way." CONCLUSION While the full nighttime beauty routine was fun to try, I'll be honest—it's a bit too time-consuming to keep up with every single night. That said, there are definitely a few steps I'll be sticking with. The heatless curlers are an easy win—no heat damage, and I wake up with soft, bouncy waves. The overnight face mask left my skin feeling fresh and hydrated, so that's staying in rotation too. And as for the mouth tape? I might not wear it every night, but my partner definitely will—his snore-free sleep was the real MVP of the whole experiment.
