Roy Cooper, Rodeo icon 'Super Looper', dies in tragic house fire at 69

Express Tribune30-04-2025

The rodeo world is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Roy Cooper, a legendary cowboy and eight-time world champion, who reportedly died in a house fire Tuesday night at his property in Decatur, Texas. He was 69.
Known affectionately as 'The Super Looper,' Cooper was a trailblazing force in calf roping and professional rodeo, earning his place as one of the most iconic figures in the history of the sport.
His passing has sent shockwaves through the rodeo community, with tributes pouring in from across the country.
"It is with great sadness that our family shares the passing of our Dad, The Super Looper, Roy Cooper," read a statement posted to Tuf Cooper's Facebook page, Roy's son and fellow rodeo star. "We're all in shock and at a loss for words from this tragedy at the moment."
While local authorities have yet to confirm the cause of death, media reports suggest a fire broke out at Cooper's home.
Randall Preuinger, Wise County EMS director, noted that he had 'nothing to confirm,' though the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) and multiple rodeo organizations have acknowledged the tragic news.
'The rodeo world will forever mourn the loss of Roy,' wrote one Oklahoma rodeo group.
"Roy wasn't just a legend in the arena — he was a legend in life," shared a Texas-based rodeo organization.
A Cowboy's Legacy
Born in New Mexico, Cooper made history as the PRCA Rookie of the Year in 1976, and went on to win eight world titles, including the coveted All-Around Cowboy crown in 1983.
His calm demeanor, fierce talent, and unmatched dedication earned him the nickname 'Super Looper'—a title he modestly brushed off.
'I don't know if I'm no Super Looper, I'm just Roy,' he said in a February episode of Let's Freakin Rodeo.
Cooper's influence on the sport spanned generations. He inspired future champions, mentored young cowboys, and maintained an unshakable love for rodeo, family, and faith.
'He inspired so many with his strength, grit, and heart,' one tribute read. 'Whether you knew him personally or admired him from afar, you knew he was someone special.'
Andra Estes Beatty, a 2020 Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame inductee, echoed those sentiments:
'Heartbroken to hear of the passing of Roy Cooper… He inspired generations of cowboys and his legacy lives on.'
Cooper's humility, sportsmanship, and enduring legacy will live on in the hearts of the rodeo community and beyond.

Expensify capitalizes on F1 movie sponsorship to boost user growth and expand international product features

Brad Pitt starrer 'F1' is one of the few big-budget original films this year. Photo: File Financial tech company Expensify is leveraging its title sponsorship role in Apple Originals' new F1 movie to boost revenue and expand its global brand awareness. The Portland-based firm paid a multi-million-dollar fee—part of over $40 million in total brand partnerships for the film—securing prominent placement as the fictional 'Expensify APX GP' Formula 1 team. The movie, which premiered in theaters nationwide on June 27, 2025, includes frequent on-screen references to Expensify, including brand visibility during mock press conferences and shout-outs from real-life Sky Sports commentator David Croft. CFO Ryan Schaffer told Sports Business Journal (SBJ) that the company is targeting a 5:1 return on its investment through increased sign-ups and product upgrades, though lower returns may be acceptable if brand awareness improves significantly. That visibility translated into measurable user engagement. After actor Damson Idris, who co-stars alongside Brad Pitt in the film, wore an APX GP firesuit to the Met Gala in May, user sign-ups spiked fourfold within hours, according to Schaffer. 'Anyone promoting the movie is also promoting Expensify,' he said, calling the placement potentially 'the get of a lifetime.' In tandem with the movie release, Expensify rolled out several new product features aimed at international users. These include support for 10 languages, integration with thousands of new banks globally, multi-currency billing, international reimbursement options, and expanded availability of the Expensify Visa Commercial Card. The company has launched a social media campaign to amplify its exposure and has already received sponsorship inquiries from real-world F1 and NBA teams. Though not committed to any deals yet, Schaffer said Expensify will evaluate opportunities. 'Ultimately, we want this to turn into revenue,' he added. 'The jury is still out on that.' Whether the campaign meets its ambitious targets or not, Expensify has already secured a major boost in visibility.

Messi's Miami and PSG progress to set up Club World Cup reunion

MIAMI: Inter Miami's Lionel Messi faces a tantalising reunion with former club Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup last 16 after both sides on Monday progressed to the knockout phase. Miami drew 2-2 with Palmeiras to go through second in Group A, after the Brazilian side fought back from two goals down to seal top spot. They now face an all-Brazil clash against Botafogo, who lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid but progressed from Group B in second at the expense of the Spaniards. Champions of Europe PSG won the group with a 2-0 victory over Seattle Sounders, paving the way for the clash with Messi and surprise package Miami. Goals from Tadeo Allende and Luis Suarez had Miami on course for a second victory in the tournament after their shock win over Porto. But Palmeiras struck twice in the last 10 minutes at Hard Rock Stadium through Paulinho and Mauricio to ensure they went through. Suarez, Messi, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Miami coach Javier Mascherano will also face their former coach Luis Enrique, who guided them to the treble when in charge at Barcelona in 2015. 'We're talking about the champions of Europe. We know many of their players and their coach, who I was lucky enough to have coach me, and I've always said he is the best in the world,' said Alba. 'I will connect with good friends there but once the game starts, we will compete, try to beat them, and why can't we do it? This is football.' Mascherano said Miami's progress had elevated Major League Soccer. 'It's a historic night for MLS, because we are into the best 16 teams in the world. All of the MLS has to be proud of Inter Miami,' he said. Portuguese side Porto and Egypt's Al Ahly were eliminated after a thrilling 4-4 draw which was not enough for either team to overhaul Palmeiras or Miami. Messi guides Inter Miami to historic victory over Porto at Club World Cup European champions PSG bounced back from their surprise defeat by Botafogo with a comfortable win in Seattle. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Achraf Hakimi scored either side of half-time as the Ligue 1 champions advanced as group winners because of Botafogo's late defeat to Atletico Madrid in Pasadena. 'It wasn't easy because the pitch was very different to what we are used to in Europe so we couldn't play with the fluidity that we like, but we adapted,' said PSG coach Enrique. PSG top scorer Ousmane Dembele played no part for a third game running after travelling to the tournament with an injury. Atletico out Atletico's 4-0 defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in their opener left them needing a big win against Botafogo to progress. Former France international Antoine Griezmann scored the game's only goal, lashing home a Julian Alvarez cross in the 87th minute to give Atletico a victory that ultimately was in vain. 'We're frustrated that we didn't qualify – we had six points,' Atletico coach Simeone said afterwards. 'At the end of the day we were punished because it wasn't enough.' Atletico needed a two-goal swing and were upset at penalty appeals being turned down. On Tuesday, already qualified Bayern Munich face Benfica and eliminated Auckland City take on Boca Juniors in Group C, with one more last 16 spot on the line. The English Premier League's Chelsea later tackle Esperance Tunis with the winners to progress alongside Flamengo, who face Los Angeles FC.

Pitt takes the wheel

Brad Pitt, whose new F1 film is out next week, has now driven a Formula One car for real after testing a McLaren at Austin's Circuit of the Americas, reported Reuters. The reigning world champions confirmed the Hollywood A lister drove a 2023 McLaren MCL60 car at the Texas track on Thursday. Media reports said the British-based team had been carrying out a private test with F1 regular Lando Norris and F2 driver Alex Dunne. It was the first time 61-year-old Pitt, who plays the fictional racing driver Sonny Hayes in the Apple Originals film, had driven a real Formula One car on track. The cars used in the making of the film were Formula Two cars, modified by Mercedes to look like real Grand Prix racers. Champions McLaren had teased the drive on Thursday with a social media post of overalls with the initials BP and the caption "It's a Sonny day in Austin". Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, a co-producer of the film, said in March that Pitt had shown real speed while testing the F2 cars. "Watching Brad drive around at speeds over 180 miles an hour was really impressive to see because it's not something you can just learn overnight," he said. "The dedication and the focus that Brad put into this process has been amazing to witness." Director Joseph Kosinski, who directed the hit Top Gun: Maverick, explained how Hamilton was the first person he reached out to with the idea of a film. "I sent him an email and just said 'I want to tell the story in your world. I want to make it as authentic as possible. Will you help me?'" he said. "And luckily Lewis said yes... He had actually talked to me earlier about playing a role in Top Gun: Maverick. So that's how I knew Lewis."
