Gingham has taken over as the trending dress print of summer 2025
Skip forward to 2025, and the merry old land of fashion is clearly still feeling the Dorothy effect, as gingham has usurped classic florals as the key dress print of this summer. While historically it may have conferred a certain girlish charm (it summons bucolic visions of, variously, summer picnics, The Great British Bake Off and grass-stained school uniforms), in recent years fashion brands have put a more contemporary spin on the print. For example, for Loewe's spring/summer 2025 men's show, Jonathan Anderson sent out angular, thigh-grazing shirts in black and pale blue check. Elsewhere, for autumn/winter 2025, Louis Vuitton opted for supersized checks fashioned into asymmetrical minidresses and sculptural shirts. Of course, there are plenty of more wearable, daytime options available off the runway, too. California brand Dôen has seen gingham success this season, with its Ischia and Leslie midi-dress both using strategic smocking to create eye-catching silhouettes. Younger designer brands, such as Frankies Bikinis and If Only If, have also delivered in this category, with the former collaborating with Bella Hadid on an edit of swimwear and ready-to-wear, which includes a number of ranch-worthy gingham dresses. Speaking of A-listers, Daisy Edgar-Jones was spotted in a Reformation gingham mini at Glastonbury, meanwhile girl-of-the-moment Olivia Rodrigo has been snapped in a number of gingham dresses, from vintage Ralph Lauren and Damson Madder, respectively. It's also worth mentioning the abundance of Comme des Garçons gingham pieces available on the resale market—most notably from Rei Kawakubo's 1997 collection (often referred to as the 'lumps and bumps' show)—which featured gingham dresses distorted by bulbous padding on the bust, rear and midriff, creating an avant-garde silhouette that challenged the conventions of traditional women's clothing construction. Once the headquarters of a 19th-century train company, the venue was transformed to resemble a grand station platform. It was the perfect backdrop for a collection that celebrates the beauty of being in transit. The line-up sees comprises of bold, vibrant silhouettes complemented by embellished knit sweaters and plaid pieces. For this season, the maison collaborated with pioneering electronic band Kraftwerk, specifically referencing their Trans-Europe Express album—a tribute to the golden age of rail travel through a modernist lens. The album cover appears on some of the looks, with its title quietly anchoring the spirit of the designs. Voluminous ruffled skirts add a distinct layer of character to the utilitarian collection. These references translated into a dynamic cast of characters: city dwellers, lone adventurers, daily commuters—each look representing a different persona and story, almost like snapshots from different stations in someone's life. It was utilitarian meets chic in the best way possible. An eclectic palette that felt like voyagers heading in every direction, from laid-back layering to sharp, tailored moments with a hint of formality. Think city-country mix looks comprising of fishing trip blanket coats, velvet dévoré dresses, sporty commuter jackets, and train attendant ties. Leather cargo shorts, ruffled velvet dresses, and vivid belts add a depth of texture to the range. These are the book to film adaptations we're looking forward to

Several classics of the past few decades are testament to the phenomenon's eternal staying power, from the Harry Potter franchise to Lord of the Rings and Twilight . Shakespeare's plays have spawned a never-ending universe of loose adaptations; 10 Things I Hate About You was a modern twist on The Taming of the Shrew , The Lion King took inspiration from Hamlet , and cult film Ran by Akira Kurosawa was a masterpiece that took its cues from King Lear. Fans of Jane Austen's period works—from Pride and Prejudice to Persuasion —have only grown in numbers in tandem with the popularity of the films. True enough, it's a tried-and-tested trick in the film industry that will only deliver us more cultural fodder to pour our conversations into. Films that get everyone asking: was the book or movie better? The former, often, emerges as the clear winner. Yet we'll do it again and again. Considering how revered its previous adaptations were—especially the one with Emma Thomson and Hugh Grant—there is much to live up to, but we're hopeful for Daisy Edgar-Jones to hold her own. Rich with subject material, the adaptation will be helmed by auteur Christopher Nolan and features a stacked cast of Matt Damon as Odysseus, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page and Mia Goth.
