A submersible finds sea creatures thriving in the deepest parts of the ocean

NEW YORK, July 31, (AP): An underwater voyage has revealed a network of creatures thriving at the bottom of deep-sea ocean trenches.
In these extreme environments, the crushing pressure, scant food, and lack of sunlight can make it hard to survive. Scientists know that tiny microbes prosper there, but less is known about evidence of larger marine life.
Researchers traveling along the Kuril-Kamchatka and Aleutian trenches in the northwest Pacific Ocean used a submersible to find tubeworms and mollusks flourishing at over 31,000 feet (9.5 kilometers) deep. The deepest part of the ocean goes down to about 36,000 feet (11 kilometers).
Scientists had surveyed this area before and had hints that larger creatures might live at such depths. The discovery confirms those suspicions and shows just how extensive the communities are, said Julie Huber, a deep-sea microbiologist with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
"Look how many there are, look how deep they are," said Huber, who was not involved with the research. "They don't all look the same, and they're in a place that we haven't had good access to before.'
The findings were published Wednesday in the journal Nature.
In the absence of light to make their food, many trench-dwellers, big and small, survive on key elements like carbon that trickle down from higher in the ocean.
Scientists think microbes in this new network may instead be capitalizing on carbon that's accumulated in the trench over time, processing it to create chemicals that seep through cracks in the ocean floor. The tubeworms and mollusks may survive by eating those tiny creatures or living with them and snacking on the products of their labor, scientists said.
With this discovery, future studies will focus on how these deep-sea creatures adapted to survive in such extreme conditions and how exactly they harness chemical reactions for food, study authors Mengran Du with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Vladimir Mordukhovich with the Russian Academy of Sciences said in a statement.
Their existence challenges "long-standing assumptions about life's potential at extreme depths,' the authors said.

WASHINGTON, Aug 5, (AP): Scientists say they have at last solved the mystery of what killed more than 5 billion sea stars off the Pacific coast of North America in a decade-long epidemic. Sea stars - often known as starfish - typically have five arms, and some species sport up to 24 arms. They range in color from solid orange to tapestries of orange, purple, brown, and green. Starting in 2013, a mysterious sea star wasting disease sparked a mass die-off from Mexico to Alaska. The epidemic has devastated more than 20 species and continues today. Worst hit was a species called the sunflower sea star, which lost around 90% of its population in the outbreak's first five years. "It's really quite gruesome,' said marine disease ecologist Alyssa Gehman at the Hakai Institute in British Columbia, Canada, who helped pinpoint the cause. Healthy sea stars have "puffy arms sticking straight out,' she said. But the wasting disease causes them to grow lesions and "then their arms actually fall off.' The culprit? Bacteria that have also infected shellfish, according to a study published Monday in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution. The findings "solve a long-standing question about a very serious disease in the ocean," said Rebecca Vega Thurber, a marine microbiologist at the University of California, Santa Barbara, who was not involved in the study. It took more than a decade for researchers to identify the cause of the disease, with many false leads and twists and turns along the way. Early research hinted the cause might be a virus, but it turned out the densovirus that scientists initially focused on was a normal resident inside healthy sea stars and not associated with disease, said Melanie Prentice of the Hakai Institute, co-author of the new study. Other efforts missed the real killer because researchers studied tissue samples of dead sea stars that no longer contained the bodily fluid that surrounds the organs. But the latest study includes a detailed analysis of this fluid, called coelomic fluid, where the bacteria Vibrio pectenicida were found. "It's incredibly difficult to trace the source of so many environmental diseases, especially underwater,' said microbiologist Blake Ushijima of the University of North Carolina, Wilmington, who was not involved in the research. He said the detective work by this team was "really smart and significant.' Now that scientists know the cause, they have a better shot at intervening to help sea stars. Prentice said that scientists could potentially now test which of the remaining sea stars are still healthy - and consider whether to relocate them, or breed them in captivity to later transplant them to areas that have lost almost all their sunflower sea stars. Scientists may also test if some populations have natural immunity, and if treatments like probiotics may help boost immunity to the disease. Such recovery work is not only important for sea stars, but for entire Pacific ecosystems because healthy starfish gobble up excess sea urchins, researchers say. Sunflower sea stars "look sort of innocent when you see them, but they eat almost everything that lives on the bottom of the ocean,' said Gehman. "They're voracious eaters.' With many fewer sea stars, the sea urchins that they usually munch on exploded in population - and in turn gobbled up around 95% of the kelp forests in Northern California within a decade. These kelp forests provide food and habitat for a wide variety of animals, including fish, sea otters, and seals.

Somehow, this livestream of sea life in the South Atlantic has Argentines hooked. The researchers behind this remotely operated vehicle filming life-forms 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) undersea told The Associated Press on Monday that they never expected their wonky deep-sea expedition to become such a social media sensation. The video feed has attracted more than 1.6 million views a day on YouTube, dominated TV news broadcasts, and even sparked a national conversation about the defunding of Argentine science under libertarian President Javier Milei. "It was a huge surprise for us,' said expedition leader Daniel Lauretta. "It's something that fills our hearts because we want to spread the word.' Outfitted with high-definition cameras and state-of-the-art sensors, the roving robot captures the enigmatic organisms of Mar de Plata's submarine canyon with exceptional clarity and detail for the first time. State-backed science organizations have lost 4,000 positions in the last year and a half - a combination of layoffs, frozen contracts, and resignations over poor working conditions and low pay. Conicet suffered a 21% budget cut in real terms last year. Salaries for Conicet researchers have lost 35% of their value. Many warn that the measures are setting off a brain drain. Seizing on the surge of public excitement about Conicet, researchers have called for a 48-hour nationwide strike on Wednesday to draw attention to their plight. Although Milei has not commented on the livestream, his allies have expressed disdain. The four U.S., Russian, and Japanese astronauts pulled up in their SpaceX capsule after launching from NASA's Kennedy Space Center. They will spend at least six months at the orbiting lab, swapping places with colleagues up there since March. SpaceX will bring those four back as early as Wednesday. Moving in are NASA's Zena Cardman and Mike Fincke, Japan's Kimiya Yui, and Russia's Oleg Platonov - each of whom had been originally assigned to other missions. "Hello, space station!'
