Pilot loses nearly RM95,000 in haj package scam
Nilai police chief Superintendent Abdul Malik Hasim said the victim, in her 30s, filed the report at the Nilai police station at 11.23am, saying that she had dealt with an individual from an Umrah travel agency who offered the haj package on Jan 14.
"The victim, who works for a local airline, made several transfers totaling RM194,970 to the agency's account as full payment for the package.
"However, she realised she had been scammed on March 15 after finding out that the agency was no longer in operation and she would not be able to perform the haj as promised," he said in a statement today.
Abdul Malik said the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, and efforts to trace the suspects are underway. - Bernama

A HOUSEWIFE was sentenced to eight years in prison by the Kuala Selangor Sessions Court today after pleading guilty to abusing her adopted daughter using a mortar and pestle, and slashing the victim's body with a knife. Judge Nurul Mardhiah Mohammed Redza meted out the sentence to the 54-year-old woman and ordered her to serve her prison term from the date of her arrest on June 28. The court also imposed a two-year good behaviour bond and ordered her to perform 40 hours of community service within four months after completing her prison sentence. The accused, who was the guardian of a 13-year-old girl, was charged with abusing the victim by hitting her with a piece of wood, a mortar and pestle, as well as slashing her body with a knife, causing physical injuries. The offence was committed at a house in Taman Bendahara, Kuala Selangor, in June. She was charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides for a maximum fine of RM50,000, imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both, upon conviction. According to the facts of the case, the accused, who had been caring for the victim since infancy, had physically assaulted and abused the girl, resulting in broken teeth and multiple injuries on her body. Investigations and a medical examination confirmed that the injuries sustained were consistent with physical abuse. Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Nor Hakimi Mohamad Rosedin urged the court to impose a proportionate and deterrent sentence as a lesson to both the accused and the wider community, citing the public interest and the alarming frequency of child abuse cases. 'The accused has committed a serious offence under Section 52B of the Penal Code. I respectfully request the court to review the photographs of the victim's injuries, which clearly show that the accused failed in her responsibilities as the victim's guardian,' he said. 'The accused's actions have left both physical and psychological scars on her adopted child, who is now suffering from trauma,' he added. Meanwhile, lawyer Khairul Hazwan Rashid Mohd Redduan from the National Legal Aid Foundation, who represented the accused, appealed for the prison sentence to commence from the date of her arrest. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A part-time hotel worker pleaded guilty in the sessions court in George Town, Penang, today to charges of raping and committing unnatural sex with an Australian woman. S Prasanth, 25, who made the plea before judge Juraidah Abbas, requested time to appoint a lawyer to represent him, Bernama reported. Prasanth is charged with raping the woman in a car and putting her in fear by pointing a metal scissors at her at a cemetery in Mount Erskine between 5.20am and 6am on June 28. The charge, under Section 376(2)(b) of the Penal Code, provides imprisonment of up to 30 years and whipping upon conviction. He is also charged with committing carnal intercourse against the order of nature without consent with the woman at the same time and location. The charge, under Section 377C of the Penal Code, provides for imprisonment of five to 20 years and whipping. The prosecution, led by Penang prosecution director Nordin Ismail and deputy public prosecutor Lee Jun Keong, did not offer any bail because of the seriousness of the offence and sensitivity surrounding bilateral relations between Malaysia and Australia. 'We do not want this matter to give a bad impression to foreign tourists who come to Malaysia. We cannot tolerate such offences,' said Nordin. The court did not allow bail and set July 31 for mention for the submission of documents and appointment of counsel.

Sept 10 set for decision on Rosmah's appeal over recusal of trial judge in solar case
PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal has fixed Sept 10 to deliver its decision on Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor's appeal to recuse a High Court judge who presided over her corruption trial involving the RM1.25 billion solar hybrid project in Sarawak. Court of Appeal deputy registrar Muhammad Noor Firdaus Rosli set the date during the case management today. On June 25, the Court of Appeal three-member bench comprising Justices Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim, Datuk Azman Abdullah and Datuk Noorin Badaruddin reserved their judgment after hearing submissions from both the prosecution and defence. Rosmah's lawyer, Datuk Akberdin Abdul Kader, confirmed the date when contacted by Bernama. The wife of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is appealing against the decision by the then High Court judge, Mohamed Zaini Mazlan, who has since been elevated to the Court of Appeal, dismissing her application for his recusal from presiding over her case. Rosmah filed the recusal application at the eleventh hour before Judge Mohamed Zaini was slated to deliver his decision on Sept 1, 2022. The application was based on allegations that a draft judgment in her case, purportedly prepared by a third party, had been leaked before its official delivery. On the same day, Judge Mohamed Zaini found Rosmah, 73, guilty of three corruption charges linked to the hybrid solar project, and sentenced her to 10 years in prison and a RM970 million fine, in default 30 years in prison. However, she was granted a stay of execution on both the custodial sentence and the fine, pending the disposal of her appeal before the Court of Appeal.
