Sunshine and support as Dale Sailing Open Day draws crowds to Neyland Marina

GLORIOUS sunshine, river cruises, and community spirit combined to make the 2025 Dale Sailing Open Day a resounding success at Brunel Quay on Saturday (May 10).
Hundreds of visitors turned out to explore Dale Sailing Company's facilities, meet the team, and enjoy a packed day of maritime activities along the picturesque Neyland waterfront.
Guests were treated to free river cruises on the Cleddau, tours aboard the Angle RNLI all-weather lifeboat, and hands-on safety demonstrations from HM Coastguard Dale, who provided crucial water safety advice throughout the day. The Milford Haven RNLI Fundraising Group were also in attendance, helping raise awareness of the lifesaving work carried out around the Pembrokeshire coast.
There was plenty to see and do on dry land too, with special deals, raffle prizes, and a lively boat jumble attracting bargain-hunters and boating enthusiasts alike. The event also marked Dale Sailing's official launch as the regional dealer for Whaly Boats in South and West Wales, with the latest models on display.
A spokesperson for Dale Sailing said: 'It was a real pleasure to welcome so many of you to Brunel Quay — from long-time friends to first-time visitors. Whether you came to see the Whaly Boats, enjoy the river, or just soak in the atmosphere, we're hugely grateful you chose to spend your Saturday with us.'
The sunshine added to the festive mood, with families enjoying food from Get Loaded Pembs and mingling with suppliers from leading marine brands including Honda, Mercury and Suzuki.
The company has announced that the prize draw winners from the day will be revealed next week via their Facebook page.
'We're proud to be part of such a passionate, friendly, and fun-loving boating community,' the Dale Sailing team added. 'Here's to a fantastic season ahead.'

Solar farm developer and footpath campaigners find perfect solution

Solar farm developer and footpath campaigners find perfect solution 'The result has been beneficial for both parties,' says council officer Solar farms are becoming a common sight in Wales and the UK (Image: Getty Images ) A solar farm developer and members of the public who were worried about losing access to land when it was built got together and came up with a better solution. Residents of Glais and elsewhere applied to Swansea Council four years ago to add 3.5km of "claimed" footpaths to the public rights of way map after learning that a large solar farm was planned off Graig y Pal. The application was supported with evidence from 35 people saying they had used the routes over a 20-year period, a meeting of the council's planning committee heard. The 20 megawatt solar farm was approved by the Welsh Government last year, and a compromise has now been reached resulting in the applicants discontinuing their support for the claimed footpaths to be formally recorded. Instead, an alternative 5.5km network of mainly bridleways has been proposed and agreed. It'll now need a "dedication agreement" to be signed by the developer and council, a report before the committee said. Speaking after the planning meeting, Cllr Brigitte Rowlands, whose Clydach ward includes Glais, said there was a lot to be learned from people working together. "A bit of give and take from everybody really helps," she said. Never miss a Swansea story by signing up to our newsletter here Councillors heard that part of the proposed 5.5km network would go through the solar farm and be fenced off for security reasons, but that it followed the developer's own access routes and therefore wouldn't interfere as much as the original application would have. The benefit for the applicants is a longer network with more bridleways, which can be used by cyclists and horse riders as well as walkers. Article continues below Addressing the committee, countryside access officer Chris Dale said: "Both the applicants and the developer have approached the situation with a willingness to compromise and the result has been beneficial for both parties." This made the case unusual, he said, as had the applicants' decision to stop supporting their own application. Mr Dale explained there was no mechanism in law to formally withdraw the application, meaning the committee was advised to refuse it and approve the alternative, larger network subject to the dedication agreement, which it did after a short discussion. Mr Dale also said a 380m section of the 5.5km network was in Neath Port Talbot, and that Neath Port Talbot Council had agreed to dedicate that section as a right of way in tandem with Swansea Council. He further explained that the proposed network did not include a footpath claimed by the applicants which ran across a neighbouring landowner's land. He said the applicants still sought to have this route added as a public right of way. "We will deal with that at a later date," he said. Cllr Rowlands, addressing the committee, said the longer network would benefit different users and that the cooperation reflected "a constructive and balanced approach between land management and public access". The 5.5km network is to be added to the rights of way map once the 68-hectare solar farm is built by CYP Solar. The council is responsible for recording, maintaining and protecting around 655km of public rights of way in Swansea. Article continues below

New application by CK Foodstores for new Tycroes store

CK Foodstores wants to build a convenience store on 6-8 Ammanford Road in Tycroes. This comes after the supermarket chain's first planning application was rejected last year, following a large petition by locals opposing the development and concerns raised by the owner of a supermarket based on the same street. The proposed development would be on 6-8 Ammanford Road in Tycroes. (Image: Google Street View) County Councillor for Tycroes, Tina Higgins said: 'There is significant opposition in the village to the proposal, which can be seen from the previous application the same developer submitted. "I believe the best use of the site is for housing. The site is currently derelict because the developer began working on the site before being granted any permission, and I don't think this behaviour should be rewarded. "The main concerns raised with me are around the junction at the centre of the village. "The access to a store would be another point on another already busy junction, coupled with larger vehicles during delivery times, this would impact on residents living on Tycroes Road, Ammanford Road, and Penygarn Road. "I am organising a public meeting and petition for residents to express their views if they wish to." Mr Mandip Dale and his family have run Tycroes Supermarket on 17 Ammanford Road for over 40 years. When asked about the first application by CK Foodstores, Mr Dale expressed how he was not happy with the development from a practical or personal point of view. (Image: File photo) He stated the proposed store would be located near a busy junction with a sharp bend, suggesting danger for motorists. Besides, explaining how a rival supermarket could lead to his business losing staff and customers. The application has re-emerged after Mr Dale had a grand reopening on November 22, when he showcased the refurbishment his supermarket went through and was joined by numerous locals who showed their support. The full new planning application was submitted on June 4, 2025, proposing to demolish the remaining redundant hot food takeaway and adjacent structure and replace it with a ground floor convenience store with an ATM machine along with an associated parking area. There is no altered access proposed for pedestrians, no public roads to be provided within the site, no new public rights of way to be provided and no diversions required for rights of way. Furthermore, there will be a bin store onsite if the application becomes successful, priority species will not be affected, and the proposal does not involve the need to dispose of trade effluents or waste.

However all 34 employees at the company, which was established in the early 1970s, were made redundant after the business failed to find a purchaser or investor. Administrators from Leonard Curtis have been selling off the business' assets since they were appointed, but newly released information show it is now shutting down entirely. Documents recently filed with Companies House show Dale's former headquarters has now been sold to haulage firm Maurice Hill Transport Limited for £1.2 million, reports Nottingham Post. The property is based on a three-acre site and is divided into two main buildings, both with manufacturing and office accommodation space. The money raised by its sale will be used to pay the company's creditors, including Lloyds Bank and HMRC. Its equipment and stock has also been sold off by the administrators, who revealed in financial documents that up to this point more than £62,000 had been raised by selling scrap metal and other materials from the closed factory. Basford-based auctioneer John Pye Auctions was appointed to sell some of the company's other items and raised £194,653 in total from sales of furniture, cars, and machinery. Administrators had been told Dale's intellectual property could sell for as much as £80,000. But sadly the administrators said: "customer interest in the IPR (Intellectual Property Rights) has been disappointing thus far" and that it was unlikely to hit this sum. Scottish firm goes bust after plunging into administration The firm's managers said it expected Lloyds, HMRC, and priority creditors - like former staff - would be repaid in full. The taxman had claimed £282,430 from the business, while employee-related claims totalled £47,625. Mansfield is in north Nottinghamshire and has a proud history of coal mining and textiles industries. The firm's website said its mining and oil rig equipment had been used in the Caspian Sea, Sardinia, Azerbaijan, the Gulf of Mexico, and in South Wales. However, following the decline of the UK mining industry, Dale's diversified into other industries including manufacturing hydraulic cylinders. What does going into administration mean? WHEN a company enters into administration, all control is passed to an appointed administrator. The administrator has to leverage the company's assets and business to repay creditors any outstanding debts. Once a company enters administration, a "moratorium" is put in place which means no legal action can be taken against it. Administrators write to your creditors and Companies House to say they've been appointed. They try to stop the company from being liquidated (closing down), and if it can't it pays as much of a company's debts from its remaining assets. The administrator has eight weeks to write a statement explaining what they plan to do to move the business forward. This must be sent to creditors, employees and Companies House and invite them to approve or amend the plans at a meeting. A Notice of Intention is used to inform concerning parties that a company intends to enter administration. It is a physical document which is submitted to court, usually by directors aiming to prevent a company from being liquidated. Like with a standard administration process, a Notice of Intention stops creditors from taking out any legal action over a company while they try and rectify the business. Dale's website explained it had worked with Eurostar, which operates international train services between Paris, London, Amsterdam and Brussels via the Channel Tunnel. Richard Pinder, director of restructuring and insolvency at Leonard Curtis, said last year: 'The company ran a marketing campaign last year to find a purchaser or investor to take the business forward which unfortunately was unsuccessful. "Upon my instruction to advise the company, it was clear that its financial and operational position was such that there was no realistic prospect of avoiding a cessation of trade. "And there was insufficient working capital or work in progress to support continued trade, even in the immediate short term. 'We are currently assisting the Redundancy Payments Service in dealing with the processing and payment of employee claims for redundancy and their other entitlements." Mr Pinder added that it was "uncertain" if unsecured creditors, such as companies owed money by Dale, would get much money back through the administration.
