This actor was a rare gem in the history of Indian cinema and spread the brilliance of his acting on the silver screen. But his early life was so bad and full of suffering that you will shudder to know about it. His condition was such that he was forced to eat food dropped on the road. That too food which had rat and cockroach filth in it. Nobody helped this actor in his difficult times. Out of helplessness, he slept under a bridge, and thieves and robbers helped him.
This actor went on to become a big star of Hindi cinema. His son is also a great dancer and actor today. Do you know which actor we are talking about? This actor closely witnessed the riots and violence in trains during the partition of India and Pakistan. He saw hundreds of people getting killed before his eyes. This is actor Jagdeep, who became famous as Surma Bhopali in 'Sholay'. He started his career in films as a child artist, but this journey was full of difficulties. Jagdeep suffered a lot from a very young age, about which his son Javed Jaffrey told 'Rediff' in 2021.
Javed Jaffrey had told that his father Jagdeep lived on the streets after coming to Mumbai. Jagdeep was from a rich family. His father was a lawyer for the Maharaja of Datia (near Gwalior). Jagdeep was the youngest of 10 siblings. But suddenly, one day his father died. Jagdeep was seven to eight years old then. His mother took him to Karachi and started living there.
But after the partition of India and Pakistan, Jagdeep and his mother came to India. But during this time, the riots that happened and trains full of dead bodies were coming to India… Jagdeep saw all this with his own eyes. Javed Jaffrey had mentioned this. After coming to India, Jagdeep and his mother had to live on the streets. They sold all the things and clothes they had in their bags so that they could fill their stomachs. On the other hand, their mother also used to work as a utensil washer
Gradually, that money got over. Then Jagdeep started living under the Byculla bridge in South Central Mumbai. To earn a living, Jagdeep did every small job. Sometimes he would sell soap and kites, and sometimes combs. Regarding this, Jagdeep himself said in an interview that he did not want to earn money by doing any wrong to survive. That is why he started selling goods on the road.
When Jagdeep and his family had no money left and were on the verge of dying of hunger, they would eat bad food. Javed Jaffrey had said that a baker used to sell the pieces of bread fallen on the floor for one paisa. Jagdeep and his family had to eat that. But before eating, they had to remove the dirt of rats and cockroaches from the pieces.
Javed Jaffrey had said that no one helped his father in that difficult time. But some drunkards and thieves used to help Jagdeep. That is why he considered him a good person. Jagdeep was given his first chance in films by B.R. Chopra. The film was 'Afsana' in which he was a child artist. After this, Jagdeep never looked back and kept doing whatever small roles he got. Jagdeep did such a good job in the film 'Panchhi Ek Daal Ke' that even India's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was impressed by him. Nehru was so happy that he even gave his personal staff to Jagdeep.

Chennai's Mixtura Vizha brings art to you

Unlike most art festivals or street performances, Mixtura Vizha doesn't offer a tightly packed agenda. It throws open various global art forms, placing them squarely in public spaces for people to experience them with an open mind. Curated by Shreya Nagarajan Singh under her banner SNS Arts Development Consultancy, along with KM Music Conservatory, in partnership with the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC), Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) and Uptown Kathipara Urban Square. 'This year, we chose three prime locations — Central metro station, Thiru Vi Ka Park, and Urban Square at Kathipara. The idea is to bring the arts into public spaces, and take it outside the traditional space of a sabha or an auditorium,' said Shreya. 'We want to make the arts accessible for everyone — be it someone taking the metro home or someone walking through a park.' With a total of eight performances ranging from classical music and dance to drama and koothu to techno and jazz, the city's spaces transformed into a platform for artistes. What makes Mixtura Vizha unique is its inclusion of art forms that general audience rarely witnesses live. At Central metro, the performances kicked off with KS Thejal's voice shifting between soft French compositions and soulful Indian classicals. The blend of beats — of modern and traditional instruments — attracted the passersby. People leaned on barricades, stood in clusters with their backpacks and luggage, some filming and others simply pausing to listen. It was during the setup for the next act that I spotted Adam Greig, artistic director of KM Music Conservatory. Reflecting on his collaboration and performance, Adam shared, 'I'm one of the co-founders and co-inspirators of Mixtura Vizha. Shreya and I were discussing back in 2021 about this idea of doing a festival in Chennai and Shreya came up with this concept of incorporating all the different types of art forms.' As he gearing for his first piano solo at the festival, he gestured toward the crowd and said, 'It's quite an exciting concept because the audience never know what they're going to get. They know who's playing, they know where it is happening, but they wouldn't know who's playing in which of the listed locations. It's fun for them too,' he exclaimed. Charumathi Chandrasekar also took the stage by storm with expressive Bharatanatyam movements.

‘Saiyaara' box office collection Day 3: Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda starrer records historic Rs 83 crore debut weekend; among highest-earning Bollywood films of 2025

'Saiyaara', the Mohit Suri-directed romantic drama, has delivered a historic opening weekend at the Indian box office, collecting over Rs 80 crore (India net) over its first three days. Featuring newcomers Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda in lead roles, the film has defied expectations and emerged not only as a standout success in 2025, but has also set a new benchmark for collections by films starring debutante actors. Box Office Performance The film, which marks the big-screen debut of Ahaan alongside Aneet, beat all expectations and early box office predictions to score this impressive feat. According to reports on sacnilk, the film earned an estimated Rs 21 crore on day 1 and saw good growth at the box office on day 2, earning an estimated Rs 25 crore. The film then went on to score its highest collection at the ticket windows on Sunday, earning an estimated Rs 37 crore, according to early estimates. Sunday's collection helped the film earn a total collection of Rs 83 crore India net. Highest Earning Films Of 2025 According to box office reports, the film has surpassed all predictions to take its place among the highest-earning Bollywood films of 2025. 'Saiyaara' not only outperformed Suri's previous opening records like 'Ek Villain' which earned Rs 16 crore and 'Aashiqui 2', which earned Rs 6.1 crore, but also positioned itself among the top 5 highest opening weekends of 2025. It is now trailing behind only big-ticket films like, Vicky Kaushal 's 'Chhaava' which earned Rs 121.43 crore, 'Housefull 5' which has an estimated net total of Rs 91.83 crore and 'Sikandar' which earned Rs 86.44 crore net. Occupancy Rate Saiyaara recorded an overall 71.18% Hindi occupancy on Sunday in Hindi-speaking regions. The film performed particularly well during its evening shots, with the highest footfalls recorded to be around 79.32% and 88.15%. Trade analysts are crediting the film's success to a combination of fresh casting, music, and Suri's emotional storytelling, which seems to have struck a chord with younger audiences. This impressive Rs 80+ crore debut for Panday, comes at a time when several other star kids, the latest being Shanaya Kapoor , failed to rake in even Rs 2 crore at the box office in the first week of the release of her debut film 'Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan'. Director Suri credits the film's authenticity and emotional truth. In interviews, he's spoken candidly about his desire to push past the rose-tinted portrayal of romance in Bollywood: 'In love, there will be pain… If love is not real, it's not felt. I believe in it more than I fantasise about it,' he told PTI. Bollywood vs Hollywood 'Saiyaara' has also beaten the likes of Hollywood films like 'Superman' and 'Jurassic World Rebirth'. The new release has comfortably shot past the collections of James Gunn's Superman, and is just a few crore shy of beating the Scarlett Johansson starrer dino film, which has a two-week total collection of Rs 86.6 crore. This film is expected to continue its upward trend at the box office and record a strong opening weekend. All eyes will now turn to Monday's numbers to see if the film can maintain its momentum and set a new box office record.

Rekha pushes for cultural unity via art and festivals

New Delhi: CM Rekha Gupta announced a series of initiatives on Sunday aimed at promoting cultural integration and national unity in Delhi. These initiatives include the inclusion of local artists from various states in regional festivals, promotion of non-Hindi languages among children in Delhi and the launch of a Student Exchange Programme with other states. Gupta stated that the Department of Art, Culture and Languages can play a vital role in this endeavour by broadening the scope of its programmes and activities. "The department must take initiatives beyond designated locations and bring them to the general public to enhance public participation," she said. She directed officials to ensure that regional festivals celebrated in Delhi include artists from the respective states, as this would help generate greater interest in these events. CM also stated that efforts will be made to explore possibilities for teaching non-Hindi languages to children in Delhi, enabling them to understand the social and cultural identities of other states. These directions were given during a recent meeting with the Department of Art, Culture and Languages, which minister Kapil Mishra also attended. The objective of the meeting was to enrich Delhi's cultural landscape and to involve all sections of society. "Delhi is not merely the capital city but also a reflection of the country's cultural identity," she said. "We want the art and culture of various states to reach every street and for every individual to feel connected to it." She added that theatre and folk arts are powerful tools for spreading awareness and information, often more effectively than other forms of communication.
