Fired 4 times in 18 years, this engineer says ‘AI is not the problem' behind tech layoffs

Indian Express2 days ago
Marc Kriguer, a seasoned software engineer with nearly 30 years of work experience in the tech world, has weathered more than his fair share of professional storms. At 59, he's been laid off four times over the past 18 years, most recently from Walmart Global Tech, where he was part of a sweeping round of cuts that affected roughly 1,500 employees.
In a candid essay for Business Insider, Kriguer opened up about his journey through an industry that's constantly shifting. His fascination with computers began before most kids had even seen one, he was debugging code before age 10. After officially stepping into the tech industry nearly three decades ago, his first major career setback came in 2008, when Sun Microsystems let him go just ahead of its acquisition by Oracle. Other layoffs followed, including one during the early Covid-19 outbreak and another at a company focused on plagiarism detection.
Despite the rapid rise of AI tools in software development, Kriguer doesn't think automation is the main culprit behind the wave of tech layoffs. He admits he was initially reluctant to adopt AI for coding but sees value in using it to check work. Still, he's noticed a shift, many job postings now list AI proficiency as either a preferred or required skill, hinting at a future where it might be non-negotiable.
Kriguer sees a different root cause behind the layoffs: 'Companies hire too quickly,' he told Business Insider, citing the pressures of venture capital and the high cost of tech salaries. To him, the issue is less about disruptive technology and more about unsustainable hiring sprees and subsequent budget cuts.
Even with the challenges, Kriguer hasn't lost hope. He's actively applying for new roles, about 40 so far, and has made it to interviews with 15 companies. While he admits that the software engineering landscape isn't expanding as fast as it once did, he still sees opportunities: 'Demand hasn't disappeared,' he says, and he believes experience and the ability to adapt remain valuable in today's tech world.

Financial literacy requires genuine efforts

Investor awareness is about statistics. There is a lot of crowing about investor awareness programmes that a regulator like the Securities and Exchange Board of India, a mutual fund or a stock exchange conducts across the length and breadth of India. They claim to do them in local languages with thousands of financial trainers. All that effort has translated into a 27% financial literacy rate, according to a study published in the latest monthly bulletin of the National Stock Exchange. In a country of 140 crore people, a quarter are financially literate. It is no small achievement if you think about absolute numbers. However, it is lower than the global average of 35%. The survey, which was quoted in the NSE bulletin, was conducted in 2019. The study states that there are significant variations in the financial literacy levels of urban and rural India, glaring disparities in the states and regions, and significant differences between men and women. The worrying factor is that the boom in the financial markets happened after 2019 and in the post-COVID-19 world. Demat and trading accounts and mutual fund folios surged to record levels. All of that happened on a weak and skewed base of financial literacy. That explains the country's 7-8% penetration of financial services products. All of that is despite a dramatic surge in the effort to increase investor awareness. Assertive efforts Financial literacy programmes cover basic topics across financial products. They probably touch upon the topics of financial advice and asset allocation. However, learning about these things is not a one-off exercise. It is a constant learning curve. On top of that, the literacy push lacks assertiveness. For example, there is no reason for anyone to indulge in day-trading or derivatives without adequate knowledge. When regulators like Sebi publish studies about most traders losing money, many social media champions swing into action to tell people that, however, financial literacy clashes with business interests. A stock exchange or a broker will not overtly discourage people from trading in risky instruments. Those high trading volumes generate income for the entire stock market ecosystem. Similarly, mutual funds often balance their act of pushing passive and active mutual fund schemes. The focus is getting investors to buy into schemes that provide a better fund management fee. An index or an exchange-traded fund carries a minimal fund management fee.

Builder faces penalty for four-year delay in unit handover in Gurgaon

Gurgaon: Haryana Real Estate Regulatory Authority (HRera) has ordered a realty firm to pay interest at 11.1% per annum to a complainant for a delay of over four years in handing over a commercial unit in its Sector 70 project, '70 Grandwalk'. The complaint, filed under Section 31 of the RERA Act, was disposed of on July 24 by HRera (Gurgaon). The interest must be paid within 90 days from the date of the order. Additionally, Shine Buildcon Pvt Ltd was instructed to hand over possession within 30 days of dues being cleared by the complainant and to execute the conveyance deed as per Section 17 of the Act. It ruled that Shine Buildcon could not demand any amount not stipulated in the original buyer's agreement. Charges for electricity, maintenance and other utilities were also to be levied strictly as per the agreement and on a proportionate basis. The complainant booked Unit A-001, a 907 sqft commercial shop, on the ground floor of the project in Oct 2014. A buyer's agreement was executed on May 11, 2015, under which the developer was obligated to hand over possession within 42 months, along with an additional six-month grace period. This brought the due date for possession to May 11, 2019. However, the occupation certificate was issued only on Oct 10, 2023 and the offer of possession was made on Nov 24, 2023 — marking a delay of more than four years. Shine Buildcon argued the delay was due to force majeure conditions such as demonetisation, GST implementation, environmental bans and the Covid-19 pandemic. HRera dismissed these claims, observing the cited disruptions were temporary and could not justify the prolonged delay.
