Given choice to retreat amid Pak shelling, 7 BSF women sent enemy running
In doing so, Bhandari became the first woman officer from India to lead a team in a combat role, even as the Indian Army is yet to deploy women in similar capacities.Under Operation Sindoor, the BSF retaliated with full force – striking back at 76 Pakistani border outposts and 42 forward defence locations, and destroying three terrorist launch pads, along with 70 forward Pakistani posts.NEHA BHANDARI: SERVICE RUNS IN HER BLOODadvertisementBhandari and her team were given the choice to withdraw by their male seniors. But for Bhandari, whose roots lie deep in a family tradition of service, stepping back was never an option. With a grandfather who was an Army veteran, and both her parents CRPF personnel, Bhandari knew the honour of service."I feel proud to be manning a post along the International Border with my troops. It is approximately 150 metres away from the Pakistani post in the Akhnoor-Pargwal area," Bhandari told news agency PTI. "It was an honour to serve at the forward post and give a befitting reply with all available weapons from my post to enemy posts."During the operation, the women personnel manned critical positions, delivering heavy retaliatory fire on Pakistani locations in adjoining Sialkot."I had three posts falling in my area. I pinned down the people at all three hostile locations. We hit them with every weapon we had. They were forced to flee their posts," Bhandari told PTI.The operation spanned three days and three nights, ending only after sustained fire from the BSF forced the Pakistani forces to retreat from their forward locations.SIX OTHERS WHO WERE 'HIGH ON JOSH'Of the six women who engaged in direct firing, four had joined the force as recently as 2023, while two brought nearly two decades of experience. Veterans Manjit Kour and Malkit Kour from Punjab led two crucial positions—an observation post and a bunker.advertisementFor Swapna Rath and Shampa Basak from West Bengal, Sumi Xess from Jharkhand, and Jyoti Banian from Odisha, the mission was a powerful test of the skills and discipline developed through rigorous training.Constable Shankari Das, who manned a gun position on a forward post, said, "We have our duties. Just as we are deployed at the border, we carry out our tasks as usual. Our senior commanders briefed us on the situation and warned that firing might take place. We were instructed to respond to fire with fire. So, as soon as the firing started, we responded with fire.""The 'josh' was quite high. Everyone among us gave their best, because everything we did was for the country and its honour," she added. The stakes were high."I had 18 to 19 women border guards with me. To be precise, six women were engaged in direct firing at observation post locations. We are proud of them," said Bhandari.Women have had to fight for combat roles. But this example of valour by the BSF personnel will have several succeeding stories. For the first time in history, 17 women officer cadets passed out from the National Defence Academy (NDA) on Friday.Tune InMust Watch

Jaishankar said India's diplomatic approach has largely maintained the same response to terror attacks abroad as it does for those on its own soil. 'In that respect honestly, we have been much more consistent and principled,' he added. Jaishankar emphasised the importance of pushing for a more unified global response to terrorism. 'Many of them are not doing it or not doing it sufficiently enough, and part of diplomacy is to exhort them, encourage them, persuade them, motivate them to do that,' he said. 'That is why it's important to speak up, and to carry them with us to the best possibility,' he added. No government does that.' Jaishankar said at the Quad foreign ministers' meeting he told his partners that India had the right to defend itself against terrorist activities and hold the perpetrators accountable. 'With each of my counterparts, I have shared with them the sense that the nature of the terrorists challenge, the fact that we have confronted it over multiple decades and that we are very resolved today to respond to it very firmly and we have the right to defend ourselves,' he said. #WATCH | Washington, DC | EAM Dr S Jaishankar says, "...With each of my counterparts, I have shared with them the sense that the nature of the terrorists challenge, the fact that we have confronted it over multiple decades and that we are very resolved today to respond to it very… — ANI (@ANI) July 2, 2025 STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'The perpetrators of terrorism must be held accountable, they must be brought to justice and that's important because we have to communicate to the world that what we did on 7th May, the objective of Operation Sindoor is that if there are terrorist attacks, we will act against the perpetrators, the supporters, the enablers. That message was conveyed with great clarity,' he added. Jaishankar further said the issue of US President Donald Trump brokering the ceasefire between India and Pakistan did not come up at the meeting, although he maintained that a truce was decided in the meeting between the DGMOs of two countries. When you have a broadband set of people who speak with one voice abroad, it conveys a strong message of national unity. It underlines a certain seriousness about responding to terrorism… You saw the political pluralism of India come together on an important issue and send a strong unified message and I think that was something really great and it's something which quite apart from being a minister, honestly, as a person, as an Indian citizen, I applaud that,' said the external affairs minister. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD India launched Operation Sindoor targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. India struck several terror hideouts and eliminated more than 100 terrorists. Earlier today, the foreign ministers of all Quad countries unequivocally condemned the April 22's ghastly terror attack, which claimed 26 lives. 'We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and extend our heartfelt wishes for a swift and full recovery to all those injured. We call for the perpetrators, organisers, and financiers of this reprehensible act to be brought to justice without any delay and urge all UN member States, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant UNSCRs, to cooperate actively with all relevant authorities in this regard,' the statement said.
