Major Rickie Fowler Announcement Made Ahead of the 2025 PGA Championship

Yahoo06-05-2025
After withdrawing from the WM Phoenix Open in February before the second round due to illness, and then failing to qualify for the Masters Tournament in April, fan-favorite golfer Rickie Fowler has been away from the spotlight on multiple occasions over the past few months.
However, he's set to compete this Thursday at the Truist Championship as he looks to find his rhythm and work his way back into contention as one of the sport's top players.

In 2024, Fowler recorded just one top-10 finish—compared to eight during the 2022-23 season. While he's still in search of his first major title, Fowler owns 10 professional wins and has had several memorable runs in major tournaments.
Now, with one of the biggest events of the year just around the corner—the PGA Championship from May 15 to May 18 at Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina—Fowler was officially announced on Tuesday as a participant.
Fans reacted with joy seeing Fowler's name in the field:
"Whether or not he's towards the top of the leaderboard or not, tournaments are more fun when Rickie's in the field," a fan said.

"I enjoy watching Fowler play but major entrants should have to earn their way in with their play- not their name," another fan posted.
"YESSIR!! Love to see him get his first major," someone else added.
One more fan commented, "Awesome."

Fowler finished tied for 51st at the 2024 PGA Championship, but in previous years, he delivered stronger performances—finishing 23rd in 2022 and an impressive 8th place finish in 2021 during a strong four-day showing.

Collin Morikawa recalls best shot, and it's not driving the green at the 2020 PGA

The race for the FedExCup Playoffs and top-100 PGA Tour exemption status is heating up, and the John Deere Classic is a key week for those on the bubble, like Rickie Fowler. Hailey Hunter brings the latest from Illinois. Scottie Scheffler was raving about a 3-iron he hit into a par 5 at the Travelers Championship because it came off perfectly. That led him to recall two other pure shots in recent memory, a 9-iron on the par-3 third at The Players Championship and a 6-iron on the fifth hole at the 2022 Masters. It's not always about the score it yields, just the pureness of the shot. That's why whenever Collin Morikawa thinks about one of the best shots he ever hit, it wasn't necessarily his driver on the par-4 16th at Harding Park that stopped 7 feet away for eagle when he won the 2020 PGA Championship. That was a stock drive with a great bounce. Instead, he thought back to his final hole when he won the DP World Tour Championship in 2021 to become the first American to win the Race to Dubai . 'It was on 18, par 5, front left pin,' Morikawa said last week. 'I've watched the shot many times on YouTube because I'm like, 'How do I make it that easy?' Front left pin, water on the left, had 4-iron I think out of the first cut and I hit it exactly where I wanted. I could miss it in the water, lose the tournament; hit it in the bunker, not make up-and-down. It was picture perfect. 'And it's rare you get to do that, but that's why we keep practicing,' he said. 'I'm telling you, it's inches, margins, centimeters, degrees. We're crazy, but we love it.'

These are the LIV golfers who have qualified for the 2025 British Open

Ahead of the final qualifiers for the 2025 British Open on Tuesday, there were 15 LIV golfers already in the field for Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. Three more have now joined them. Fifty-two-year-old Englishman Lee Westwood is headed back to the British Open for the first time since 2022 while past U.S. Open champ and local product, Graeme McDowell, failed to qualify to compete at the course where he grew up. They were among the 16 LIV golfers spread across the four qualifying sites (three in England, one in Scotland) hoping to play well enough to get in the final men's major of the year. At each site, only the top five would advance and it's noteworthy that the three LIV golfers who survived their qualifier each won their qualifier. There were two LIV golfers, Paul Casey and Branden Grace, who did not attempt to qualify. Rickie Fowler's name came up as a possible vice captain for U.S. team at the Ryder Cup

As soon as former two-time U.S. Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III heard last year that Keegan Bradley would be at the helm of Team USA at Bethpage Black this fall, he told Bradley he was going to be a playing captain. 'First thing I said to him,' Love told Golfweek earlier this year. 'I hope he does it. He might need more assistants but he can do it. I told him to play one match a day.' Bradley's recent victory at the Travelers Championship has made that scenario a real possibility. He's improved to No. 9 in the U.S. Ryder Cup point standings with the top six automatically qualifying for the team. Could veteran American Ryder Cuppers Rickie Fowler or Jordan Spieth become a vice captain if Bradley needs another helping hand? The subject was broached on Tuesday to Fowler during his pre-tournament press conference ahead of the 2025 John Deere Classic in Silvis, Illinois, where Fowler is competing for the first time since 2010. 'Haven't heard anything on that. Obviously I've loved all the team events I've been on and been a part of,' he said. 'We'll deal with that if it comes to that. I'm obviously happy to help out, but I know Keegan is working on trying to make his own team. He's got some great guys at his side helping out. If they want me there, I would hope scheduling and everything would work out. It would be fun to be a part of. We'll deal with that when it gets to it.' Fowler, who was a captain's pick in 2023 in Rome and has represented the Stars and Stripes five times, currently is languishing at No. 44 in the rankings. Jordan Spieth, who has been on the last five Ryder Cup teams, isn't much better, sitting at No. 25. If one or both don't make a late push, they would make great additions to Bradley's back office and would be good prep for when both eventually get a turn as captain. Bradley previously has announced 2018 U.S. Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk, 2026 U.S. Presidents Cup captain Brandt Snedeker and Webb Simpson and Kevin Kisner as vice captains for Bethpage. "If the other guys are saying we want you (to play) Keegan, you've got to do it and not worry about what the outside world thinks," Love said. "From the way it's gotten set up over the years, the machine behind the captain, he could do it."
