PMI in India Hails Track & Trace (T&T) Mechanism Roll Out in the country Aimed At Curbing Illicit Tobacco Trade
With operations across multiple markets, PMI brings deep, practical experience from some of the world's most advanced T&T systems & implemented it voluntarily in 140+ markets worldwide. In the European Union, PMI operates under the Tobacco Products Directive, where every pack is digitally tagged and monitored through the supply chain. Similar systems have been successfully deployed in UK, Russia, Jordan, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), where PMI has worked with national authorities to build scalable, locally adapted traceability frameworks. Across all markets, the outcome have been consistent: better visibility, stronger compliance, and measurable reductions in illicit trade.
Illicit tobacco trade isn't just a revenue problem—it's a public health threat, a blow to lawful businesses, and fuel for the informal economy. Track and Trace is a proven tool for modernizing supply chains and enforcement. By clearly separating legal from illegal products, it not only protects consumers but also secures tax collections and promotes a level playing field for compliant operators.
Emphasising the need for a stringent T&T mechanism, Navaneel Kar, Managing Director, IPM India said, 'This is a landmark reform and a visionary step towards a cleaner, more modern, and a transparent market. With thoughtful execution, India's T&T system can reshape the fight against illicit tobacco trade—boosting public trust, strengthening government revenues, and accelerating the modernization of enforcement practices. Eliminating illicit tobacco trade has been a longstanding priority for us and remains integral to our broader efforts in driving operational excellence and building a sustainable future. PMI has long invested in technologies that protect supply chain integrity globally, and we are committed to partnering with the Indian government to make this initiative a success.'India's move to ratify the illicit tobacco trade protocol, also aligns with international standards. T&T is a core requirement under Article 15 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and the 2014 Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products. As one of the world's largest tobacco markets and a key transit hub, India's leadership sends a powerful global signal toward modernization and digital oversight.
Implementation of the proposed T&T systems should allow interoperability, facilitate innovation and the optimization of enforcement activities along with independent, cost-effective solutions that do not disrupt the manufacturing and distribution environment.
But technology alone won't deliver results. Collaboration is essential. Effective systems require close cooperation between governments, industry players, and technology providers. Solutions must be flexible enough to reflect India's enforcement realities and dynamic enough to stay ahead of evolving risks.
India's T&T mechanism rollout is just the beginning. It sets the stage for a broader modernization of supply chain regulation—expanding across more products, deeper distribution layers, and even into other sectors facing similar challenges. With smart partnerships and sustained innovation, India can build one of the world's most resilient, transparent, and future-ready regulatory ecosystems.

Market outlook: Q1 results, PMI data, global cues to drive stock market in upcoming week
Mumbai: The upcoming week is expected to be crucial for Indian stock markets, with a mix of domestic and global factors likely to influence investor sentiment including key Q1 earnings, PMI data, infrastructure output figures, and developments around the India-US trade deal. Between July 21 and 25, several major companies -- including Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, Bajaj Finance, Nestle India, and Cipla -- will announce their financial results for the first quarter (Q1) of FY26. The market will also react to the earnings of heavyweights like Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank, and ICICI Bank. On the macroeconomic front, India will release data on core infrastructure output as well as Manufacturing and Services PMI. These indicators are critical to assessing the overall health of the economy. Globally, any fresh updates on the India-US trade negotiations, fluctuations in crude oil prices, and upcoming inflation and interest rate data from major economies could sway market sentiment. Last week, benchmark indices witnessed volatility. The Sensex dropped 742 points or 0.90 per cent to close at 81,757, while the Nifty slipped 181 points or 0.72 per cent to settle at 24,968. In contrast to large-cap weakness, mid- and small-cap stocks outperformed. The Nifty Midcap 100 gained 462 points or 0.79 per cent to 59,104, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 added 196 points or 1.05 per cent to end at 18,959. Among sectoral indices, Auto, PSU Banks, Pharma, FMCG, Metal, Realty, Media, Energy, and Commodities ended in the green. However, IT, Financial Services, and Private Banks saw declines. Ajit Mishra of Religare Broking said, "Nifty closed below the key psychological mark of 25,000, indicating persistent caution in the market. A break below the immediate support level of 24,900 could open the door to further downside, potentially dragging the index towards the 24,450–24,700 range in the coming sessions."

Gold rate outlook: Prices may trade in tight range in coming week - What will drive the trend?
Gold rate outlook: Gold prices are expected to trade in a narrow range next week as investors await key global cues, including US economic data, trade negotiations, and policy signals from central banks, analysts said. Focus will be on Fed Chair Jerome Powell's speech and PMI data from major economies like the US, UK, and Eurozone, while the European Central Bank's interest rate decision will also be closely watched for its impact on gold prices, analysts added. Analysts told PTI that market participants will also observe the European Central Bank's stance on interest rates to understand potential impacts on bullion values. According to Pranav Mer, Vice President, EBG - Commodity & Currency Research, JM Financial Services, the upcoming week's focus will centre on trade discussion outcomes, Federal Reserve officials' statements, US economic data, including property market figures, weekly unemployment claims, and orders for durable goods. "Gold prices are seen consolidating in a range over the past couple of weeks amid a lack of fresh triggers and recovery in the US Dollar in the given period," Mer told the agency. He noted that bullion's downward movement appears restricted while attention remains on trade discussions between the US and its trading partners, such as India and China. As the August 1 deadline approaches, trade discussion uncertainties are expected to boost gold's safe-haven appeal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Additionally, domestic festival demand from August to October is anticipated to support prices, according to Mer. In the previous week, August delivery precious metal futures increased by Rs 200 or 0.2% on the Multi Commodity Exchange. Prathamesh Mallya, DVP-Research, Non-Agri Commodities and Currencies at Angel One, noted that gold values have increased approximately 2% over ten days in international markets, reaching USD 3,350 per ounce. "The positive momentum in gold has been driven by the US President's tariff actions on BRICS nations and possible duties on the EU, increasing investor demand for safe-haven assets," he said. During the previous week, September delivery silver futures achieved a new peak of Rs 1,15,136 per kilogram on the MCX. Experts said silver is evolving into a strategic metal as supply tightens and demand from electric vehicles, solar panels, and electronics rises, setting the stage for a major rally. "Silver is maturing from the 'poor man's gold' to a strategic metal for smart investors. With supply deficits in the world deepening and demand from EVs, solar, and electronics increasing, fundamentals are in place for a major rally," Sandip Raichura, CEO of Retail Broking and Distribution & Director, PL Capital - Prabhudas Lilladher told PTI. "The gold-to-silver ratio of around 90X indicates space for dramatic catch-up. A weakening dollar, persistent inflation, and surging ETF flows are supporting silver's attractiveness," Raichura added. Gold may trade in tight range ahead of US data, Fed cues: Analysts
Gold prices are likely to remain range-bound in the coming week as investors await clarity on global trade negotiations, upcoming US macroeconomic data and signals from the Federal Reserve, analysts said. Traders will closely watch Fed Chair Jerome Powell's speech and global PMI data from major economies, including the US, UK and Eurozone. The European Central Bank's interest rate decision will also be closely tracked for cues on the bullion price trajectory, they said. Pranav Mer, Vice President, EBG - Commodity & Currency Research, JM Financial Services, said that in the week ahead, focus will remain on the trade negotiation outcome, Fed official speeches, US macro data, including housing market, weekly initial claims, and durable goods orders. "Gold prices are seen consolidating in a range over the past couple of weeks amid a lack of fresh triggers and recovery in the US Dollar in the given period," Mer said, adding that downside in bullion looks limited as focus remains on the trade negotiations between the US and its trading partners, such as India and China. With the August 1 deadline coming closer, uncertainty around trade talks is likely to support gold's safe-haven demand. Meanwhile, domestic festive demand from August to October is expected to further aid prices, he said. Last week, the precious metal futures for August delivery rose Rs 200 or 0.2 per cent on the Multi Commodity Exchange. Prathamesh Mallya, DVP-Research, Non-Agri Commodities and Currencies at Angel One, said gold has rallied by about 2 per cent over the past 10 days in the overseas markets, moving to around USD 3,350 per ounce. "The positive momentum in gold has been driven by the US President's tariff actions on BRICS nations and possible duties on the EU, increasing investor demand for safe-haven assets," he said. Jateen Trivedi, Analyst at LKP Securities, said, "US Dollar's strength last week kept gains in gold limited, rupee weakness is likely to cushion downside pressure in the domestic markets. Overall, gold is likely to remain volatile in the near term". According to NS Ramaswamy, Head of Commodity & CRM at Ventura, "If the proper catalysts, such as weaker US dollar, geopolitical risks, robust investor demand, continued central bank purchases materialise, gold could gain another 4-8 per cent in the second half after a strong 26 per cent rise in the first half of 2025". Last week, silver futures for September delivery hit a record high of Rs 1,15,136 per kilogram on the MCX. "Silver is maturing from the 'poor man's gold' to a strategic metal for smart investors. With supply deficits in the world deepening and demand from EVs, solar, and electronics increasing, fundamentals are in place for a major rally.
