Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva died in a car accident on Thursday. The incident occurred around 12:30 am local time in the Spanish province of Zamora. According to Spanish police, Jota's car veered off the road while attempting to overtake another vehicle. A tyre blowout caused the car to lose control and catch fire.
A memorial site has been established at Liverpool's iconic Anfield stadium, where fans and former players have recently left hundreds of bouquets of flowers, shirts, scarves, and pictures.
Their funeral was held on Saturday in the Portuguese town of Gondoma, at the Matriz de Gondomar church, located 33 kilometres from Porto.
Some players were initially expected to report back to the club on Friday, but the tragic news prompted them to delay their plans. The Liverpool squad, led by Virgil Van Dijk and head coach Arne Slot, attended Jota's funeral to pay their respects.
Who Is Diogo Jota?
Jota, 28, was a significant player for both Portugal and Liverpool. Since joining the club in 2020 from Premier League side Wolves, he contributed to winning major trophies including the Premier League, FA Cup, and two EFL Cups. During his tenure at Anfield, he scored 65 goals in 182 matches and was highly regarded for his work ethic and ability to perform in critical moments.
For Portugal, Jota earned 49 caps and scored 14 goals. He was part of the squad that won the UEFA Nations League title in 2019 and again in 2025, when Portugal defeated Spain in the final. The forward had celebrated that victory with his teammates just weeks ago.
When Will Liverpool Play Next?
Liverpool's first pre-season friendly is set for Sunday against Championship side Preston, but ticket sales for this match have been suspended pending a final decision on whether it will proceed.

Malaga withdraws as host city in 2030 World Cup bid

Spanish city Malaga on Saturday withdrew from being a host venue for the 2030 World Cup, to be held in Spain, Portugal and Morocco. Spain had put forward 11 stadiums to be used, including La Rosaleda in the south coast city. However Malaga mayor Francisco de la Torre said hosting matches could cause problems for the city's club and fans, because of reconstruction work needed on the stadium. 'Choosing between the World Cup and the club, we choose the club and the fans,' said De la Torre after a meeting with the Malaga council and the regional government of Andalusia. 'After (several) meetings... we believe that the most responsible, prudent and sensible thing to do today is to abandon Malaga's World Cup (hosting). 'If the World Cup is a risk for the club and a problem for the fans, it's not worth continuing with.' Malaga would have to play at a 12,500 capacity alternative stadium while reconstruction on La Rosaleda took place, and they currently have over 26,000 season ticket holders. The works would have cost an estimated 270 million euros ($316 million) but the mayor said the decision had not been made in order to cut costs. 'We want there to be a new stadium. It will not be for the World Cup but there will be, that's a firm commitment,' added De la Torre. 'We're not doing this to save money but because it's for the best for the city, the fans and the club.' Spanish second division club Malaga competed in the Champions League in 2013 but subsequently dropped as low as the third-tier amid a financial crisis. In March Spain's head of World Cup 2030 organisation Maria Tato resigned after being accused of fixing the process to decide which stadiums would host matches. Newspaper El Mundo said ratings for potential venues were altered to favour Anoeta in San Sebastian, at the expense of Balaidos in Vigo. The Galician city as well as east coast city Valencia are options to replace Malaga as a host. In June La Liga club Valencia completed financing for the Nou Mestalla stadium, which is scheduled to open in 2027 with a 70,000 capacity. Related Topics 2030 FIFA World Cup

Hugo Ekitike's potential €100m transfer: Who will secure star striker?

Hugo Ekitike, Eintracht Frankfurt's star striker, is at the center of a transfer tug-of-war, with a €100 million ($117m) price tag. The 23-year-old is drawing interest from Liverpool, Manchester United, and Newcastle United. Hugo Ekitike has been remarkable in the Bundesliga. He has scored 22 goals and provided 12 assists in 48 appearances during the 2024/25 season. His speed, sharp finishing, and playmaking ability make him a complete forward, ideal for the Premier League's high intensity. Eintracht Frankfurt's Champions League qualification for 2025/26 has boosted his profile, but the club is bracing for bids from England's elite, with the high valuation. Liverpool are frontrunners, with manager Arne Slot eager to strengthen his attack. Ekitike is seen as a potential upgrade or complement to Darwin Nunez, who could be sold to fund the transfer. Manchester United view Ekitike as a possible replacement for Rasmus Hojlund, who's been linked with Inter Milan. Under Ruben Amorim, United are reshaping their squad. Newcastle's interest dates back to 2022 when Ekitike nearly joined before moving to Paris Saint-Germain. With Alexander Isak as their star striker, Ekitike's signing might depend on Isak's potential exit, as he's also a target for Liverpool and Arsenal. Chelsea were in the conversation but have taken a step back after signing Joao Pedro and Liam Delap. This leaves Liverpool, United, and Newcastle as the main contenders. Frankfurt are in no rush to sell, with Ekitike contracted and important for their Champions League campaign. They have signed Jonathan Burkardt as a potential replacement, showing foresight, but with no official announcement yet, they might even keep their star player. Hugo Ekitike favours a Premier League move, and Liverpool hold the edge due to their financial flexibility if Nunez departs. United's interest is serious but budget-dependent, while Newcastle's chances are dependent on Isak's future. As no formal bids have landed, Ekitike may start the season at Frankfurt, but Liverpool seem best placed to secure the deal before the window closes.
