How the Indo-Pacific got its name – and what China has to do with it
Indo-Pacific ' region – it likely won't be there.
Yet the Indo-Pacific is now central to how many countries think about strategy and security. It describes a region spanning two oceans and dozens of countries, encompassing much of the world's trade routes.
The Indo-Pacific did not emerge from the patterns of ancient trade, nor from long-standing cultural or civilisational ties.
Instead, the concept comes from the realms of political science and international relations. The term can be traced back to the work of
German political scientist and geographer Karl Haushofer – who was notably favoured by Adolf Hitler – in the 1920s. But it only truly gained traction in think tanks and foreign policy-setting departments in Washington and other Western capitals in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
It coincided with a shift in the global balance of power from a unipolar world – dominated by one superpower – to a multipolar one over the past decade or so.

Will US-Japan nuclear talks ease Tokyo's concern over a Taiwan Strait conflict?
Experts say the development may ease Japan's concern about supporting Taiwan's defence, but is set to upset Beijing. Japan's Kyodo News reported on the weekend that the two countries had been discussing a scenario in which the US military would use nuclear weapons in the event of a contingency in East Asia. 01:49 Hegseth reaffirms US-Japan alliance against 'aggressive Communist Chinese' Hegseth reaffirms US-Japan alliance against 'aggressive Communist Chinese' The report, citing anonymous sources, said such a move was 'a sign that they are seeking to strengthen the US nuclear umbrella, under which Japan is protected, amid intensifying military activity by China, North Korea and Russia'. Analysts say the latest step builds on the adoption in December of the first 'Guidelines for Extended Deterrence' between the allies, which stressed the need for better communication procedures about US nuclear weapons to defend Japan's security. 'Japan has been seeking stronger US commitments to enhance extended nuclear deterrence … The reported discussions on a potential scenario for the use of nuclear weapons reflect bilateral efforts to implement the guidelines,' said Zhao Tong, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. 'A strengthened US nuclear umbrella may ease Japan's concerns about supporting Taiwan's defence, but Japan's decisions on military involvement in a future Taiwan contingency will likely hinge more on perceived US commitment to Taiwan and broader regional power dynamics.'

Chinese semiconductor, AI firms form pact as Nvidia faces inquiry on H20 chip's security
The alliance reflected the growing efforts in the country's semiconductor industry and nascent AI sector to push forward Beijing's tech self-sufficiency agenda – covering computing hardware, software and services – amid US export restrictions on China and rising geopolitical tensions. The group's establishment comes amid an inquiry that the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) was conducting on Nvidia, which was recently given the green light by the Trump administration to resume shipments of its China-specific H20 AI processors The CAC said its inquiry was based on recent reports of 'serious security issues' involving Nvidia's processors and demands from US lawmakers to add tracking features to advanced chips. Moreover, US AI experts indicated that remote-control technologies related to Nvidia's chips have matured.
