Iraq: Turkey responded to the request to provide sufficient water in the summer

Iraqi News12-05-2025
Iraqi Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Diab, confirmed on Monday that Turkey has responded to Iraq's demands to ensure sufficient quantities of water in the summer.
Diab told Al Iraqiya News TV, followed by the Iraqi News Agency - INA, expressing his hope that "Ankara will fulfill its promises," noting the intention to hold talks with the Iranian side to agree on the release of sufficient quantities of water from the Karun River to prevent the advance of salt tides into the Shatt al-Arab."
"The water issue was present during PM Muhammed S. Al-Sudani's recent visit to Turkey. The visit was very important, and the Prime Minister emphasized this issue in several meetings, noting that the water issue is essential for Iraq, especially during seasons of scarcity and drought," he added.
He explained that "the Iraqi delegation stressed the importance of the Turkish side fulfilling its promises and ensuring that sufficient quantities of water reach Iraq in the summer. Turkish officials interacted with this issue, responded to our demands, and promised us good things."
During the visit, he met with the Turkish Minister of Agriculture and Water Affairs, as well as the Turkish President's representative on the water issue.
"There was an understanding of Iraqi demands from officials, and serious understandings were reached. We hope that the promises will be fulfilled and sufficient quantities will arrive in the summer, especially since there are indications that temperatures will be high," he highlighted.
Regarding the talks with the Iranian side, Diab explained that "in the coming days, there will be direct contact with Iranian officials regarding the water issue, especially the Karun River issue, as Iraq is demanding a reasonable flow of water to prevent the advance of salt tides into the Shatt al-Arab. In return, there are good flows from tributaries coming from Iran, especially the Sirwan River, which feeds the Darbandikhan Dam, as well as the tributaries that feed the Hemrin Dam."

IAEA urges Iran to restore nuclear cooperation

Shafaq News – Singapore City On Friday, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) called on Iran to restore cooperation with international inspectors and clarify critical aspects of its nuclear program. In a speech delivered at the S.R Nathan Fellowship Lecture in Singapore, Rafael Grossi highlighted Tehran's willingness to restart limited technical discussions with the IAEA, expressing hope that on-site monitoring by inspectors could resume before the end of the year. 'Iran has a number of facilities and activities that require clarity,' Grossi emphasized, stressing that 'Transparency is not optional. It is essential to rebuilding trust.' Also spoke about @IAEAorg 's work in cancer care, food safety, and nuclear safety, including IAEA's presence at ZNPP, work in Iran, and our role in safeguards and for the warm welcome and a great exchange with an engaged audience. — Rafael Mariano Grossi (@rafaelmgrossi) July 25, 2025 The IAEA chief also pressed Iran to address several other concerns, including precautionary measures at damaged facilities and the fate of roughly 400 kilograms of highly enriched uranium that remains unaccounted for following a US strike on Iranian nuclear infrastructure in June. These statements come as delegations from Iran, Britain, France, and Germany met in Istanbul on Friday for a new round of nuclear talks. Tehran described the meeting as a ''test of European realism'' and an opportunity to recalibrate positions on its nuclear program.

Iran, European Powers kick off nuclear talks in Istanbul

Shafaq News – Istanbul Delegations from Iran, Britain, France and Germany met in Istanbul on Friday for a new round of nuclear talks, with Tehran describing the meeting as a test of European realism and an opportunity to recalibrate positions on its nuclear programme. Though Europe's influence has waned in recent years, Iranian officials emphasize that dialogue with the three European signatories of the 2015 nuclear deal has continued, framing the talks as part of a longstanding, if intermittent, engagement. Tehran urged European capitals to reconsider what it termed 'unconstructive' positions, presenting the Istanbul meeting as a chance for the trio to revise their approach and revive diplomatic momentum. The talks represent the first diplomatic contact between Iran and Western powers since the recent 12-day conflict with Israel, during which Israel and the United States carried out multiple strikes against Iranian nuclear sites, including Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan. Earlier today, the Financial Times reported that some European governments were weighing a temporary pause before activating the 'snapback' mechanism — a process that would reinstate UN sanctions lifted under the 2015 accord. The move follows Iran's suspension of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Meanwhile Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reaffirmed Iran's nuclear policy remains unchanged, stressing that uranium enrichment continues as part of its declared peaceful programme. 'The world must understand that we remain firm and resolute in defending the Iranian people's right to peaceful nuclear energy, particularly enrichment,' he stressed.
