World's largest container ship MSC IRINA arrives at Vizhinjam International Seaport
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], June 9 (ANI): The world's largest container ship, MSC IRINA, on Monday arrived at the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The berthing process for the vessel has begun at the port.
MSC IRINA is recognised as the world's largest container vessel by TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit) capacity.
Vizhinjam International Seaport, which is managed by the Adani Group, was recently inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 2. The arrival of MSC IRINA marks a significant milestone for the newly opened port.
The MSC IRINA boasts an impressive capacity of 24,346 TEUs, making it a formidable player in global shipping. With a length of 399.9 metres and a width of 61.3 metres, the vessel is approximately four times longer than a standard FIFA-designated football field.
Explicitly designed to facilitate the transportation of large volumes of containers between Asia and Europe, the MSC IRINA is pivotal in enhancing trade routes and logistics efficiency.
This vessel will be visiting a South Asian port, highlighting Vizhinjam's capabilities in handling Ultra-Large Container Vessels (ULCVs).
The port has recently welcomed other Icon-class vessels, including MSC Turkiye and MSC Michel Cappellini, further establishing its reputation as a key hub in maritime trade.
The MSC IRINA was launched in March 2023 and embarked on its maiden voyage in April of the same year.
It sails under the Liberian flag and is engineered to stack containers up to 26 tiers high, offering unparalleled capacity in container stacking.
Notably, the MSC IRINA surpasses its predecessor, OOCL Spain, by a margin of 150 TEUs. In alignment with contemporary environmental standards, the vessel is equipped with energy-saving features that contribute to reducing carbon emissions by up to 4 per cent, significantly lowering its carbon footprint while maintaining operational efficiency.
The docking of the MSC IRINA at Vizhinjam International Seaport not only highlights the port's strategic importance in global shipping but also represents a leap forward in sustainable maritime practices, setting a benchmark for future developments in the industry. (ANI)

High AI maturity fuels long-term project success and trust: Gartner survey
New Delhi [India], June 30 (ANI): A recent survey by Gartner, Inc. indicates that organisations with high AI maturity are significantly more successful at sustaining their AI initiatives, with 45 per cent reporting that their AI projects remain operational for three years or more. The survey, conducted in Q4 2024 with 432 respondents across the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, India, and Japan, assessed AI maturity using Gartner's AI Maturity Model. High-maturity organisations, scoring an average of 4.2-4.5 on a 5-level scale, demonstrated that selecting AI projects based on business value and technical feasibility, coupled with robust governance and engineering practices, is key to long-term success. This stands in stark contrast to low-maturity organisations, where only 20 per cent achieve similar longevity. "Trust is one of the differentiators between success and failure for an AI or GenAI initiative," stated Birgi Tamersoy, Sr Director Analyst at Gartner. The survey found that in 57 per cent of high-maturity organisations, business units trust and are ready to utilise new AI solutions, compared to a mere 14 per cent in low-maturity organisations. "Building trust in AI and GenAI solutions fundamentally drives adoption, and since adoption is the first step in generating value, it significantly influences success," Tamersoy added. Additionally, the report also reveals that, despite varying maturity levels, data availability and quality remain prominent hurdles in AI implementation. The survey revealed that 34 per cent of leaders from low-maturity organisations and 29 per cent from high-maturity organisations identified these as top challenges. For high-maturity organisations, security threats were also a significant barrier (48 per cent), while low-maturity organisations frequently struggled with identifying the right use cases (37 per cent). A notable finding is the strong trend towards dedicated AI leadership in high-maturity organisations, with 91 per cent already having appointed such roles. These AI leaders are primarily focused on fostering AI innovation (65 per cent), delivering AI infrastructure (56 per cent), building AI organisations and teams (50 per cent), and designing AI architecture (48 per cent). Furthermore, nearly 60 per cent of leaders in high-maturity organisations reported centralising their AI strategy, governance, data, and infrastructure capabilities to enhance consistency and efficiency. India To Set Up Vaccine Hub In Ghana, Expand UPI In Namibia During PM Modi's Tour
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming five-nation tour, beginning on July 2, will see significant advancements in India's bilateral relations with African nations of Ghana and Namibia, including the establishment of a vaccine hub in Ghana and the expansion of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in Namibia. During a special briefing by the Ministry of External Affairs, Secretary of Economic Relations, Dammu Ravi, outlined the key agendas during the PM's visit to five countries- Ghana, Trinidad & Tobago, Argentina, Brazil and Namibia. The MEA Secretary highlighted the focus on vaccine development in Ghana. "Focus items of the visits will be agriculture, vaccine development, creating a vaccine hub in Ghana... Defence cooperation is also an agenda, along with discussion on critical minerals and Digital Public Infrastructure... MoUs will also be signed, with negotiations still underway on this." This move aims to bolster Ghana's healthcare infrastructure, particularly as the country undergoes economic restructuring under IMF conditionalities, and strengthen India's role in the matter, the Secretary stated. In Ghana, PM Modi will engage in delegation-level talks, have a one-on-one meeting with President John Dramani Mahama, address the parliament, and interact with the Indian community of approximately 15,000. The visit, early in Mahama's tenure following his landslide victory in January, aims to deepen bilateral ties, with economic cooperation dominating the agenda due to Ghana's USD 3 billion trade with India, largely driven by gold exports, and USD 2 billion in investments. "PM will be visiting Ghana on July 2nd and 3rd. This visit is happening after 30 years. The programme is quite hectic. On July 2nd, there will be a ceremonial welcome for the PM, there will be delegation-level talks during which bilateral relations will be reviewed and also to discuss various ways to strengthen the bilateral relations. PM will be having a one-on-one meeting with his counterpart and there will be a banquet dinner. The next day he will be addressing the parliament and also engaging with the Indian community, which is about 15000," Secretary Ravi said. "President John Dramani Mahama just assumed office after a landslide victory in January; that's why the visit carries importance, as the PM will be visiting Ghana early in his tenure. It will help in continuity and deepening the relation and further strengthening it... Both countries will be working to boost economic cooperation as Ghana is undergoing deep economic restructuring, especially as it has undergone IMF conditionalities... Economic agenda will dominate the talks... Bilateral trade between India and Ghana is about USD 3 billion in favour of Ghana because of gold. Investment is about USD 2 billion in both public and private investment," he said. As per a statement by the MEA, this will be Prime Minister's first ever bilateral visit to Ghana. During the visit, Prime Minister will hold talks with the President of Ghana to review the strong bilateral partnership and discuss further avenues to enhance it through economic, energy, and defence collaboration, and development cooperation partnership. This visit will reaffirm the shared commitment of the two countries to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen India's engagement with the ECOWAS [Economic Community of West African States] and the African Union. Duiring the final leg of his visit, at the invitation of the President of Namibia, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Prime Minister Modi will embark on a State Visit to Namibia on July 9. This will be the first visit of Prime Minister to Namibia, and the third ever Prime Ministerial visit from India to Namibia. During his visit, Prime Minister will hold bilateral talks with President Nandi-Ndaitwah and deliver an address at the Parliament of Namibia. The visit of Prime Minister is a reiteration of India's multi-faceted and deep-rooted historical ties with Namibia. MEA Secretary Dammu Ravi in the media briefing today said that Namibia will see the expansion of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) as agreements have been signed by the Central Bank of Namibia and NPCI International (NIPL), the international arm of the National Payments Corporation of India. "In the development cooperation area, capacity building, defence centre for excellence for IT - we are going to set it up. During the visit, the setting up of UPI with the country as a technology agreement has already been signed between the Central Bank of Namibia and NPCI... Namibia is a very resource-rich country, with many critical minerals... and discussions will be there on this also," the MEA Secretary Ravi stated. In Namibia, PM Modi will also pay homage to Dr Sam Nujoma, the first president of the African nation. "PM will be visiting Namibia for the last leg on July 9. This visit is coming after 27 years, and the current President, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, assumed office in March this year. The visit happening early in his tenure is important, as it will help to renew the relationship and deepen our economic engagement with Namibia... The programme will have a ceremonial welcome. PM will pay homage to Dr Sam Nujoma. There will be delegation-level discussions and one-on-one talks, and he will also address the parliament," he noted. Prime Minister Modi will embark on the five-country visit from July 2, during which he will attend the BRICS Summit in Brazil and hold meetings with leaders of Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina and Namibia to strengthen bilateral ties. He will start his five-nation visit with Ghana on July 2 and conclude his visit Namibia in the last leg on July 9. In the second leg of his visit, at the invitation of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Prime Minister Modi will pay an Official Visit to Trinidad & Tobago (T&T) from July 3-4. This will be his first visit to the country as Prime Minister and the first bilateral visit at the Prime Ministerial level to T&T since 1999. In the third leg of his visit, at the invitation of the President of Republic of Argentina, Javier Milei, Prime Minister will travel to Argentina on an Official Visit from July 04-05. Prime Minister will travel to Brazil from July 5-8 to attend the 17th BRICS Summit 2025 followed by a State Visit.

Pakistan, China, Bangladesh Push For New Bloc To Counter India, Replace SAARC
New Delhi: Pakistan and China are reportedly working together to establish a new regional grouping aimed at replacing the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), where India was once a key player. India Today, citing a report from The Express Tribune of Pakistan, stated that discussions between Islamabad and Beijing on forming this new bloc are already at an advanced stage. The report also noted that Bangladesh participated in a recent meeting held in Kunming, China, on June 19 to explore the creation of the proposed group. According to The Express Tribune, the primary goal of the Kunming meeting was to extend invitations to other South Asian nations, many of them former SAARC members, to join this emerging regional platform. The development follows a China-Pakistan-Afghanistan trilateral dialogue held in May, which focused on expanding the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and deepening cooperation with Afghanistan's Taliban-led regime. SAARC, established on December 8, 1985, in Dhaka, had originally included seven countries, with Afghanistan joining in 2007. The bloc has been largely inactive since 2016. While there hasn't been an official SAARC summit since 2014 in Kathmandu, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi did host a virtual SAARC leaders' conference in 2020 to propose a COVID-19 Emergency Fund, pledging $10 million from India. The 19th SAARC summit was scheduled for Islamabad in November 2016, but India withdrew following the Pakistan-sponsored terror attack in Uri that killed 17 Indian soldiers. Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Bhutan also pulled out, citing terrorism and regional instability, leading to the summit's cancellation and an indefinite pause in SAARC activity. The Express Tribune report claimed that both China and Pakistan believe a new regional framework is essential for enhancing integration and connectivity in South Asia. Countries such as Sri Lanka, the Maldives, and Afghanistan are also expected to be included in the proposed bloc. However, Bangladesh has dismissed any notion of a political alliance taking shape. M Touhid Hossain, foreign affairs adviser to the Bangladesh government, clarified that the Kunming meeting was a routine official-level discussion and 'not political in nature.' 'We are not forming any alliance,' Hossain said, adding, 'There was no element of formation of any alliance' during the discussions. According to diplomatic sources cited in the report, India may be extended an invitation to join the new group. However, given New Delhi's strategic differences, its participation is considered unlikely.
