Cameron Norrie was left taken aback when a reporter asked him if he is dating Emma Raducanu.
He was posed with the audacious inquest after his victory over Mattia Bellucci, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 6-3 secured him a spot in the round of 16. Norrie became the last British player standing in the men's singles competition at Wimbledon.
As Jack Draper's unexpected loss to Marin Cillic left Norrie as the sole British representative, he may have anticipated questions during his post-match conference about handling the pressure of being Britain's last hope at SW19 or his prospects of winning the Grand Slam.
However, he was caught off guard after being asked to confirm or deny whether he was currently dating Raducanu. The reporter started by complimenting Norrie, who was born in Johannesburg but has represented Great Britain since switching allegiance at 17.
He said: "Congratulations again on your win. Apart from everyone here loving tennis, some of the gossip has been about who Emma Raducanu is dating. Can I ask if you're dating her? Can we get to the bottom of this, please?"
Norrie, who was initially slouching, suddenly sat up straight, while his eyes widened in surprise as he processed the question. He responded with a simple: "Sorry?"

The journalist continued with his enquiry, asking: "We're trying to find out who is dating Emma Raducanu. It seems to be going round all the men's singles. I was just wondering if you are dating her, please?"

Norrie, baffled by the question, responded: "I'm not, no. You can ask her, though. You can ask her. I don't know," before quickly moving on.
Raducanu's Wimbledon journey concluded on Friday night as she exited the tournament following a defeat by World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka with scores of 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.
Speculation has been rife in recent times about Raducanu's personal life, particularly regarding her romantic connections.
The British tennis sensation, who shot to fame after winning the US Open in 2021, had been linked to fellow player Carlos Alcaraz, the reigning Wimbledon champion. However, she has quashed such gossip, clarifying that they are merely close friends.

Discussing her mixed doubles partner for next month's US Open, she remarked: "I've known him for years. Wimbledon 2021 was the first time I started getting to know him, and I had a good run there and then also again in the US Open in 2021.
"We have a good relationship still. He's obviously overtaken me a lot, but it's nice that we have that from a while ago. I think for all of us, we really kind of value those connections that we had from when we were young.

"When you become a bit more known or a bit more successful, you just find yourself reverting back to people you knew from a young age because you're like, 'That's a real genuine connection.' Because it becomes very busy and you have a lot more friends but the ones that you've known for a long time mean a lot more to you."
