Malayan Flour Mills boosts milling capacity by 33pct with new production line

KUALA LUMPUR: Malayan Flour Mills Bhd has commissioned a new flour milling line at its Lumut facility in Perak, boosting its domestic production capacity by 33 per cent to 2,400 tonnes per day.
The RM31.5 million investment is aimed at meeting rising consumer demand for flour-based products and strengthening food security in Malaysia, the company said in a statement today.
"We saw a rising and sustainable demand for flour in Malaysia in recent years as our growing population looks to flour as a carbohydrate alternative," said executive deputy chairman and managing director Teh Wee Chye.
He said the expansion would not only increase output but also improve operational efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
"The launch of our new milling line in Lumut is timely to tap into these growing opportunities," he added.
The new line features automated systems designed to reduce energy use and waste. It brings the group's total domestic capacity to 2,400 tonnes per day across its Lumut and Pasir Gudang plants.
The group's flour and grain trading segment recorded strong performance in the 2024 financial year, with adjusted profit after tax rising 83 per cent to RM126.1 million on stable revenue of RM3.1 billion. Sales tonnage grew by 23.5 per cent.
"With the expansion, we are well-positioned to explore further growth opportunities, including new product development and market penetration," Teh said.

Asean rises as a strategic fulcrum in changing world order

PUTRAJAYA, July 14 (Bernama): The 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting (AMM) and related meetings, which capped off successfully last Friday, undoubtedly strengthened Asean as a central player in regional diplomacy amid heightened geopolitical competition. Far from serving as a mere forum for dialogue, Asean has been increasingly seen as a key actor capable of shaping the future of regional stability and security, economic cooperation and in advancing multilateralism. As the host of the 58th AMM, Malaysia has demonstrated its diplomacy finesse, leading high-level discussions among Asean Foreign Ministers and with their external partners that included major powers such as the United States, China, Russia, the European Union, India and Japan. Universiti Sains Malaysia's Associate Professor of the School of Social Sciences, Dr Benny Teh Cheng Guan, said the involvement of major powers underscores Asean's critical role in regional diplomacy and navigating the evolving power dynamics of the Indo-Pacific. He said while Beijing wants to project itself as a reliable partner through consistent economic outreach, Washington has sought to reaffirm its commitment to the region by intensifying diplomatic engagement and balancing China's growing influence. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described his first engagement at the AMM as "extraordinary", as he stressed Washington's commitment to Asean as its primary diplomatic platform in Southeast Asia, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, meanwhile, emphasised the importance of Asean as both a priority in its neighbourhood diplomacy and a foundational partner in promoting a shared regional future. He also reaffirmed Beijing's commitment to upholding a rules-based global order - anchored in United Nations (UN) principles - and pledged to continue supporting Asean's centrality in addressing regional challenges. "They are reassuring Asean of their commitment to the region, while underscoring the organisation's central role in regional diplomacy amidst big power rivalry. "It shows Asean's strength in setting the agenda and providing an indispensable platform for Asean members to strategically engage their counterparts on a wide range of issues deemed important to the bloc," Teh told Bernama. Teh also welcomed increasing global interests towards Asean, noting them as a positive development that highlights the bloc's growing influence. He said Asean's appeal stems from its unique combination of economic dynamism, political stability and a socially tech-savvy population, making the region an attractive partner in a shifting global landscape. "However, Asean should exercise caution to ensure any partnership expansion strengthens rather than burdens the bloc," he said. Teh added that the bloc must take proactive steps to reinforce its relevance, strengthen internal cooperation, and defend multilateral principles. "Asean should work closely with its dialogue partners to uphold a rules-based international order and defend multilateral norms, strengthen inter-ASEAN trade cooperation and collectively reject protectionism as well as push for reforms to deepen integration and diversify trade flows," he said. The four-day event, held under Malaysia's Asean Chairmanship 2025 with theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability', witnessed important decisions that underscored the bloc's deep-rooted principle of unity, neutrality, and inclusivity. Among the highlights was the notable progress made on the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Treaty. Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said China will sign the Protocol of the SEANWFZ without reservation, as soon as all the documentation is ready. He also revealed that 'two to three' nuclear-weapon states (NWS) have also contacted Malaysia, as this year's Asean Chair, to resume earlier discussions on the treaty. On Myanmar, the AMM has reasserted the call for stakeholders to cease hostilities and violence, and engage in inclusive dialogue to de-escalate the ongoing crisis as precondition to holding elections. In line with this, Mohamad said he plans to go Myanmar in September to present the junta with a 'wishlist' aimed at restoring peace and democracy in the country. The AMM meeting reiterated support for Timor-Leste full accession to the bloc, which is expected to be announced in October. In conjunction with the meeting, Malaysia also co-hosted the Fourth Ministerial Conference on Cooperation among East Asian Countries for Palestinian Development (CEAPAD IV) with Japan and Palestine on reconstruction in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Amid the broader agenda, a series of bilateral and trilateral meetings also took place between allies and rivals alike. One of the most closely watched meetings was between Rubio and Wang, marking their first in-person engagement since the former's appointment in January. Separately, Rubio also held a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, with discussions centred on global situations - including the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, as well as on the readiness of Moscow and Washington to resume their high-level cooperation. These diplomatic interactions were not only significant, but also deeply symbolic - reflecting Asean and Malaysia's vital role as conveners of dialogue in a time of global tensions. The ministerial-level meetings may have concluded, but diplomatic efforts continue in full swing behind the scenes, laying the groundwork for the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits that are taking place in October. - Bernama

Malaysia's wholesale, retail trade sales up 4.4pct to RM154.3bil in May: DOSM

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's wholesale and retail trade registered a total sales of RM154.3 billion in May 2025, reflecting a 4.4 per cent growth year-on-year (y-o-y), according to the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM). In a statement today, its chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the growth was primarily supported by the performance of the retail and wholesale trade sub-sectors. "The retail trade sub-sector registered RM67.1 billion in sales, an increase of RM3.1 billion or 4.9 per cent y-o-y. "The wholesale trade sub-sector recorded RM68.2 billion, up RM3.1 billion or 4.7 per cent y-o-y, reflecting steady business activity across supply chains," he said. May's online retail sales showed an increase, with the index rising by 2.2 per cent y-o-y, he said. "However, after seasonal adjustment, the index recorded a month-on-month decline of negative 3.4 per cent," he said. In terms of volume index, he said wholesale and retail trade posted a higher y-o-y increase at 4.1 per cent, driven by the wholesale trade sub-sector, which rose by 5.8 per cent, followed by retail trade with a 3.7 per cent increase. Complementing the trade growth, Mohd Uzir said Malaysia's digital payment transactions recorded a strong y-o-y gain in May 2025. "E-money transactions surged by 70.2 per cent y-o-y to RM21.5 billion, reflecting heightened adoption of digital payments. "Real-time retail payments platform transactions amounted to RM289.4 billion, underscoring the growing demand for instantaneous payment solutions. "Meanwhile, financial process exchange transactions expanded by 21.1 per cent to RM39.2 billion, driven by increased online banking activity," he said. The chief statistician said credit card usage remained stable at RM18.7 billion, while debit card transactions registered an eight per cent growth to RM14.1 billion. "Collectively, these trends highlight the sustained expansion of digital payment channels, in line with evolving consumer preferences and the broader digitalisation of Malaysia's payment infrastructure," he added.

SDB's CSR Mid Valley Megamall retail store set to further empower special needs community

SELANGOR Dredging Bhd's (SDB) flagship corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, One-Two-Boost (OTB), has opened its first physical retail outlet at Mid Valley Megamall. It marks a major milestone in its mission to empower individuals with special needs through meaningful employment and inclusive community engagement. The store's official launch was officiated by Pathmanathan Nalasamy (left on main image) who is the director of the Development of Persons with Disabilities Department under the Department of Social Welfare Malaysia. 'The inclusion of persons with disabilities must be a shared responsibility. While the government continues to introduce policies and programmes to support their integration, it is heartening to see private sector leaders like SDB stepping up in meaningful ways,' he praised. 'Through strong public-private collaboration, we continue to build a society that values diversity, promotes dignity and ensures that no one is left behind in Malaysia's development journey.' Conceived and spearheaded by SDB managing director Teh Lip Kim herself, OTB was born out of a deeply personal desire to support and provide employment for individuals with special needs. 'What started as a small initiative has grown beyond what I imagined,' recalled Teh (second from right on main image). 'With this store, we aim to amplify OTB's true purpose – not just hy offering jobs – but raising awareness and building understanding between the special needs community and the public.' Initially launched as an online venture, OTB's expansion into a physical store reflects growing public support for its mission and the broader appeal of its holistic wellness offerings. The Mid Valley Megamall outlet showcases over 50 herbal-based products which are developed in collaboration with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) physicians. These include herbal drinks, immunity-boosting soups, balms and other products promoting holistic well-being. More than just a retail space, the store serves as a platform for awareness, inclusion and meaningful interaction by bridging the gap between the special needs community and the wider public. Pathmanathan and Teh also expressed their gratitude to Mid Valley Megamall for supporting OTB's mission by providing a prominent platform within one of Malaysia's most visited shopping destinations. 'The impact of this store is set to be immense,' envisages Teh. 'It serves as a venue where this community can gain confidence and independence, and where every customer encounter becomes a chance to break down stigma.' Teh added that the store creates a valuable space for the special needs team to gain exposure and develop interpersonal skills while offering the public an opportunity to engage meaningfully. 'What we need is more empathy, more kindness and above all, more hope,' she stressed. 'Each product on our shelves represents not just care and craftsmanship, but also courage – the courage of this community to show up, to grow and to be seen. 'Our hope is that every customer who walks through our doors leaves not only with something good for their body but something uplifting for the heart.'
