Gray challenges Hibs to keep momentum and embrace Europa League challenge
Hibs head coach David Gray is excited about the team's Europa League challenge and wants his side to carry their momentum from last season into the new campaign.
A strong second half to the season saw the Leith side climb to a third-place finish in the Premiership after a difficult start.
That achievement looked set to guarantee group stage football in Europe in either the Europa League or at worst the Conference League but Aberdeen's surprise Scottish Cup final triumph over Celtic meant the Dons took the Europe League play-off spot and left Hibs facing three knock-out ties to reach the League Phase.
The Easter Road club have been drawn to face Danish side Midtjylland in the second qualifying round next month and with pre-season training now underway, Gray says they can look forward to the tie.
'Everyone's come back with a spring in their step, as you'd expect off the back of last season,' he said, while speaking at the club's annual Ron Gordon Football Festival. 'And it's just trying to build on that momentum from last year.'
Gray admitted it was difficult seeing Aberdeen's cup success make his own qualifying task more difficult but said the club had prepared for all scenarios and he didn't want it to detract in any way from how well his side had done in reaching Europe.
'We now know exactly what's happening,' he said. You know, you've got the added bonus of knowing exactly who your opponent is well in advance, so you can do all your work and make sure you're ready for that.
'Everyone will have their pre-season friendlies getting in place to try and get the players up to speed as quickly as you can.
'But it's certainly a really good one to look forward to.
'Something that's worked really well for us as a group was taking one game at a time, and I know that was where we found ourself last year.
'But clearly, because it is a knockout stage at this point, that is the way you're gonna have to look at it.
'There's no better one you start with. It's a brilliant opportunity. They're a real top side.
'We know that, but that is the reward for finishing third. That's the reward for coming to this football club and being successful and qualifying for European competitions, that you get the opportunity to test yourself against a really good side.
'The players I'm sure are going to be looking forward to, because I certainly am.'
Gray also anticipates an exciting Premiership season and thinks the new faces in the league will bring a freshness and also a lot of competiveness.
'We had a fantastic season, finished third, and rightly so,' he said.
'The league does not lie by the end of the season, but the challenge now for myself, for the staff, for the players, is to make sure we keep improving.
'Because the league is so tough, we know that. And the teams coming up are going to add to that.
'You've obviously seen there's new managers in place that are going to want to implement their own styles as well. So it's going to be really competitive.
'It always is, but our challenge is, can we keep improving as a group?'

Manchester United are refusing to overpay for their biggest transfer targets this summer, which has reportedly led to a move for Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo breaking down Manchester United have reportedly given up in their pursuit of Antoine Semenyo - who was once dubbed a 'younger version' of Mohamed Salah - after refusing to meet Bournemouth 's asking price. Having already wrapped up the £62.5million signing of Matheus Cunha to kickstart their summer transfer activity, United are in the market for a more multi-functional forward. Fitting that description is Semenyo, though the move now appears to have crumbled. The Ghanaian winger's impressive 13 goals and seven assists this season sparked United's interest, with talkSPORT claiming the player held talks with the club over a potential Old Trafford move. But the same performances that caught United's attention have prompted Bournemouth to set the 25-year-old's transfer value at a whopping £70m. That figure is part of a wider trend seen this summer, where Premier League clubs are charging more for their players as the traditional big clubs shift their attention to signing players with experience in England's top flight. The i Paper reports that, in addition to United, Spurs showed the most interest in Semenyo, having stayed in contact with the Cherries after making an initial enquiry last week. But there's an increasing belief he will stay at Bournemouth, with the Red Devils, Spurs and Newcastle all unwilling to meet their hefty asking price after he recently agreed a new four-year deal with the club. United's reluctance to pay so much is a clear indication of their approach to the summer transfer window, where they are under financial constraints and will not splurge as recklessly as they have done in the past. For example, Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo has emerged as Ruben Amorim's top target over Semenyo, but the Red Devils only want him for a reasonable fee. Despite the Cameroonian's desire to join the Red Devils, United are yet to agree a deal with Brentford, who rejected a second bid of £55 million plus £7.5 million in bonuses for the 25-year-old. The Bees want at least the same fee United paid Wolves for Cunha up-front and it is still unclear whether the Red Devils will pay it. After missing out on European football next season, Amorim's transfer budget this summer is not as big as it might have been if he had won the Europa League final in May. However, United's latest financial results for the first three months of 2025 revealed a more encouraging picture despite Sir Jim Ratcliffe earlier this year suggesting the club was on course to run out of money by Christmas. It's understood that United will therefore look to complete the signing of Mbeumo to go alongside Cunha with their current finances. But they will need to sell the likes of Tyrell Malacia, Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony before making any further additions beyond Mbeumo. If United bank the fees they are looking for for the aforementioned players, they will secure somewhere in the region of £170m. It is not expected that Amorim will sign a third forward, with those funds set to be invested in other areas of the pitch. That will mean missing out on Semenyo, who, former United striker Michael Owen, encouraged Liverpool to buy back in March as a replacement for Salah, whose future at the time was still unclear. Owen claimed the versatile winger could be a suitable heir to the Egyptian at Anfield, saying: 'I like Antoine Semenyo at Bournemouth, who plays in the same position as Salah. I like him, a younger version, but definitely got energy, scoring capabilities and a good player.' He added: 'That being said, you can't replace Mo Salah. I mean if you said Mo Salah and Darwin Nunez went and Alexander Isak and Antoine Semenyo came then I don't think it's the worst swap in the world if we're playing fantasy football here, but realistically Liverpool want to keep hold of their best players and Mo Salah is their best player so hopefully he doesn't leave." Semenyo now looks set to stay at Bournemouth unless the club drop their valuation or the player tries to force a move through.

And Cormack has promised to keep Aberdeen at the forefront of Scottish game after the 49ers Enterprises' £20m investment in Rangers and Tony Bloom's £10m boost for Hearts. Cormack beamed: 'We continue to make good progress towards achieving long-term financial sustainability of the club with record season ticket sales, AberDNA memberships and markedly increased commercial and retail revenues. 'Combined with the additional funds generated, successful player trading is integral to this goal and remains a major factor in our recruitment. 'We have spent the last 12 months studying the market and refining our strategy in this area. It's understood Cormack has personally put in £4m on the new sum with Crotty also investing heavily in the plan. The £8m will mainly be used for capital projects at Cormack Park, including the planned construction of a new full-sized indoor arena - with work to start in the New Year. 'We're incredibly grateful to our investors for the new funds, which will provide a significant portion of the capital required for these improvements at Cormack Park and our stadium, while also being able to continue to invest in the squad and the football operation. 'Our training facility at Cormack Park is fantastic, and the addition of a full-sized, indoor arena and additional operational space will take it to a whole new level, opening new possibilities for our men's, women's, academy and community programmes.
