The singles chart: my secret 75-song playlist for every man I've been with

The Guardian11-02-2025
The first time I kissed a boy I was 19 years old. I was in the basement of a dank student bar at university. Our eyes met across the dancefloor, we smiled at each other, and he came over. He told me his name was Sean, he was studying commerce and then put his hands on my waist. Just as he leaned in to kiss me the beat dropped on the final chorus of Rihanna's We Found Love.
The next morning, I fired up my iPod Touch, created a nameless playlist and added We Found Love. I was still so deliriously excited by what had happened with Sean that I wanted something to preserve that moment. The song turned out to be all that I would get from Sean – he told me after one date I wasn't really his type.
Crushed by his rejection, I did what any other sensible person would do: sought out validation from another man. I took a guy home from a country-themed club night and he soon became the second song on the playlist: Barefoot Blue Jean Night by Jake Owen. By the end of that school year, I'd added five more songs, and a personal tradition was born.
What started as a silly teenage impulse to capture the excitement of finally being myself has slowly transformed into a musical diary of my life for the last 14 years. Every time I meet a guy, there is a part of me that starts wondering what song he will become. Will he be the latest pop hit that plays while sharing our first drink, or a slow classic barely audible in a shop? A track from an artist we saw live together? Or something completely unexpected? It's a compulsive game I play that they have no idea they've signed up for.
Now called Remind Me, the playlist includes 75 songs and a running time of just under six hours. Perhaps unsurprisingly for a gay man born in the 90s, most of the songs are by female pop divas whose music I have worshipped for most of my life. Mariah Carey makes no less than seven appearances on the playlist – the most of any artist – alongside Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Beyoncé, Céline Dion and Lady Gaga.
I should clarify that this is not a playlist of songs I've had sex to. While some of them were played while clothes were off, others were not. The only rule for adding a track is that, for whatever arbitrary or emotional reason, it has to bring me back to being with that particular guy. Music has helped me memorialise and give meaning to even the most ephemeral romances. While I don't remember every guy's name, when I play 'his' song I can see his face and where I was when the song played.
The fun process of compiling this playlist has given me a unique relationship to certain songs and artists. When most people hear Elton John's 1997 version of Candle In the Wind, they think of Lady Diana's death. Me? A threesome I had with a couple in south London. I was in a taxi on the way to meet them and the driver put it on. I couldn't help but laugh at what an absurd song it was to hear at that moment. Since then, I've never been able to listen to it with a straight face.
Up until now, no one in my life has known this playlist exists. It's not that I'm ashamed of it. I grew up in a generation that became accustomed to broadcasting every experience for collective consumption and judgment. I wanted something that was for my eyes and ears alone. To anyone else, the playlist would look like a haphazard collection of songs that vaguely tracks pop music trends over the last decade. But for me, the playlist is precious, veering on sacred, because it's the most honest recording I have of my life.
Part of what makes exposing this part of my life so scary is that it's also the story of my perpetual singledom. When I started the playlist, Spotify hadn't even launched. I was either buying singles on iTunes or uploading tracks from CDs to make my compilation come to life. I honestly didn't think I'd still be adding songs at age 33. Naively, I assumed by now I'd have met the great love of my life that all pop culture and romcoms I'd grown up with had promised me. The final song would have been added.
Every year in December I put the playlist on shuffle to reminisce about the new additions and old favourites. Each song evokes memories and feelings like I'm flicking through pictures in a scrapbook. Amid a sea of the short-lived flings, this playlist has become a constant; providing me with the commitment and security I'd hoped to find in a long-term relationship. Every track is also a melodic reminder that there is no shame in craving intimacy, or finding it outside a romantic relationship.
In many ways, this playlist epitomises the role music has played in my life. Music as a surrogate lover that holds me up and lets me be myself. So to give it up or to lose the playlist would mean doing away with part of who I am. I can't do that. I'm still enjoying discovering which song – and which person – might come next.

Diddy's ex Gina Huynh makes surprise plea for his release after dropping out of trial despite claim he ‘stomped on her'

SEAN 'Diddy' Combs' ex-girlfriend has bizarrely pleaded with a judge to release him despite once claiming he had 'stomped' on her. Virginia - 'Gina' - Huynh had initially been anonymously referred to as 'Victim-3' in the disgraced music mogul's sex trafficking trial. 6 6 She was supposed to testify against Combs in his criminal case, reported CNN. But, Gina "mysteriously dropped out" days before the rapper's trial began, it added. It has now transpired that she has asked - via Combs' defense team - for Judge Arun Subramanian to show her ex leniency during the star's sentencing. This is despite her once claiming he had stomped on her stomach, and dragged her by the hair. In a surprise letter to the judge, Gina has pleaded for Combs to be set free from jail. She also stated that she does not believe Combs is a danger to the community. It's the first time "Victim-3" has identified herself by name. According to court documents cited by Page Six, Gina described her ex as a committed family man 'who has not been violent in many years.' She claimed, 'To my knowledge, [Combs] has not been violent for many years, and he has been committed to being a father first. 'Our relationship, like many, was not always perfect, we experienced ups and downs, and mistakes were made. Diddy trial witness 'The Punisher' reveals battle against 'storm of negativity' after taking part in freak-offs "But he was willing to acknowledge his mistakes and make better decisions in the future.' Gina's letter also claimed her ex, 'embodied an energy of love, patience and gentleness that was markedly different from his past behavior' by the time their troubled relationship ended. 'I am writing because I do not view Mr. Combs as a danger to me or to the community,' she said, while stressing that it was his "first criminal case." 'He has substantial ties to his family and community, including children who depend on him for emotional and financial support,' she added. 'I want to assure the Court that if released, I believe Mr. Combs will adhere to all conditions imposed and will not jeopardize his freedom or the well-being of his family.' Her plea was included as an exhibit in the defense's latest filing ahead of the singer 's sentencing in his federal criminal case on October 3. VIOLENCE However, her endorsement has come as a surprise as she had previously claimed Combs had punched her in the head during their five-year relationship. Her allegations were aired during a bombshell 2019 interview with controversial celebrity gossip blogger LaTasha Kebe, known as Tasha K - who was once involved in a defamation lawsuit with Cardi B. Gina alleged during her interview with the blogger, "He stomped on my stomach really hard — like, took the wind out of my breath. 'I couldn't breathe. He kept hitting me. I was pleading to him, 'Can you just stop? I can't breathe.'' She also alleged the rapper then grabbed her by the hair and was 'punching' the back of her head. Gina claimed she defended herself by fighting back as she had had 'enough of his s**t.' She alleged, "He was mentally, emotionally and physically abusing me." DROPPED OUT OF TRIAL Diddy's ex was initially part of the prosecution's case against Combs, and was to have been a key witness. She was expected to testify alongside his other ex-girlfriends, Cassie - the R&B singer whose real name is Casandra Ventura - and Jane Doe, who testified under a pseudonym. However, prosecutors had to tell the jury in New York that 'Victim-3 may not show up' after they lost contact with Gina and her attorney. Gina had claimed to Tasha K that Combs, "would always compare me to Cassie and tell me that I'm the bad one, she's a good one." Cassie and Jane told the court during the star's trial that he forced them into drug-fueled sex marathons they called 'freak-offs' and 'hotel nights." The jury deliberating at his sex trafficking trial heard testimony from 34 witnesses over seven weeks at Manhattan's Federal Court. APPLES THROWN This included testimony from Combs' ex-employees, such as his former assistant, George Kaplan, who testified that he witnessed at least three alleged instances of violence. He alleged that his saw his former boss throw apples at a woman named Gina in 2015. Kaplan said it was "the last straw for me." ABC News reported during the trial that Kaplan told the court that in the fall of 2015 he saw a "very angry" Combs. He alleged that he saw the singer "throwing these green apples that lived in a decorative vessel" in the entryway of his Miami home. 6 6 The apples were allegedly aimed "at another girlfriend" of Combs' who, Kaplan told the court, was "trying to shield herself with her arms." In 2016, security cameras captured Combs hitting, kicking and dragging Cassie as she left his room at the Intercontinental Hotel in Los Angeles. The horrific video was shown repeatedly throughout his trial. VERDICT In early July, Combs, 55, was acquitted of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking charges carrying potential life prison terms. But, he was convicted of two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution for arranging for girlfriends and male sex workers to travel to engage in sexual encounters that he filmed. Each prostitution-related charge carries a potential maximum 10 years in prison. After hearing the verdict, Combs held his hands up in a prayer motion, looking at the jury and hugging his defense lawyer Teny Geragos. Prosecutors had alleged the Bad Boy Records founder used physical violence, threats, and the resources of his business empire to coerce two former girlfriends to participate in days-long, drug-fueled sexual performances with male sex workers sometimes called "freak-offs." Combs pleaded not guilty, and his lawyers argued his two girlfriends took part willingly in the encounters. SENTENCING The Associated Press reported that prosecutors said they now expect Combs could face a prison sentence 'substantially higher' than the four to five years they once thought he was likely to face. In a submission to the Manhattan federal court last Thursday, they also opposed his request to be released on $50 million bail while he awaits sentencing. Combs' lawyers have said they believe the guidelines, if properly calculated, will call for 21 to 27 months in prison. 6

Pregnant Rihanna covers her bump in a baggy sweatshirt as she heads for LA dinner amid plans to 'tour again after cancelling London dates'

Rihanna cut a casual figure as she stepped out at Giorgio Baldi in Los Angeles ' Santa Monica on Sunday evening as she prepares to welcome her third child. The pregnant singer, 37, covered her blossoming baby bump in a loose-fitting grey sweatshirt, which was teamed with a pair of baggy blue jeans. In a stylish touch, Rihanna added a white faux fur shawl to her ensemble, while also sporting a selection of gold jewellery to accessorise. The Barbadian star wore her black locks in loose waves with two braids, enhancing her pretty features with a bronze pallet of make-up. The appearance comes as she is reportedly set to tour again after cancelling a string of dates in London which were meant to take place this summer. Rihanna, who is expecting her next baby with the father of her two other children ASAP Rocky, has now rearranged the shows. According to reports, she had been rumoured to be planning a six-concert residency in London in July to mark her return to music. It was later claimed that Rihanna pulled out of the proposed gigs at West Ham's stadium in a secret meeting, just before they were set to be publicly confirmed. However, the tour is now set to be back on for 2026, according to The Sun, which will mark her first UK shows since 2016. A source told the newspaper: 'Rihanna and her team are now confident they can make it work for next year.' They added: 'The dates will also coincide with the tenth anniversary of [her last album] Anti, and fans can expect to hear her new music too. 'Rihanna might be pregnant with her third baby but she is the ultimate working mum and has the support of her partner ASAP Rocky.' Daily Mail has contacted Rihanna's representatives for comment. Music insiders previously claimed to The Telegraph that Rihanna was lining up shows at London Stadium for July 4 and 5, with other possible concerts set for July 8, 9, 11 and 12. A second source told the publication that her promoters were 'holding' the arena - formerly the Olympic Stadium - for her, with preparations in the advance planning stages. The run of concerts would've been Rihanna's first in almost a decade, after the release of her last album Anti in 2016. The Umbrella hitmaker finally confirmed her ninth album was on its way in an interview with Harper's Bazaar in February. She sent fans wild as she teased she's 'cracked the code' on her 'next body of work' and that it 'feels right.' Rihanna told the outlet: 'This time away from from music needs to count for the next thing everyone hears. It has to matter. I have to show them it was worth the wait.' The nine-time Grammy winner revealed her pregnancy news when she showed off her baby bump at the Met Gala back in May. Just last week, she dished on motherhood as she is expecting her third baby. She told Access Hollywood that her 'two princes' RZA and Riot have a ton of energy that wear her out when she attended the Smurfs premiere in Los Angeles. She is the voice actor for Smurfette in the new animated musical-comedy film and brought along her kids for the red carpet event ahead of the movie's release. It comes just days after the singer attended her father's funeral in her native country of Barbados - after he passed away at the age of 70 on May 30 following a battle with pancreatic cancer and accompanying complications. During an interview with Extra at the Smurfs premiere, she opened up about her little ones joining her at the screening. 'I'm excited for tonight. Tonight is going to be fun. We get to watch the movie together for the first time. I get to watch it in its full completion. So, that should be interesting,' she expressed.

Diddy receives unlikely letter of support from prosecutor's MIA star witness in bid to escape prison time

Sean ' Diddy ' Combs has received support from an unlikely ally in his fight to escape lengthy prison time as one of his alleged victims urged a judge to free him. The disgraced music mogul, who was recently acquitted of serious sex trafficking and racketeering charges, still faces up to 10 years behind bars after he was convicted of two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. But his ex-girlfriend Gina Huynh, who was identified as 'Victim Number 3' and was initially expected to testify against him before going MIA at his trial, has penned a letter to the court supporting Diddy's bid for bail. 'I do not view Mr Combs as a danger to me or the community,' she wrote in the letter, seen by the Daily Mail. 'To my knowledge, he has not been violent for many years and he has been committed to being a father first.' Huynh wrote in her supporting letter that by the time she and Diddy had ended their relationship, he 'embodied an energy of love, patience and gentleness that was markedly different from his past behavior.' 'Our relationship, like many, was not always perfect,' she noted. 'We experienced ups and downs, and mistakes were made, but he was willing to acknowledge his mistakes and make better decisions in the future. 'Over the years that followed, he made visible efforts to become a better person and to address the harm he had caused.' Huynh mysteriously went MIA during his high profile trial, taking no part in it despite earlier expectations she would act as a star witness for the prosecution. Prosecutors told the judge they were unable to get in touch with 'Victim 3' when she was due to appear. Her testimony was supposed to bolster the prosecution's case against the Diddy and support the racketeering and sex-trafficking charges he was acquitted of. Jurors ultimately cleared him of three charges, two of which carried a mandatory 15 years and a maximum of life. The day before the verdict was handed down, TMZ asked Huynh if the thought of a potential acquittal made her fear for her life. 'He never did anything dangerous to me. I'm not scared,' she said, contradicting previous claims she had been the victim of abuse. In 2019, she claimed the mogul once 'stomped' on her stomach and repeatedly punched her in the head during one disturbing encounter. 'He stomped on my stomach really hard — like, took the wind out of my breath,' Gina said in her interview with controversial blogger Tasha K. 'I couldn't breathe. He kept hitting me. I was pleading to him, "Can you just stop? I can't breathe."' Huynh claimed at the time that Diddy had punched her in the head at other times, and her hair would cover signs of her injuries. 'He was mentally, emotionally and physically abusing me,' she also claimed. 'He would always compare me to Cassie and tell me that I'm the bad one, she's a good one.' The pair met in 2013 in Las Vegas. Their romance began a year later and, according to Huynh, they dated for five years. Diddy is waiting to learn his fate for the charges he was convicted of. He was found guilty of flying people around the country, including his girlfriends and male sex workers, to engage in sexual encounters, a felony violation of the federal Mann Act. His defense lawyers said that under federal sentencing guidelines, he would likely face about two years in prison. Prosecutors, citing Diddy's violence and other factors, said the guidelines would call for at least four to five years. Locked up since his September arrest, Diddy has already served nine months. 'We fight on and we're going to win,' Agnifilo said. 'And we're not going to stop until he walks out of prison a free man to his family.'
