Other major improvements include resurfacing of the road and repairs to damaged guardrails following the June 9 incident, according to the Malay daily.
A 60km survey from Gerik town in Perak to the crash site in Banun, near Tasik Banding, revealed ongoing infrastructure works, particularly the installation of solar lights at sharp bends and narrow sections of the highway.
A Gerik resident, who wished to be known only as Sue, 39, told Utusan Malaysia she welcomed the upgrades as a preventive step to avoid similar tragedies.
'This gives drivers more confidence at night. JRTB hasn't seen improvements like this in a long time and was quite neglected. It's encouraging for those of us who frequently travel to Jeli,' she reportedly said.
Built during the communist insurgency in the 1970s, the Gerik-Jeli stretch cuts through dense forest, home to wild elephants and the Malayan tiger.
Another resident, Mohd Fadzil Abdul Aziz, 48, praised the government and the Public Works Ministry for responding swiftly, telling Utusan Malaysia that the upgrades have made a noticeable difference.
'Now the JRTB is well lit and much easier for road users. There's even a viral video showing elephants visible under the solar lights,' he said.

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : A police investigation into claims by a PKR leader on unaudited contributions to a division found that the issue revolved around internal auditing, the home minister said. Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said it was also related to issues with the administration of the party. He said this in a written parliamentary reply to Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas), who wanted an update on an investigation into a viral video clip featuring a man believed to be the Wangsa Maju PKR division chief. In May, a video, which surfaced on several social media platforms, appears to show Wangsa Maju division chief Lai Chen Heng commenting on financial contributions to the division from a prominent businessman. He allegedly referred to them as 'unaudited funds' associated with a senior political leader. But Lai maintained that the clip had been selectively edited and circulated to smear his image. In April, he had denied claims that the division's 2024 financial statements had been manipulated. He said such claims were baseless and politically motivated, adding that the financial report presented during the division's annual general meeting on March 1 did not receive any objections.

Govt moots purchase of 16 new buses for FRU after fatal crash

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The home ministry has proposed the procurement of 16 new buses with a capacity of 44 passengers each for the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) following the crash in May that claimed the lives of nine FRU personnel. Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the buses would be used by the FRU for general use and long-distance travel. In a written parliamentary reply, Saifuddin said the ministry proposed that funds be allocated to procure the buses under the 13th Malaysia Plan. He also said the ministry has proposed customising existing FRU vehicles to ensure they fit the set safety specifications, as well as the installation of additional safety components like dash cameras. 'The police are holding discussions with various stakeholders concerning improvements to SOPs (involving the transportation of FRU personnel). 'The date of implementation of the new SOPs will be set once the procedures are finalised and approved by the police force's leadership,' he said. Those who died were S Perumal, 44, Roslan Abd Rahim, 46, Pozli Jaudin, 41, Nurit Pandak, 34, Amiruddin Zabri, 38, Hilmi Azlan, 38, Akmal Muhamad, 35, Damarrulan Abdul Latif, 33, and Akmal Wafi Annuar, 28. The 45-year-old lorry driver, Rudi Zulkarnain Mat Radi, was charged on May 16 with nine counts of causing death by reckless driving. He claimed trial to all the charges. A preliminary report by the task force investigating the crash also found that the tipper lorry was carrying 40,960kg of gravel, exceeding the permitted limit of 24,000kg by 70.67%.
