Italy cracks down on violence against referees

ROME - Referees in Italy will now receive the same legal protection as police officers and other public officials, Sports Minister Andrea Abodi said, to help curb a rise in cases of assault in sports such as soccer.
A change to the penal code will mean much tougher penalties, include potentially jail, for acts of violence against match officials, including pushing, hitting, or threatening. The move follows months of discussions between the government and the Italian Soccer Referees Association.
The law, part of a decree approved by the Italian government late on Friday, extends protection to all officials responsible for ensuring sporting fixtures are conducted fairly.
Abuse towards match officials at all levels of Italian soccer has become a growing concern. In December, Serie A referees highlighted the issue by wearing black smudges on their cheeks during matches as a symbol of protest.
In one notorious example last season, 19-year-old referee Diego Alfonzetti was attacked when he took charge of a youth match in Sicily.
Alfonzetti was invited on to the pitch alongside the match officials before the Lazio-Rome Serie A derby in April as an act of solidarity.
"Sport is loyalty and sharing. Those who do not accept it are warned: from tomorrow violent behaviour and aggression against referees will be punished without delay, even with prison," said Senator Andrea Ostellari, a junior justice minister. REUTERS

The centre-back, who also enjoyed successful spells at Paris St Germain and Chelsea, praised his team's outstanding performance in overcoming the Champions League runners-up. "This is a very important result for us. We knew it wasn't going to be an easy game. They played in the Champions League final less than a month ago," Silva added. "Today we played an incredible match. It had to be this way, there was no other way to achieve it. "We were always together, defensively we played an excellent match. They also made it difficult for us, perhaps we lacked something in defence, but that's understandable against an opponent like this."

Real boosted by Mbappe's return for Juventus clash at Club World Cup
MIAMI - Kylian Mbappe looks set to make his Club World Cup debut when his Real Madrid side face Juventus in the last 16 at the Hard Rock Stadium on Tuesday, in a major boost for the 15-time European champions. "It's a big possibility," Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso told a press conference on Monday when asked if the France forward, who missed all three group matches with acute gastroenteritis, would feature. Mbappe's return comes as Real Madrid look to build on a squad boosted by the recoveries of Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao. "Both Dani and Eder are coming back after a long recovery. It's an advantage for them and the whole team to feel they're close and involved," Alonso said. 'At this decisive stage, everyone - starters and those supporting - has an important role.' Alonso, who took over earlier this month, said the team's priority was forging a collective identity. "We want a team that works as one, with the 11 players fully committed, whether we have the ball or not.
