For anyone who wants the fun of an American summer camp without the long-haul flight, there are some right here in the UK.
PGL runs 10 camps across the country where kids from eight years up to 16 can join with thrilling activities from abseiling and canoeing to campfire singalongs - just like they do in America.

Holiday camps are ingrained in American culture, a rite of passage that entertains kids over the summer holidays and gives their parents a break.
In the UK, our answer to this is PGL, which is designed to do exactly that.
There are summer camps all over the country, whether you're heading to Suffolk, Lancashire or Wiltshire.
Kids can stay at the camps between one and seven nights.
The children are split up depending on their age, and are grouped as from eight to 11 years, 11 to 13 and 13 to 16.
For peace of mind, PGL camps have been approved by OFSTED, have world-class safeguarding, expertly trained teams, and 24/7 care.
Now for the fun part, kids can do a range of activities including abseiling, archery, climbing, fencing, laser tag, high ropes and orienteering.
Some activities, like 'Survivor', teach children how to find shelter in the woods and learn basic navigation skills.
During the evening, there's US-inspired entertainment including film nights, silent discos and roasting marshmallows around a campfire.

With the Trailblazer package, which is available on seven-night stays, children get to take on an extra interest or hobby on top of the best of PGL's multi-activity activities.
This can be anything from pony riding lessons to bush craft and baking sessions.
And for parents who want to join in on the fun, families are welcome on certain breaks too.
The family options are available at two locations in the UK, Barton Hall in Devon and Caythorpe Court in Lincolnshire.
During their stay, families get to compete against each other in a series of challenges, like seeing who's fastest flying down the zip wire, or the best at scaling up the climbing wall.
One visitor wrote a review on Trustpilot that described the camp as: "Full on, jam-packed activities ... the children were never bored. Great food too!"
Another added: "The kids had such a great time with activities like the giant swing, zip line and archery. "
Some sites even have trips to the local theme parks as part of the adventure.
Boreatton Park in Shrewsbury has day trips to Alton Towers and Drayton Manor Park.
And Marchants Hill in Hindhead has days out to Thorpe Park and Chessington World of Adventure.
Other holiday camps specialise in water activities, at Liddington and Osmington Bay kids can go canoeing, build rafts and sail across the nearby lakes.
All the packages include accommodation, three meals a day, and a full program of daytime and evening activities, including equipment and instruction from qualified holiday camp leaders.
Currently, there's 40 per cent off the multi-activity camp on stays of selected one, two, three, four and seven nights.
You can now get a one night stay from £87 per night - this discount is valid for bookings made up until July 23, 2025.
Here's another American-style summer camp in the UK that kids will love – with bunkhouses and beach adventures.
Plus, ten campsites in the UK with nearby beaches – and they start from just £15.
I spent a summer at a USA holiday camp
Jenna Stevens spent time at a summer camp in America working as a counsellor - and here's what she thought...
As a Brit brought up on a diet of American movies and TV shows, I've always longed to be part of a US summer camp.
Thankfully, I could. As summer camps often look for international staff to bring their skills across the pond.
My days started at 6:30am - going from snoozing my alarm at home, to getting kids' teeth brushed, boots on and out the door before 7am was quite the change from my routine as a 21 year old back in England.
Each morning we'd gather on the sports field to raise the American flag, a key part of camp culture that we Brits soon had to get used to.
After knocking back blueberry pancakes or French toast, and glugging down as much filter coffee as I could manage, the activities for the day began.
The days were filled with everything from archery to animal care, ziplining to basketball.
My group of girls and I would sit under a tree and make friendship bracelets, as they requested song after song by Taylor Swift on my Walmart speaker.
Our lunches were traditionally American: sloppy joes (bolognese in a burger bun with cheese), hot dogs and chicken tacos.
Afternoons were spent cooling off in the pool followed by chill time in our cabins.
The kids would stay for one or two weeks at a time, but the camp environment made you grow close - so saying goodbye to them was always the hardest part.
We'd end the week with a campfire, roasting marshmallows and sharing our favourite memories - Jenna Stevens

When driving to Bainland Lodge retreats I didn't know paradise awaited me

We spent the weekend at Bainland Lodge Retreats in the Lincolnshire countryside - and it was paradise. Sign up to our daily newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! It's a staycation like no other, and one I'm not sure I'll ever get to experience again - unless I return. As a North East native, I'll admit, I hadn't heard of Bainland. Now, almost a month on from returning from my three-day break, I can't stop thinking about it. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Again, being honest, I didn't know what to expect prior to arrival. I looked at photos online, of course, and they were spectacular. But in a world where photoshop and artificial intelligence exists, I find it hard to pass judgment without seeing something with my own two eyes. So, when driving into the wilderness of the Lincolnshire countryside, I didn't know paradise awaited me. Spectacular? This place is indescribable, but let me try! Bainland caters for all with stunning accommodation Kingfisher Lodge at Bainland | National World Whether you're looking for a family weekend, a romantic getaway or a group stay, Bainland caters to all party sizes, with lodges ranging from cosy shepherd's huts and lakeside cabins to oversized safari tents and spacious lodges with an outdoor swimming pool. And one of the site's biggest USPs is its dog-friendly. Being with my better half, I guess my stay falls under the romantic category and for that, there isn't anywhere more perfect than The Ponds. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Otter, Kingfisher - which I stayed in, Heron, Dragonfly, Newt and Mallard are situated on the bank of a beautiful blue lake with silver birch woodlands as a breathtaking backdrop, where the only noise you hear is that of the birds chirping. Kingfisher reminded me of an American move | National World The Ponds feature a bedroom with a super king-size bed and dual wardrobe space, a luxury bathroom and toilet room as well as a light and airy open kitchen, dining and lounge plan, including a unique and stylish hanging electric fire. I noted all that after I made a beeline for the outside decked area and hot tub. Hovering above the lake with the bifold doors fully extended, it felt like I had entered an American movie as I sat in my wooden chair blissfully listening to the wildlife and watching the ducks swim past. Kingfisher bedroom | National World It is there - in the robes provided - where I spent most of my trip, soaking up the sunshine before glancing at the moon and stars at night. Eight planets in the solar system... actually, make that night because being at Bainland felt like a sphere of its own. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Once it was time to go inside, I retreated to the sofa to take advantage of the Smart TV. And once my eyes started to tire, it was into the most comfiest bed imaginable. Kingfisher living room space | National World Breakfast and dinner with a view like no other With a fully fitted kitchen, including an oven and Le Creuset cookware set that only my partner, i.e., my chef, can truly appreciate, we got to enjoy breakfast and dinner with a view. Now, it'd be lying if I said we cooked all our own meals and didn't try out the Copper Goose food delivery service, I mean, it was hard not to when a Lincolnshire sausage sandwich was calling my name via one click on the app! But what I'm trying to say is that for the whole time you're at Bainland, you don't have to leave your lodge, if you don't want to. Coffee view a view | National World However, with much to do on site, we felt we'd be doing the place a disservice if we didn't try out its other offerings. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Bainland's Wellness & Fitness suite and activities Five-star accommodation accompanied by five-star spa and gym facilities. Bainland's Wellness and Fitness suite is something else to boast about. The wellness area hosts an indoor heated pool & heated loungers. | National World The wellness area hosts an indoor heated pool, a Himalayan salt sauna, a steam room and heated loungers of which we enjoyed in all its glory in a private one-hour session. I left refreshed and my skin feeling the best it has for years. As a guest, one general swim session can be reserved with the option of additional sessions during your visit. If you're part of a large group, I'd recommend private hire at £100 for the hour. Himalayan salt sauna and steam room | National World There are plenty of activities to do on site too. Although trying the Mini Land Rovers course was tempting, I finally accepted I am too old... and instead settled on the woodland walk and tennis. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The Nest - excellent food and service Morning, afternoon or evening, Bainland's on-site bar and restaurant, The Nest, is a wonderful establishment with first-class food and customer service. Start the day with your favourite beverage (mine's an iced latte) on the all-weather terrace and end it inside the beautiful indoor setting with food, drink and live music. The food was so good that we dined out twice! Coffee with a view on The Nest's terrace | National World On Saturday evening, we shared a charcuterie platter for starters before splitting off for the mains with a sirloin steak and cheese and bacon smash burger (me), both of which were cooked to perfection. What's that saying? Ah, that there is always room for dessert... Staying true to that, we shared a sticky toffee pudding. My only regret is that I didn't get one to myself. The butterscotch sauce was so good I could drink it. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Food at The Nest | National World So back we were less than 24 hours later, though this time for Sunday lunch on the terrace. There was no starter this time - it was straight to the main. I ordered the slow-roasted pork belly - yes, it did taste as good as it sounds, while my partner went for the roast sirloin of beef. Take me back to Bainland! So if you're looking for a luxury staycation to rest and unwind, Bainland is the place for you. Everyone needs to escape the day-to-day world every once in a while and Bainland offers a true mental reset. From its peaceful surroundings, its wide range of accommodation that caters for all, to the activities and top-class food and drink, I would come back in a heartbeat. And I don't just say that lightly. For bookings or more information on Bainland Lodge Retreats, visit click here.

New ‘trains of the future' revealed with cinema-style screens and onboard nap pods

Including the top 10 advancements Brits want the most TRACK ON New 'trains of the future' revealed with cinema-style screens and onboard nap pods Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) FANCY whizzing through the countryside with 360-degree views of the landscape through glass-to-ceiling windows? Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 5 Train operator LNER has predicted what the future of travel could look like in 2075 Credit: Mischief PR MHP Group 5 Passengers could expect to see 'nap pods' and onboard cinema-style screens Credit: Mischief PR MHP Group Well, these things could appear on trains in the UK in the future, according to LNER. As part of the Railway 200 celebrations, which celebrate 200 years of modern railways, LNER and applied futurist Tom Cheesewright have predicted what we could see from trains in 2075. According to Cheesewright, in 2075 train carriages will have a focus on maximum comfort, entertainment and wellness. Instead of just transporting passengers from A to B as most trains do now, train travel could be an experience that promotes passenger health and wellbeing. As such, trains could feature floor-to-ceiling windows, with 360-degree views of the landscape. Of 2,000 people asked, 57 per cent expressed how they would like this, commenting that gazing out at the countryside is often their favourite thing to do whilst on a train. And 60 per cent said they need constant entertainment whilst travelling. As a result, carriages could feature augmented reality with surreal scenes and gamification options, in the future as well as cinema-style screens - which 22 per cent said they would like. 'Nap pods' might feature too - which 22 per cent expressed they wanted as well. Speed remains a top priority for travellers, with 66 per cent declaring this is why they opt for train travel. Most glamourous train carriage in the world revealed with disco balls, library and private tearoom Cheesewright predicts that new technologies could help trains to become faster, slashing travel times considerably. This would start by making trains more aerodynamic, with complicated things like quantum computing and AI being used together to test thousands of designs at the same time. New materials could also help, with laboratories creating 'super-stiff' composites that can be made to a specific shape. And 3D technology could be used to print metals for the trains. Cheesewright added that the customer experience of getting to and on the train could improve as well. This could include facial recognition replacing ticket barriers. 5 There could even be facial recognition instead of ticket barriers Credit: Mischief PR MHP Group 5 LNER's 'Train of the Future' will be open for people to actually visit Credit: Mischief PR MHP Group Many travellers who were asked (44 per cent) shared how sitting back and relaxing is one of the main selling points of train travel. As such, 'smart' seats could be introduced in the future - where the seats would adjust to the customers' microenvironment, with temperature options and different seat firmness levels to choose from. The seats could also pre-save customer preferences. And for those who hate to sit still, there could be the option to book a 'treadmill seat' where passengers can get their steps in on long journeys. All of Cheesewright's predictions have been brought to life in a first-of-its-kind train from LNER called the 'Train of the Future'. The futuristic train will be on show at London King's Cross Station for three days between July 30 and August 1. The top 10 future train advancements Brits would most like to see on trains LNER asked 2,000 people what they wanted to see on trains in the future, and here is what they said. Cinema-style onboard entertainment - 36 per cent Wellness carriages - 23 per cent On train nap pods - 22 per cent Pre-programmed smart seats - 22 per cent Pet zones - 21 per cent Self-balancing food trays - 21 per cent Family playrooms - 19 per cent Odourless food - 19 per cent Onboard concierge for destination recommendation - 16 per cent Neurodivergent-friendly areas - 16 per cent Rachel Pope, head of digital experience strategy for LNER, said: "It's a very special year for the railway industry, we're participating in nationwide festivities, including various exhibitions showcasing the impact of the railways on society and celebrating the past, present, and future of rail travel." Tom Cheesewright, applied futurist said: "The train journey of the future will be smooth from start to finish, aided by AI planning, ticketless travel, and floor to ceiling windows. "The train of the future will look like a science-fiction marvel: swooping and organic, powerful and quiet, and with an onboard experience that connects us to the countryside around us, or the digital world, or even a seamless combination of the two." The LNER 'Train of the Future' will be open from 9am to 5pm in London's King's Cross Station from July 30 to August 1. Railway 200 started in January and celebrates 200 years of the modern railway. Across 2025, the celebration will see a number of different events and activities for the public to get involved in. There is also a £5 scenic train journey in the UK right along the coastline – where waves crash against the windows. Plus, 12 of Europe's most beautiful train journeys are in Britain – with Victorian carriages and stargazing.
