Malaysian evacuees' 1,000km escape from conflict-torn Iran

As night gave way to day along
Iran 's uncertain highways, a convoy of
Malaysians pressed eastward from the capital, racing against the spectre of violence to reach the safety of the
Turkmenistan border.
The evacuation of 17 Malaysians from conflict-hit Iran unfolded as a day-long odyssey spanning more than 1,000km (620 miles) as tensions mounted.
Among them was Khairi Omar, Malaysia's ambassador to Iran, who called the operation 'challenging but successful' amid the precarious security situation gripping the region.
'Thanks to the close cooperation of the Turkmenistan government, we were allowed entry and proceeded directly to Ashgabat Airport for a connecting flight,' Khairi said on Sunday following the group's return.

Asean's credibility at stake as Thai-Cambodia border clash rages on

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations stands, above all, for the preservation of peace among its 10 members. Now Asean's fundamental principles of consensus and non-interference in one another's affairs are being put to the test by deadly clashes along a disputed border between Thailand and Cambodia. Thailand's acting leader has not ruled out an escalation into war The challenge to Asean's credibility and implications for regional stability have prompted deepening international concern, with regional neighbour and friend China at the forefront. In an interview with state television, Beijing's UN ambassador Fu Cong called for a de-escalation of the conflict and confirmed Beijing was trying to facilitate communication between the two sides in the hope of stabilising the situation. 'Asean has a long-standing tradition of resolving differences through peaceful means,' he said. Foreign minister Wang Yi said China will continue to play a 'constructive role' in helping to ease regional tensions. Thai and Cambodian forces have clashed along their shared border in a major escalation that included artillery fire, tanks, rockets and Thai air strikes. The conflict has led to at least 33 deaths , mostly civilians. More than 138,000 people are reported to have been evacuated on the Thai side, with 35,000 on the Cambodian side. Thailand and Cambodia have long-standing border disputes, primarily over contested areas near ancient temples, for which Wang blames past Western colonisation. The latest clash follows a landmine explosion on Wednesday that wounded five Thai soldiers. Thailand's acting prime minister Phumtham Wechayachai has warned the conflict could develop into war. Both sides should heed appeals for a ceasefire and diplomatic solution, not only from China but also the UN secretary general, the United States and Anwar Ibrahim, the prime minister of Malaysia, the current Asean chair.

Thailand-Cambodia border clashes erupt with air strikes, civilian casualties

Thai and Cambodian forces were fighting in at least six locations along their disputed border on Thursday, resulting in the death of at least one Thai civilian and injuring soldiers, with Thailand also launching air strikes on its neighbour. Advertisement Both countries traded blame for the first clashes in weeks, which began at the flashpoint Ta Moan Thom temple in a disputed zone near Thailand's eastern frontier with Cambodia As fighting escalated in the remote area through Thursday morning, Thai fighter jets fired on Cambodian military positions, according to a Thai army statement. Six F-16 jets were deployed from Ubon Ratchathani province, hitting two 'Cambodian military targets on the ground', Thai army spokesman Ritcha Suksuwanon said. Cambodia's defence ministry condemned what it called reckless and brutal Thai military aggression, accusing its neighbour of opening fire on its troops and violating an agreement designed to de-escalate tension.
