Living off Social Security? New report says you will run out of cash in weeks — every state
If you're planning to live only on Social Security checks after you retire — you may want to think again. A new report by GOBankingRates shows that in every U.S. state, people who depend only on Social Security run out of money before the month ends. The Social Security Administration has always said these benefits were never meant to be your only source of money after retirement. They are supposed to support you — not fully cover your lifestyle.
Now, the latest July 2025 study from GOBankingRates proves that if you're single and relying only on these monthly checks, you'll be in trouble — no matter where you live in the U.S.

Even in the most affordable states, your Social Security check won't last a full month. But some states are still better than others, as stated in the report by GoBankingRates. Here are the top 10 states where Social Security lasts the longest:
West Virginia – 21.5 days Monthly mortgage: $989
Total monthly living cost: $2,830Mortgage: $1,107Total: $2,910Mortgage: $1,268Total: $2,986Mortgage: $1,226Total: $2,999Mortgage: $1,264Total: $3,069Mortgage: $1,351Total: $3,122Mortgage: $1,294Total: $3,175Mortgage: $1,358Total: $3,185Mortgage: $1,393Total: $3,192Mortgage: $1,416Total: $3,262Even in West Virginia — the most affordable — you'll still fall short by 9-10 days each month if you rely only on Social Security. On the flip side, here are the top 10 most expensive states — where your Social Security check runs out the fastest, as mentioned in the report by GoBankingRates. Mortgage: $5,675Total cost: $8,357Mortgage: $4,698Total: $7,003Mortgage: $3,950Total: $6,277Mortgage: $3,626Total: $5,750

Here's how they compare: Georgia – 15.9 days | $3,829/month
Texas – 16.8 days | $3,628/month
North Carolina – 15.8 days | $3,864/month
Florida – 14.2 days | $4,281/month
Wisconsin – 15.9 days | $3,835/month
No matter where you live — you will fall short. The study proves that Social Security doesn't stretch far enough. Even in cheaper states, you're missing 7 to 10 days of income each month. In expensive states, you might fall short by 15 to 20 days, as per the GoBankingRates reports.
This means you must have extra money saved, or other sources of income like:
Retirement savings (401k, IRA)
Pension
Investments
Part-time work
Help from family
This isn't a surprise. The Social Security Administration has said for years that the program is not enough to fully support a retired person — especially with today's inflation and housing costs.GOBankingRates' study just puts real numbers and days to the warning.
If you're hoping to rely only on your Social Security checks — don't count on it. You'll run out of money in every U.S. state in less than a month. You must plan ahead, save more, and understand the true cost of living in retirement, as per the report by GoBankingRates. This report is a wake-up call for every future retiree — especially if you're single and living on a tight budget.Q1. How long can I live on Social Security in the U.S.?
In every U.S. state, Social Security lasts less than a month for single retirees, according to a 2025 GOBankingRates report.
Q2. Which state is the cheapest to live in on Social Security?
West Virginia is the cheapest, where Social Security lasts about 21.5 days each month for one person.

Sensex ends 572 pts lower, Nifty below 24,700. Here are 5 reasons why the Indian stock market fell
ET Online Sensex and Nifty fell sharply as poor earnings, IT job cuts, and stalled US trade talks sparked investor concerns and triggered foreign capital outflows. Indian benchmark indices ended in the red on Monday as weak quarterly earnings, stalled trade negotiations with the U.S., fresh layoffs in the IT sector, and continued foreign investor outflows weighed heavily on market 30-stock Sensex index fell 572.07 points or 0.7% to close at 80,891.02, while the Nifty had dropped 156.10 points or 0.63% to end at 24,680.90. Both the benchmarks have logged four consecutive weekly and small-cap indices also mirrored the broader decline, falling 0.8% and 1.3%, respectively, underlining the breadth of weakness across market capitalization of all listed companies on the BSE shrank by Rs 4.88 lakh crore to Rs 447.85 lakh crore. Negotiations between India and the United States remained deadlocked, particularly over tariff reductions on agriculture and dairy products, dampening hopes of an interim deal before U.S. President Donald Trump's August 1 deadline. In contrast, the U.S. and European Union struck a framework agreement over the weekend, easing broader trade war concerns and highlighting India's diplomatic lag."Negative news and triggers have pushed the Nifty to a one-month low, and market sentiments continue to be unfavourable. While trade deals with Japan and EU, thought to be difficult initially, have happened, the much expected India-US trade deal is even now hanging fire. This has impacted market sentiments," said Dr. VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist at Geojit Investments. Disappointing corporate earnings continued to weigh on sentiment, with Kotak Mahindra Bank plunging 7.8% to Rs 1,960.1 after reporting a decline in quarterly profit and deterioration in key metrics such as asset quality and margins. The stock was the worst performer on the Nifty 50 and led losses in the banking sector, dragging the Nifty Bank index down 1%.Kotak's quarterly gross non-performing assets rose to 1.48% of total loans from 1.39% a year earlier, while its net interest margin fell to 4.65% from 5.02%. The decline in profitability followed interest rate cuts by the Reserve Bank of India, which narrowed spreads as lending rates fell faster than deposit rates. Earlier this month, Axis Bank had also reported underwhelming results, sparking renewed concerns around asset quality across the financial sector. 'Q1 results... are not yet indicating any major positive surprises. Investors have to be cautious and stock-specific in this weak phase of the market. There is safety in largecaps banks like ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank which have come out with the best results in the segment with prospects of improvement going forward,' said Dr. Vijayakumar. Shares of large-cap IT companies extended their decline after Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) said it would cut around 2% of its global workforce, about 12,000 employees, amid weak demand and structural realignment efforts. The Nifty IT index ended 0.7% lower, deepening losses in what has become 2025's worst-performing sector, down 24% from its peak. TCS shares closed 1.6% lower at Rs 3,085.80 after the company stated, 'The deployment of some associates may no longer be feasible under current market conditions.' TCS clarified that the move was not AI-driven but stemmed from realignment followed suit, with Wipro, Infosys, HCL Tech and Tech Mahindra shedding between 0.2% and 1.6%."The sharp cut in the IT index has been dragging the market down, and there is no respite in this in view of the 2% cut in its global workforce announced by TCS. However, midcap IT names hold promise in view of their strong growth prospects," said Dr. warned of wider repercussions, noting: 'TCS' move to cut 2% of its workforce may lead to execution slippages in the near-term and higher attrition in the longer-run for the firm and reflects a weak demand environment for the sector.'The brokerage added that TCS's recent decisions, including the April wage hike deferral and the June policy restricting non-billable periods, signal a sustained focus on cost containment. 'The ongoing lay-offs will hurt employee morale and could potentially lead to execution slippages. In the longer run, such policies could drive a sharp rise in attrition, similar to what was seen at Cognizant during 2020–22.' Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) remained net sellers, offloading equities worth Rs 1,979 crore on July 25, marking their fifth straight session of withdrawals. In contrast, Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) bought equities worth Rs 2,138 crore. "FII selling of Rs 13,552 crores in the cash market last week has added to the weakness in the market," noted Dr. Vijayakumar. From a technical standpoint, downside pressure remains intact with key support levels coming into view. "Once again, bears ruled the day as the Nifty fell below 24,700 amid rising weakness in the market," said Rupak De, Senior Technical Analyst at LKP Securities, adding that "during the session, the index faced resistance around the 50-EMA and remained below it until the close." The RSI continues to support the bears with its negative crossover, De said, adding that "in the short term, the index may remain under pressure, with a possibility of slipping towards 24,550. On the higher end, resistance is seen at 24,800 and 24,950." (Disclaimer: Recommendations, suggestions, views and opinions given by the experts are their own. Last DA hike of 3% or 4% under 7th CPC in July 2025? Central government employees can get this much increase in dearness allowance
ET Online The July 2025 DA increase is the last dearness allowance hike for central government employees before the conclusion of the 7th Pay Commission in December 2025. Around 1 crore central government employees and pensioners are now eagerly awaiting a major salary boost, as the increase in DA (dearness allowance) and DR (dearness relief), which is declared twice a year — in July and December — is expected to be announced soon. This will also be the final DA and DR hike for around 33 lakh central government employees and 66 lakh pensioners under the 7th Pay Commission, which came into effect from January 2016 and is set to end in December this year. Even though the DA hike typically takes effect from July, it's announced with a lag and is usually credited in the accounts of central government employees and pensioners around October, aligning with the festive season in the country. So, will government employees see a substantial salary bump to celebrate around October? What kind of a DA hike can they look forward to this time? ET Wealth Online breaks it down for you What was the last hike in DA announced by the government under the 7th Pay Commission? In March of this year, the government announced a 2% hike in the dearness allowance, effective from January 2025, to be paid to central government employees and pensioners, raising it to 55% of their basic pay. Prior to this hike, the DA was at 53% of basic pay. DA is a crucial factor in a government employee's salary, as it helps them offset the impact of inflation on their earnings. How much DA hike can employees expect from the July 2025 DA hike announcement? The DA hike is calculated using the Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW), released monthly by the Labour Bureau, which falls under the Ministry of Labour. Every month, the bureau shares these index values that track the relative changes in retail prices for a fixed basket of goods and services that are consumed by industrial workers over a specific time frame. The formula for calculating Dearness Allowance for central government employees under the 7th Pay Commission is:7th CPC DA% = [{12-month average of AICPI-IW (base year 2001) for the last 12 months – 261.42}/261.42x100]According to data available on the Labour Bureau website, these are the CPI-IW index values for the last 12 months, from June 2024 to May 2025. Month CPI-IW Index Value June 2024 141.4 July 2024 142.7 August 2024 142.6 September 2024 143.3 October 2024 144.5 November 2024 144.5 December 2024 143.7 January 2025 143.7 February 2025 143.2 March 2025 142.8 April 2025 143 May 2025 143.5 June 2025 144 Average of AICPI-IW over the last 12 months 143.3 Source: Labour Bureau, Ministry of LabourHowever, we will first have to link the 2016 base values to the 2001 base values by multiplying it by a factor (2.88). This will come to 412.70 (143.3 x 2.88) How does one arrive at this factor? Explains RIA Abhishek Kumar, RIA and founder of Sahaj Money: 'This factor of 2.88 has been arrived at to equate the latest base year (2016) to 2001. Labour Bureau data shows that for August 2020, the value of CPI-IW under old base (2001=100) was 33.8 and CPI-IW under new base (2016=100) was 117.4, so the factor is calculated as 338 ÷ 117.4 or 2.88. Now, inputting everything in the formula, the potential DA hike % under the 7th Pay Commission comes to: 412.70-261.42/261.42 X 100= 0.578This comes to 57.8%, or around 58%. Based on these calculations, the central government may go for a 3% hike in DA and DR from the present 55% to around 58%. This means that if an individual has a base pay of Rs 25,000, their DA will go up from Rs 13,750 at present to approximately Rs 14,500. When can central government employees expect the 8th Pay Commission to be implemented? The government hasn't yet finalized the commission's terms of reference (TOR), nor has it appinted a chairman or other members yet. Many experts believe that it could take another 1.5 to 2 years for the commission to come into effect. However, this commission will be effective starting January 2026. This means that for the intervening period from January 2026 till the commission is actually implemented, central government employees and pensioners will get arrears. According to an Ambit Capital report, if we assume a current basic pay of Rs 50,000, and if the DA is raised to 60% of the basic pay from the present 55% before the conclusion of the 7th Pay Commission, then salaries could go up by around 14% under the upcoming 8th Pay Commission. Even with that, it would still be the lowest income growth central government employees and pensioners have seen over the last 4 pay commissions (including the 7th Pay Commission). Before the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission kicked in back in January 2016, the DA stood at 125% of basic pay. So, for someone earning a basic pay of Rs 7,000 under the 6th Pay Commission, their DA amounted to Rs 8,750, bringing their total pay to Rs 15,750. Plus, they also received Rs 4,550 in here's the catch: once a Pay Commission wraps up, the dearness allowance (DA) drops to zero because the index gets completely re-based. This means that under the 8th Pay Commission, the DA will reset to zero as well. The DA increase in July 2025 will be the last hike for central government employees before the conclusion of the 7th Pay Commission. And even though the recommendations of the 8th Pay Commission will be effective from January 2026, many reports suggest that its implementation is at least 1.5 years away.
